Microsoft announces availability of Windows Phones (Windows Mobile 6.5) beginning October 6th

General

Did you hear that? That’s the sound of Windows Mobile fans around the world breathing a simultaneous sigh of relief upon learning that Windows Mobile 6.5-powered handsets, or “Windows Phones”, will finally become available beginning October 6th. Official word just came down from Redmond and we couldn’t be happier to see 6.5 finally preparing to become a reality. As per the announcement, here is an official list of carriers and manufacturers around the globe that are already on board:

  • In North America: Mobile operators AT&T, Bell Mobility, Sprint, TELUS and Verizon Wireless, and phone manufacturers HP, HTC Corp., LG Electronics, Samsung and Toshiba Corp.
  • In Europe: Mobile operators Orange, Deutsche Telekom AG and Vodafone Group Plc, and phone manufacturers Acer, HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba
  • In Latin America: Mobile operator TIM Brazil, and phone manufacturers HTC, LG Electronics and Samsung
  • In Asia Pacific: Mobile operators NTT DoCoMo Inc., SoftBank Mobile Corp., SK Telecom, Telstra and WILLCOM Inc., and phone manufacturers Acer Inc., HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba

As for which devices we might see launch right out the gate, it’s still a bit of a mystery for the time being. Expect the HTC Mega to become a reality around that time of course, and odds are pretty good that the Samsung Omnia II and maybe even the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 will reach market on or soon after the 6th. Anyone as excited as we are to see WinMo 6.1 replaced?

    The carriers decide what and when devices get upgrades to the OS. So get off Microsoft’s back.

    Damn trolls.

    @Billy

    So AT&T decided it was time for Cupertino to move on to OS 3.0? Really?

    I suppose this is why Apple has decided to break with AT&T and go with Big Red next summer and debut the IPhone 4g on Verizon’s new 4g network. Not… Android is the only true open source OS that said carrier can dictate how it looks and feels to the consumer. Do you really believe that Sprint is dictating to Team Palm how the WebOs should run? Not… Microsoft works with said phone manufacturer and then subsequently markets the phone to said carrier.

  • Billy

    Well- You apparently have no idea how the Wireless business works. Every carrier dictates to the OS/Hardware manufacturer exactly how they want the device designed and operated. Obvously the OS/Hardware manufacturer has a say in the design and marketing. But at the end of the day it doesn’t make much sense to develop an OS and Hardware design if nobdy’s going to buy it?

    On another note, AT&T couldn’t tell Apple to pick up a dinner check right now. AT&T is so far up Apples ass they(Apple)can dictate anything they want. Including an OS upgrade and a snub @ the 3G(S) unveil.

    And as far as Andriod goes. It looks great. but, it has zero real world functionality. It’s the Linux of the Smartphone world.

    I wouldn’t say Android has zero real world functionality. If carrier X is charging $30 per month for their data plan (no matter which device you use) would you not rather have the best browsing experience for your $$$. WebKit browsers such as mobile safari, webos browser and Android browser all are far superior to Pocket IE, Opera and Blackberry Browser. Plus its only 2nd to Apple for a truly decent app store. BB appworld is a joke as well as Palm’s weak attempt and where the hell is MS???? Test them out for yourself, Android has its place.

    Windows mobile doesn’t support more than 65,000 colors hence the reason it looks so ugly. I had Winmo on my last phone and it was good for text and email but nothing else.

    Gee – isn’t that great! I can get my POS Windoze phone to look like an iPhone! What a total nerd and waste of time!

    Bring me Winmo 7 with a Zune HD interface and maybe I’ll leave my Palm Pre. And I can write my own apps as well, I don’t have to pay a small fortune for a .net license.

    About the upgrade in Brazil:
    I´ve contacted HTC, LG, Samsung and TIM Brazil PR’s in Brazil for more information.

    1) HTC’s PR doesn´t have any information about the fact until now. Considering the smartphone HTC’s portfolio in Brazil (with the Cruise ’07, Diamond and Viva s the most recent phones, and no new WM phones to arrive) it’s hard to believe that any movement for upgrade.

    2) LG’s PR doesn´t have any information about either. In the smartphone portifolio you will find the GT810 (Incite variant). No new WM phones to arrive, so GT810 has the best chance to receive the upgrade.

    3) Samsung’s PR doesn’t have any thing to say about the topic (doesn’t means that he doesn’t know something). In the smartphone portifolio, we’ll find Samsung Omnia as the newest WM phone. But, Samsung Omnia II is in the way – it received Anatel’s Certification (understand as a FCC for brazilian market);

    4) TIM Brazil’s PR received the information yesterday, but doesn’t have any details about ROMs and new smartphones.

    Is it true??? Apple’s iPhone will go to Verizon next year? I call BS, but I’m hopeful. That would be awesome, as it would relieve AT&T’s 3G network for my BlackBerry’s.

    Don’t give me false hope now! I really doubt that will happen, but I’m … well, pulling for Verizon I guess. :) Please get the iPhone away from here.

    Thank you so very kindly,

    LOL… I can’t for the life of me figure out why people buy the iPhone.

    Internal battery that requires replacement at the factory, no physical keyboard, lack of office apps, way over priced plans with AT&T.

    The price people pay to be a lemming, for supposed coolness.

    I LOL when seeing the lines of people buying an iPhone, for what was it when it debuted, $500? That plus AT&T’s rip off plans, the phone was costing people $4500. That’s real brilliant.

    What a bunch of suckers.
