AT&T Windows Mobile phones to get free Wi-Fi starting September 14th

Services

The news just keeps on coming today for Windows Mobile enthusiasts. This morning, Microsoft announced that “Windows Phones” — aka handsets powered by Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 OS — would begin to reach market on October 6th. Now, AT&T has jumped in to reveal plans to add Windows Mobile-powered handsets to its free Wi-Fi pool. That’s right folks, starting Friday September 14th, AT&T’s WinMo smartphones will gain free access to each and every AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot. BlackBerrys and iPhones have enjoyed free AT&T Wi-Fi for quite a while now, so it’s nice to finally see Windows Mobile join the fun. There are two requirements of course, the first being an unlimited data plan or other qualifying data option. Secondly, your WinMo handset must, in fact, have Wi-Fi capabilities in order for you to enjoy free Wi-Fi. Right on.

    If you have an unlimited data plan why would you care about WiFi?

    Oh, and to Mr. iphone, why would I want to own an overpriced piece of eye-candy that only lets me install software Apple approves? I love WinMo because it lets me do whatever I want with it. The way a phone should be.

    Big deal…I’ve been running 6.5 and have had free access to wi-fi hot spots for a long time.
    Oh, I don’t have an iPhone…..I want to install WHAT I want on MY phone, not what almighty Apple wants :)

  • StevenGlansburg

    if you have half a brain you can install whatever you want on an iphone as well…

    @Carl… riggght? I don’t get it either.

    - um. If using a ‘free’ hotspot requires you to have a data plan, then it’s not really free, now is it?

    - Isnt the entire point of using wi-fi hotspots is so that you could save a few bucks if you don’t really need Edge/3G?

    - Other than Starbucks, where are other At&t hotspots? I have no clue. I never pay attention… mostly because I’m distracted by all the free Wi-fi hotpsots I can get just about anywhere… I have 2 Panera’s closer than a Starbucks. Public library is down the street. McDonalds and Chipolte near me has free wi-fi… I don’t know, what’s the point again? I kid you not, there’s even a tire repair joint around the corner that has a home-made sign in the window declaring, “Free wi-fi”.

    Whatever. Thanks At&t for helping me kick my coffee addiction and giving me less incentive to walk into a Starbucks.

    @Carl,

    Because wifi is faster and it helps take some strain off of the network. Also, all I had to do was jailbreak my iPhone and I can do what ever I want as well ;)

    And let’s not forget the TP2 is $350 after $100 mail in rebate. Who’s over priced now? Plus, it doesn’t even have 6.5 yet.

    Iphone gets free wi-fi anyways with the data plan? this advertisement makes no sense because starting on Sept. 6th 2009, all smart phones are required to have the $30.00 data plan which would give you wi-fi anyways when you are an AT&T customer

  • iPhone

    If you run winmo, I just simply feel bad for you. Jailbreak an iphone– not that hard.

  • TrollsLiveInMyTown

    @Glansburg… you sure can! But there’s still a minor difference:

    WinMo phones – if you install whatever you want, MS shrugs

    Android – if you install whatever you want, the Linux/’Droid community cheers you on

    Apple iphone – if you install whatever you want, first they try to brick them all with an online/OTA update; then Steve Jobs lies to the American gov’t and pulls some hyperbole out his butt about ‘threats to national security’

    @TrollsLiveInMyTown,

    Here’s the website to help you find wifi in your area:

    cheaper for AT&T to put a wifi point in starbucks for data access than to build cell towers to cover every inch of ground

  • don’tfeelbadforme

    It’s called multi-tasking and why doesn’t the iPhone have it? Running TomTom on your iPhone? Sounds cool until you have to shut it down to take a phone call. (want more examples? I’ve got dozens.)

    Steve Jobs can’t imagine why that’s a problem.

  • AgBand

    @ StevenGlansburg:

    So you still have a quarter to go and you will be able to install anything YOU want on your iPhone?? Good for you.

    And I would not say that you can install whatever you want on an iPhone. Nobody has gotten Google Chrome installed yet ;)

  • turbodolphin

    what about nokia/symbian connecting to att wifi?
    im curious becuz the wlan wiz is sweet but i have no starbucks here to see?

  • msatlas

    Any idea if this’ll work with an AT&T SIM in an unlocked WinMo phone? I guess I’d have to try and find an AT&T hotspot to test.

    @don’tfeelbadforme,
    I can always tap a couple of times and go right back to the navigation while still talking on the phone. I do it with google maps all the time. What good is your multitasking if you can’t use data and talk at the same time? I routinely talk on the phone and use data through whatever application I want at 3g speeds. Trying doing that with your verizon or sprint phone.

    Nice link for the WiFi sites. None in my area, of course.

    So not the BB. Not the iPhone. Is there ever going to be an agreement on any one technology?

    Er, u… will that be a monopoly? (Just to stir the pot)

    Good news for all you Winmo users.

    Sent via Nokia 5800Xpressmusic.

    Any news on AT

    The only reason they need WiFi is because they dont have a 3G network, sot this is the next best thing, God forbid that you have to leave your hot spot and you have not down loaded that free porn! iPhone users are so sad, mass consumers that need their hands help to do anything.

  • NuShrike

    So nice distraction AT&T. Now where’s the FemtoCell service you’ve been talking about? That’ll really tie together your poor signal deployment and this WiFi.
