AT&T/Rogers 3G-compatible Nokia N900? Not so fast…

General

Ahhh, the Nokia N900. You want it. You need it. You’ve got to have it. If you’re on T-Mobile you’re sitting pretty knowing that 1700 MHz is included in the N900′s three WCDMA bands, just waiting to gobble up T-Mobile’s 3G services. If you’re on AT&T in the US or Rogers up north however, the tears may still be streaming. A glimmer of hope found its way to light last week when rumors that a forthcoming 850/1900/2100 MHz WCDMA version were seemingly substantiated. We just spoke to Nokia however, and yeah… Not so much. Nokia’s official statement:

Regarding the Nokia N900, we have announced a tri-band WCDMA version that utilizes the 900/1700/2100 MHz networks. There have been no announcements regarding a version that supports the 850/1900/2100MHz bands.

As it turns out, The Nokia Blog’s tipster completely fabricated the last line of Nokia’s email — you know, the part that said, “An announcement will be forthcoming” — and the whole story is bogus. We suppose AT&T and Rogers subscribers might be able to keep hope alive considering Nokia still hasn’t flat out denied the possibility of a WCDMA 850/1900/2100 MHz version, but if you ask us it’s time to break out the Ben & Jerry’s and drown your sorrows.

So do you think I could expect the same results using att service wih the n900 as you are getting with the fido service? I mean the EGSM 850mgz and 1900mgz frequencies are available for use through att. What do you think?
      Thanks in advance,
      Shawn

Some one told me whom was running the phone in 2g on the fido network in canada that it was running just as well as his apple iphone that he had on 3g. Basicly he said that the speed rates were pretty hard to tell apart, and the loads were fast, also It has wifi and I will be using that alot as well too. Matter of fact I also put in some Q&A with Clear Network in philly to see if there is anyway that in the future that they will be offering their service to regular wifi phones instaed of their special models and they told me that it is something in the works as we speak so lets hope so. That would be awesome with speeds of upto 4g killer. Lets keep prayin. lol…
I will post all my findings as soon as I get it, which will be right around the end of the month. I will definately keep you all posted with all findings, trials and tribulatuions. I mean if worst comes to worst I will re sell to a team mobile guy ya know….LOL!!!
Thanks and have a great holiday all…

      Hi,

I have n900 and fido data plan..have u selected fido gprs in internet connections and dual network mode in phone options?

I went to the Nokia Store in NYC and the salesperson said the n900 doesn’t work with AT&T 3G, only the 2G. It works on TMobile 3G for now. I’m on AT&T and I’m really, really, REALLY bummed out. the salesperson offered the mini N97 but I was not impressed. I want the n900!

I’m also bummed, because I have been looking for a different platform to develop for. I’ve been doing stuff for both Android, and the iPhoneOS. I’m not impressed with Android because it still has a strong beta feel to it, and uses Java which I can’t stand. The iPhoneOS is technically C, but I want something where I can play more of a role in.
I might still purchase one later on, but I left T-Mobile because their 3G coverage is practically non-existent and not sure why Nokia would put their frequency in there.

just coz the frequency on t mobile is 1700 on 3g and this phone frequency for 3g rquest 1700/2100 and AT&T is 1900…

    • yorgo

Nokia didnt make it speacially for T-Mobile. but the thing is most of the countries are using 1700/2100 frequency 3G in north america we still with 1900 just with exception 2 networks T-Mobile’USA’ and Wind mobile ‘CANADA,ONTARIO’ and soon Videotron’CANADA,QUEBEC’

  • steve

So does this mean that N900 will also work (although only at 2G data rates on AT&T in the US? Anyone doing so currently?

Should I just be able to take my AT&T-issued SIM card out of my treo 650, and have the N900 working for voice, sms, and data?

    • yorgo

u shld be able to use it voice sms et edge with no prob since AT&T is 1900

  • Khameinei

All AT&T users please check out my brainstorm it will push for an N900 AT&T 3G solution https://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/view/850-1900_mhz_frequency_support/

    Thanks,
    Kham
