Nokia: An AT&T/Rogers 3G-compatible N900 announcement “will be forthcoming” [UPDATED]

AT&T and Rogers customers may be able to breathe a sigh of relief in the coming months as rumors of an inevitable AT&T/Rogers WCDMA-compatible version of the N900 may have accidentally been confirmed by a Nokia employee. This is 100 percent hearsay for the time being, but the following is reportedly Nokia’s reply to a customer’s request for information about an AT&T 3G-ready N900:

You are correct, we’ve announced the Nokia N900 yesterday. We have not announced where it will be available but have just said that it will be released in select regions.

Regarding the network bands, you are correct – we announced a WCDMA 900/1700/2100 MHz bands. We have not made any announcements regarding an 850/1900/2100 MHz band device. An announcement will be forthcoming.

Hmm. Now, customer service reps at carriers and phone manufacturers alike do have a tendency to get, shall we say, confused. At the same time, ‘Joe’ didn’t really leave much room for interpretation when we wrote, “We have not made any announcements regarding an 850/1900/2100 MHz band device. An announcement will be forthcoming.” So boys and girls, while T-Mobile subscribers are already sitting pretty ahead of an AWS-ready N900 touching down in October, AT&T and Rogers subscribers might not have long to wait before they can join in on the celebration.

    mentions GSM 850 EDGE:

    Operating frequency

    * Quad-band GSM EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
    * WCDMA 900/1700/2100 MHz

    Great: nice interface, multitasking, apparently no appstore limits (but we’ll see), resolution

    Not so great: ~40% heavier, ~50% thicker, no gyroscopes or light sensors, no multitouch, …and expensive? (we’ll see)

    My take: very nice, but quite not good enough.

    If this holds true, then shit, I might finally be walking into an AT&T store to actually buy a phone for once. I have to wonder how much they’ll do to the software and hardware though if it does turn out to be true.

    Nokia please don’t forget Canada! Rogers or Fido 3G network compatible please!!!!! This is a nice real computer phone at last…..with debian linux too…wow!!!! removable battery too…wow!!!! I can carry spare batteries….

    probably all the people carrying BlackBerrys seeing RIM is Canada

    also, with Rogers/Fido using the same bands as AT&T and Telus and Bell swiching to HSPA on the same bands, it means a better chance of compatible phones being made.

    You’re basing that on the videos you’ve seen, in which the user set up his home screen as he wanted. all that clutter isn’t necessary, and is optional

    Actually its more than likely its coming to Canada. I took a look at

    and if you look at the language section, it had Canadian French.

    Nokia commonly provides that lauguage pack and many others in all of its smartphones. No big sign at all.
