Playstation 3 Slim on sale at Best Buy

Retail

We know, we know — if you really wanted one and stay up on your blawgz you’d have purchased one by now, but for everyone else, it seems as if the PS3 Slim is currently available at a bunch of Best Buy locations. One of our tipsters hit us with the above photo and other sites have reported on this as well. Anyone purchase one yet?

I got mine this morning. :) I even got Arkham Asylum with it too!

Has anyone else noticed on the front of the box, right where the two shiny pieces are (front piece: slot, bottom piece: Power/Eject buttons), there is a blue glow around the trim? Look closely on your box and then look at your PS3. I wonder wonder wonder what the hell that’s all about.

One of the editors at Gizmodo already bought one.

For any Canucks who don’t care how big their PS3 is, though, the fat 160GB Uncharted bundles are being sold at Wal-Mart with Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet for $399.99. I imagine there are similar deals in the US. I figure $400 for a big PS3 with 3 games is a better deal than $300 for a slim PS3 with no games, but that’s just my opinion.

No backwards compatibility on any of the models you’ll find in stores right now though, unless you’re lucky enough to stumble across an older MGS4 bundle, or PS3′s even closer to the launch models.

“I dont really care about the hard drive space, for $150 I can slap a 500GB Sata notebook drive right into it”

Which is why Sony’s strategy of putting in bigger and bigger HD space and keeping the price the same confuses me… if price is what drives people away, then telling them you just doubled the amount of HD space for the same price isn’t going to convince very many people.

What’s more unsettling to me is how everyone sees this as a price drop. I don’t know, but last year they had a $400 PS3 and a $300 PS3, right? So what’s difference now other than the new design and an increase in HD space? Sony would do better if they had a $300 system and then a less costly system. I would gladly pick up a PS3 with only 20GB for $200 if they made it. This is not a price drop, there’s no drop, it’s just a new product with a new SKU for $300… comparable to an older product they had for the same amount of money.

I have been through THREE Xbox 360s, but with the SAME hard drive… the 20GB hard drive that’s never run out of space in 3 years and yes I have around 15 purchased Arcade games along with my game saves, a few DLC add-ons, some demos and profile info. I don’t save music or videos (why when you can stream from PC anyway?) and don’t rip games to the HD because most reviews show that it’s pointless to do so. No need to pay for Live movie rentals when I have Netflix… and even then you would delete the demos/rented movies/game videos when you’re done anyway.

Even look at the comments… most people picking up the new 120GB already are PS3 owners. How many people who just got a Slim didn’t have a PS3 before? I’m curious, so please comment.

And I know what the anti-Xbox people say… well if you buy your Xbox in pieces, it will end up costing the same if not more than a PS3. That’s absolutely true… but that’s why it works. Because someone can drop $200 now and play games if they really wanted. You can pick and choose what you really need as you go along rather than take a big hit to your wallet all at once. I can choose to use a 20GB hard drive and not be forced into spending more money on more HD space.

Well, I’m not anti-PS3… I just don’t find any games I really like on it and can’t bring myself to spend $300 on something I won’t really use. I have blu-ray in my laptop, or I can get a Samsung player w/ Netflix streaming for $200 from Best Buy. The value of a PS3 is lost on me.

But I do agree with another commenter… if you were looking to buy a PS3 anyway, then waiting until now was good timing.

I bought a slim and sold my 80GB to someone else for $200. So I shelled out $129 (including tax) to have the slim. I don’t care about ps2 games. Bought this thing for 2 reasons – 1) It’s actually small and light enough now I would consider travelling with it 2) My old unit could power NASA every time I turned it on. With the power savings I will make that money back in less than a year and start saving after that.

My only gripe is the black plastic instead of the piano black. Not sure what they were thinking on that

  • josh

As far as I know the 60gb model and was the only 100% backwards compatible model, and a few of the 80gb models had limited backwards compatibility.

  • Chris

I picked mine up yesterday! Love it!

I don’t think there was a $300 PS3 before now. They are giving you 50% more space, a smaller unit and less power usage for 25% less.

One big comparison for casual gamers or even people who just like BluRay… a good BluRay player will cost about $200. For $100 more you get a gaming console, a media player, a media streamer and an Internet device… that’s not bad in my opinion.
