Omnia II for Verizon coming soon according to Samsung Mobile USA site

General

There was a bit of confusion surrounding one of our scoops from earlier this month regarding a screenshot of a Best Buy inventory sheet. For those who were unclear, yes, the dates listed there are in-stock dates and not launch dates. From what we can gather so far, most (but not all) of the shipments were indeed received, but that is not confirmed. In any event, the most anticipated handset on that list was likely the Samsung Omnia II, and those who are still skeptical will be happy to learn Samsung has indeed confirmed that the handset is coming soon to Verizon. A new dedicated page on the Samsung Mobile USA site was just spied by an eagle-eyed reader and it also confirms that the Omnia II will be a Verizon exclusive, at least initially. There’s a link for those interested to sign up for an email once the handset is announced, but you can be sure you’ll read about it here long before any such email is delivered. Excited, WinMo fans?

Thanks, Pandabarr!

How does the Omnia 2 compare to the Rogue? I’m about to change phones and would like your recommendation comparing the two phones – pros/cons/differences/etc.

    Thanks!

    @ John,
Although they both have the TouchWiz interface (the home screen with the icons on the left), the Omnia II is technically classified as a smartphone, since at its core it runs Windows Mobile 6.1 (maybe 6.5 when it comes out), which has always focused on “business professionals” who like to work on the go. That said, it’s really easy to link up your email, your work calendar, read PDFs, and read/edit/create MS Office documents, spreadsheets, and powerpoints. Plus (since it’s WinMo), you can download a whole bunch of 3rd party apps from all over the internet for pretty much anything you’re looking to do on a phone. Plus it comes with a nice web browser and Wifi, so you can surf the internet without using Verizon’s network, which is great if you don’t have good coverage.
The Rogue is more limited in its capabilities in that it can only read a few kinds of documents (I think just Word documents and maybe PDFs), doesn’t have wifi, and is basically tied to just the apps that come with the phone unless Samsung adds more through TouchWiz. But it’s still a very feature-rich handset, and you can still surf the web on it and it has a physical full qwerty keyboard, which is really great for messaging and the like. The Omnia II’s is only an on-screen keyboard, which does have its drawbacks in usability.
So if you want a phone that does a lot right out of the box without spending too much money, go for the Rogue. If you want a phone that does a lot out of the box and then some afterwards, go for the Omnia II, but it will cost you a much prettier penny in the long run. Hope this helps!

Omnia 2 or Blackberry storm 2? which one is better?

  • Justin

I’m really hesitant to declare which one is better, not just in order to avoid a “My phone is better than your phone because X,Y, and Z!” affair, but because I know so little about the Storm 2. Plus there’s the fact that they’ll offer really different user experiences, just like the 1st iterations of each phone did. I’m a huge Omnia fan, and my dad really loves his Storm. But you can expect the Omnia II to do a lot of really nifty things with that whole cube interface and the Cover Flow-like media scrolling. I’m expecting the Storm 2 to be a lot more straightforward just like the first one; it may not be as flashy, but you know it’ll do exactly what it says it does and look fine doing it, and that’s more than enough for some people. Hopefully these phones will come out sometime BEFORE I DIE OF OLD AGE here in the US, so we can all have some more smartphone love, lol
