5530 XpressMusic pre-orders being taken by Nokia USA

Retail

Let’s face it. Things aren’t going too well for Nokia as of late when it comes to smartphones in the US. The N97 could very well have been released in ’97, the full-touchscreen 5800 XpressMusic is something we’d much rather not touch again and the E72 doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell at pulling the suits away from their ‘Berrys. Most of the blame can be directed toward an unimaginative OS and an utter lack of effective marketing but the easiest way to sum it up is that Nokia simply isn’t serving out what people here in the US are ordering up. Case in point, the 5530 XpressMusic. Sibling to the 5800 XpressMusic, the 5530 XM is pretty much a carbon copy of the 5800 XM save for the lack of 3G and an overall smaller footprint. On pre-order now from Nokia USA, it’ll run you $289.99 (which includes a free mini speaker) — a whole $10 less than the 5800 XM from Amazon. It doesn’t make any sense to us and is likely going to do nothing but turn more Americans away from Nokia, but come on now. It’s new, people. New! We’ll revisit it again once the early adopter tax is shed and we’re looking at an unlocked full touchscreen smartphone in the mid-$200 range, but we highly doubt it would sell well here in the US even at sub-$200 levels. Plain and simple; it was old news before it was even news.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Wow BGR really hate Nokia, don’t you??

Although it is ridiculous that it barely costs $10 less than a 5800XM, especially when it doesn’t have 3G or the cache of having been in “The Dark Knight.”

If Nokia would actually keep working with carriers and get this on AT&T or T-Mobile and subsidize it down to ~$50, I think it’d sell pretty well. But at that full, unlocked price–no way!

Like the E71 and 5800 they’ll sell a million a month in Asia. Tiny pigheaded amerikaaners are meaningless.

Wow.. take it easy BGR. Nokia got nothing against you, so son u should stop hitting them too much.
The deal includes free bluetooth speakers. If that makes more sense( ahhgg it doesn’t work with the Iphone ;- ).
Whatever your problem , you shouldn’t be too sensitive or emotional when reporting.

there are plenty of SMALLER business people in US market that are desperately seeking some way to ditch the lubeless rape that is BES and Exchange. The e71 and e72 are starting to bring some heat. Microsoft is licensing Activesync to everyone under the sun(including nokia) but nokia is trying to come with the freedom that US customers might not even know is out there, no contracts and no microsoft. I wish Nokia well on their attempt to crack OPEN the US smartphone market. Look out for maemo coming out on the high end phones as well(rx-51, 3g and 800×480 screen)

    HAHAHAHA!

I can not believe that someone had the nerve to post this article. It reeks with ignorance and worst of all, arrogance. Apart from the fact that saying the N97 and 5800 are crap phones is beyond brainless and shows the true knowledge of the critic, which is par to ZERO I’d say, since both and especially the N97 is one of the top cell phones worldwide, but the funniest, because I can only laugh at it, part is this: “Nokia simply isn’t serving out what people here in the US are ordering up.” Oh really? And what are they ordering up? The Blackberry Storm? One of the THE worst devices in history? Or wait wait… some other crap WinMo device? Or no wait… some other device like the iPhone maybe where until the last model you couldn’t even send MMS? Maybe, if you sir knew anything about Nokia and how things work in other countries when it comes to cell phones and what they are “ordering up”, you would know that the USA is the last place on earth that can even have an opinion when it comes to the cell phone world. But you know you are the ugly stereotype that gives the USA a bad name, and after reading this article, I guess that there must be some truth to it.

WTF? Nokia phones are not widespread in the US because of GSM/tech questions and other commercial questions related to business partnerships with the carriers. In Europe and Asia the market is wide open, and you don’t need a carrier to get a phone.

FYI I have a 5530 and it’s the best phone I’ve had. I used to have a N95, good phone, but too big for me. I use my phone mainly to make some calls and hear music/the occasional photo. It’s perfect for this target.

Well now (10/28) it has fallen to $185 with coupons on dell…so maybe its time for a review. Matt Miller at Nokia experts is quite impressed by the device.
