Possible new iTunes 9 screenshots depict Facebook social playlist integration, third-party device support

Exclusive

Ready for round 2, ladies and gents? A tipster just dropped a new handful of iTunes 9 screenshots in our inbox and while their authenticity cannot be confirmed, they’re certainly worth mentioning. Earlier this month we scooped a whole bunch of info surrounding the imminent release of iTunes 9 and this new round of screenshots, allegedly of an early iTunes 9 beta, may help support some of the info we exclusively detailed. The first notable feature depicted in the new shots is the Facebook integration. The images show the ability to create a new playlist and then share it on Facebook. The Facebook entry that subsequently appears on the user’s FB wall will include an iTunes link, presumably pointing to the shared playlist found on an iTunes page. Up next… How about some third-party device support? Yeah, very un-Apple but maybe Jobs & Co. have decided to turn over a new leaf. Again, these shots are not confirmed but the wait won’t be much longer — all will be revealed in early September when Apple holds its music event. Hit the jump for the images along with a screenshot of Facebook displaying a shared iTunes playlist.

Thanks, nicuk!

Firstly i do not work for Apple, i recieved this copy of iTunes 9 from a source i cannot and will not name.

The version of iTunes the screenshots regard are from an internal build of beta software used by Apple developers. It is not the final version and therefore some of the featurews I am going to describe could or have changed since I began using this copy.

The version I have installed is running on the upcoming Snow Leopard. I do not know if the version is 32 or 64 bit.

I live in the UK therefore some features may differ just like they currently do in the present version of iTunes with features such as ‘Ringtones’ being avilable to US but not UK customers.

Initially I was unable to use the iTunes store when i began using the version of iTunes some weeks ago. The version number states: 9.0b15 (12).

First if all, when connecting a third party device to my mac it did not open iTunes automatically. Upon opening iTunes it was diaplyed in the devices menu. I was unable to sync certain content such as apps, games and contacts but perhaps more importantly ‘old’ DRM protected songs and some video files.

When inserting a DVD both iTunes and iDVD opened. Upon closing iDVD the DVD I had inserted ‘The Simpsons Movie’ was displayed in the devices section. The main play button at the top was only clickable when a certain clip was selected. The entire contents of the DVD was shown and not just the main movie or individual chapters. This included dvd extras and thise small videos you get at the start of films theat advertise trailers or show the studiops logo who mad ethe film. Using the ‘Preview Selected’ button I was able to preview a selected clip of the DVD before choosing which parts to import by clicking the ‘Import DVD’ button.

Automatically iTunes selected the longest file (the actual) film and so i imported the movie. No options were diaplyed for what type of import I wanted. However the main film did imprt into my libary around 900MB in size. During playback I could voiew and skip chapters as well as select what audio I wanted to hear such as stereo, mono, comintary etc.

At the present time there is no laws in the UK which prevent UK residents to import DVDs for their own use and pleasure. This may be (should Apple keep it) a UK only feature. The DVD i used is a UK copy of ‘The Simpsons Movie’ and therefore differs in content from that of other countires coppies.

I was also able to share songs and playlists to my Facebook profile. Entire playlists were diaplyed as notes in the ‘Notes’ section of Facebook then diaplyed on my ‘Wall’ as something I had recently added. SHaring individual songs simply came up as a link on my ‘Wall’. This sharing feature can be turned off and playlists/songs are only shared when I manually wished them to be.

There were no changes as of yet to the layout or how how I viewed my iPhone apps.

I was able to use the store as normal for a few days but recently I again have been unable to use the store. The playlists and songs i shared to Facebook have also been removed.

I am unlikely to recive another copy of a beta iTunes 9. I beleive the copy I have is several weeks if not months old.

I have experienced many good improvements and features to iTunes 9 but as expected experiences random crashing and errors.

Thanks, thats all I know and can say… so far.

Please, Nicuk … They’re fake and that’s all there is to it.

What you’re saying about Notes and Posted items makes no sense at all and I’m not even mentioning the possibility of a “UK only” feature (the only differences between countries as of now stems from the Stores themselves). Ringtones ARE available but there just aren’t any compatible songs.

This has nothing to do with analyzing screenshots to compare fonts and iTunes layouts, it just has to do with the incredible stupidity and horrible implementation of the features listed there.

Plus: what beta of an upcoming major release of such a popular product as iTunes would broadcast its features on Facebook? The feature would of course be turned off till sept 07!

Faaaaaaaaake! Stop even talking about it!

@Ethan I’ve read @Darsh ‘s post and honestly I’m an iTunes user and personally I don’t give shit about what you have to say. If you want to complain the go to the Windows Media Player site and do it. I used Media Player, it sucks! Oh and I use iTunes all the time on my PC and I have no issues, actually the only time it’s slow is when I’m using MSN as well as iTunes. My PC is 6 years old and I’ve never upgraded it, it has 512MB of RAM and a 2.40 GHz Intel Celeron D processor. It goes really slow when I use it most times, but thats Windows fault! It never goes slow when, like just now, I’m using Ubuntu. Why do you think @Darsh was tired when he posted what we were all thinking?

    @darsh

i totally get what your’e saying; however, i think it might be more effective to just express your thoughts on the topic and be done with it rather than invalidate others’ comments. i won’t go through everything you said line by line, but to talk to one example, i don’t think it was necessary to address michael’s comment as you did.

michael could very well be tired of the fact that social media is a hot topic right now. we don’t know that he hasn’t played with his settings to disable feeds…or that he’s even on facebook at all for that matter. maybe you know that he is in fact on fb and doesn’t know how to play with the settings and needs to be he can opt out of feeds. i don’t know but it doesn’t matter — the guy just said he’s tired of seeing it everywhere. he’s entitled to that opinion (much like you’re entitled to tell him to stop complaining but what does that ultimately accomplish?) so just let him be.

you bring up some valid points in my personal opinion but other commenters might feel otherwise, and that’s their prerogative.

personally, i think facebook is making huge strides in understanding user interest and this may ultimately help better ad-targeting. also, maybe apple may be working on a way to collect data from facebook to recommend artists through the itunes store that a friend listens to that i might not have in my music library? that might be interesting in auto-relaying what my friends like that i may also enjoy.

then again, i don’t have a facebook account so i may have no idea what i’m talking about and never find out!

(feel free to post a rebuttal to my comment if you’d like)
