Sprint 4G "Blazes" into Las Vegas, Portland and Atlanta

As the line between Clearwire and Sprint’s 4G services continues to get more confusing with each passing day, we can at least take solace in knowing that WiMAX is progressing somewhere in the country. Corny and redundant press release titles aside, Sprint announced yesterday that its 4G services are now live and ready to rock in three “new” markets: Las Vegas, NV; Portland, OR and Atlanta, GA. The announcement comes two days later than the leaked WiMAX roadmap indicated earlier this month but we’d say it’s now safe to assume the rest of the list will pan out as it suggests — provided Sprint stays on schedule, of course. In terms of pricing, Sprint’s mobile broadband plan with a 4G cherry on top will run you $69.99 per month for unlimited 4G (includes 5GB of 3G data) and $10 day passes are available.

    WiMax is for mobile? What phone can use 4G? If not for the phone I wouldn’t want to use it, but that’s just me. I don’t have a laptop or a netbook…yet! ;-)

    @seanr “unlimited 4G (includes 5GB of 3G data)” — the unlimited 4G service includes 5GB of 3G data as well, so you have a backup should you travel outside of the limited coverage areas. 4G is “unlimited”.

    HTC MAX is a 4G voice phone, however, I think on Sprints 4G network it will only use data, since they havent set up a voice network on it yet.

    Anyway….

    Has anyone noticed that a 2-YEAR AGREEMENT is required for 4G, but just a few months ago, they were saying there would be no contracts…

    I guess it only matters if you use “CLEAR” service over “SPRINT”. So… bait and switch

    As a sprint customer I have been very happy with my curent speeds and servce. However I live in las vegas and clear is markiting a $49 plan everywhere and it comes with two modems one for your home that gets 6gbs and a usb modem that gets 3-4gb up/down……so I guess my qustion is why would anyone go with sprint?

    @Roger A: I’m not sure I saw any advertisements mentioning no contracts that came from Sprint. (Also, Clear wants you to sign a 2yr as well)

    To anyone else wondering why Sprint over Clear, Clear offers 4G ONLY for the $45/mo, if you want 4G/3G it’s $79.99/mo ($10 more). Compare apples to apples here guys; if/when Sprint launches a 4G only device, I’m sure it too will be cheaper like Clear’s.

    I would be happy to use Clear for home internet service, but not for wireless. LTE is much faster (its been proven) and is right around the corner with markets going live early next year. Besides, where in the world are you gonna roam with WiMax?

    I’d assume that anyways, but what do I know, having read into the issue and everything. Also, WiMAX and LTE are both capable of around the same speeds, but of course VZW/AT&T will charge a premium for it anyways :)
