Sony's PS3 Slim gets official

News

Sony just took the wraps off its new PS3 Slim at Gamescom in Cologne and apart from the fact that it looks more like a Seagate external hard drive than a cutting edge gaming console, we have to say that we’re really digging the looks of the PS3 Slim. Other than a 120GB drive and new frame which takes up 32% less space, the other advantage the PS3 Slim has is that it sucks down 34% less power. Of course, the price is pretty much all anyone who is eyeing a PlayStation cares about and it’s going to run you $299.99. Come the first week of September, it will be possible for most Americans to buy the latest PlayStation without taking out a second (or third or fourth) mortgage.

That PS3 slim looks like cheap junk. My PS3 looks like a high-end peice of art.

I think this thing is fugly. Also, it would have a “library of great games” only if backwards compatibility for the ps2 was included.

sony is a 10 yr product company or so they say so im guessing 10 yrs after the debut of the ps3

not all ps3s have wifi and for whoever said backwards compatibility would come in a firmware update, false. The reason the new ps3s aren’t backwards compatible is because of a lack of the emotion engine, the cpu from the ps2..which, contrary to the beliefs of ppl that play portal all day, is a piece of hardware

by the way, that thing looks like what i imagine could be a dirty diaper belonging to wall-e

Last time I looked the PS3 only had 1 game I am willing to buy and that is inFamous.

I used to want MGS4 but I already played and completed it over my brother’s house so I wouldn’t buy it just to re-play it.

I don’t like ANY 1st person shooters aside from Bioshock so I wouldn’t buy Resistance or Killzone.

That leaves me looking at a $300 system to play 1 game.

No thanks, maybe when the used PS3′s hit the sub $200 mark there will be more games I like.

I’m not a fanboy of a particular console I have all three systems. First the slim down version is not as attractive as the original. I like the glossy finish with a touch of silver to it. Yeah, you can change the drive too. Here’s the breakdown of how I use all 3 systems:
    1. Use PS3 for blue-ray movies with Sony HD TV, love Resistance1 and 2,Drake Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank,Deadspace, Rockband, playing around with the Home Beta recently.
    2. Xbox360- online gaming is the best, CODseries,Halo 123, Bioshock, Gears of War 1&2 and use Netflix streaming during the winter season.
    3. Wii used for Wii sports, Zelda(twilight princess, love the global weather in 3d and the rest my kids play their games with.
Price wise, I agree they should drop the 80 gig model to $250 and the slim version starting at $300.I know Sony has some kind of new motion controller in the works, while the Xbox360 has Project Natal.Don’t know what Nintendo has in the works yet, on the other hand, Nintendo is the most innovative out of all 3.

    Yes….
otherwise all PS3 games would not work

  • Jeff

No 1080i support for all games. No sale.

    What is their problem ???

  • Heidy Ho

Just bought an 80 GB from Walmart today for $299
They also have them on line for same price.

Just saw the unboxing of the PS3 slim on IGN.com and yes if you flip the PS3 slim and exposed the bottom you can upgrade the hard drive. There is no huge power brick either, its a straight plug to the outlet. Still don’t like its design, too plain. I’ll stick with mine for now, its sitting well beneath my TV stand with a lot of room since the Xbox360 is now in my bedroom.

I wonder if the slim PS3 will have the same life span as the older one

  • Jonathan Bruha

I don’t understand how a $100 price difference is equal to taking out additional mortgages? That’s like saying the iPhone costs an arm and a leg, which hasn’t been true since June ’07…

…but I wouldn’t want to say that on BGR!

wow that looks cheap…..i’ll just stick with my bulky 80gb ps3. i’d rather my gaming systems have some bulk to them. at least then i know if (god forbid) i ever dropped it or something, it would survive…..the new ‘slim’ version….not so much.

i came to that conclusion with my old bulky ps2, and my cousin’s slim ps2. funniest thing ever. to make a long story short, ive had mines since it first came out, and nothing went wrong as far as hardware etc. and he had his has for about 2 months and the black panel for the disk eject slot, popped off.

there is no power brick like the xbox.

    it shows the comparasion here:

The whole point of that flat black paint job is that it doesnt scratch or show fingerprints like the old glossy finish. you ppl would complain about anything though. my 80gb is white because instead of complaining i actually spent a few dollars on a vinyl decal set off ebay.
