More Motorola Android rumors afoot: Shules will run Eclair at launch, AT&T will get GSM version; Flash on track for 2010

Rumor

A new wave of rumors surrounding Motorola and two of its first Android-powered devices is making the rounds this afternoon and if even a few tidbits pan out, it could mean big things coming from the down and out manufacturer. The focus is clearly on the Shules, or Sholes depending on who your source is, and the Flash makes a brief appearance as well for good measure. Let’s get to it:

  • The Shules will launch with Eclair — Donut is so H1 2009, and Motorola’s upcoming Android slider will reportedly drop with Eclair on board. It may even be the “flagship” Eclair handset intended to showcase all of the new features Android will have obtained with Eclair’s release.
  • The Shules will be a gaming beast — The handset is optimized for ARMv7 architecture and will be able to gobble up 3D graphics and games like none other. Supposedly.
  • There is a GSM version of the Shules in the works — While Verizon will get the CDMA version of the Motorola Shules this year as an exclusive, there is already a GSM version in the pipeline and it should land on AT&T, or T-Mobile, some time in 2010.
  • The Flash is still on track — One of the many handsets we scooped last year, the Flash, is still said to be making its way to Verizon and it should launch in early 2010. This further supports what we speculated earlier this month.

While absolutely none of this new info is confirmed by any means, a lot of it certainly makes sense. Slap some Blur goodness on top of this Android pie and you might just end up with the first Motorola smartphones in ages that are actually worth getting excited about.

Thanks, D F!

I want calgrrry pics and a shules that looks like the renders.

I really hope Motorola pulls off their Android debut well. It will not only help to boost Motorola’s bottom line, but it will further accelerate Android smartphone innovation by all of the other vendors (HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, et al).

This is a great time to be a consumer!

    This may replace my BB.

Like the design, hope it really is a showcase for Android and will help MOTO be competitive – The more Android at the party, the better! Just ordered my myTouch 3G from T-mo, G1 user here, but likes the size reduction of the mT – so will have 2 droid phones – hope T-mo gets a version of the Shules or something similar/custom via tmo and moto.

Hope they have something with a little better build quality than the Pre has. Motorola has it in them, but they can over do things as well.

P.S. Who should I take at number eight in my Fantasy draft?

The beauty of this is it showing the rapid evolution of Android – Totally digging it and like HearAndNow says it really is good to be a consumer, so I’m gonna give apple the credit for introing the iPhone, it’s made everyone step up their game – (Looks over at Microsoft saying – you’re next up with WinMO 7)

There is also a rumor that this will come in a non keyboard version with some beefed up specs including a 8 mp camera. Guess we will have to wait And see if that’s true.

  • Nathan

so when i buy the shules from verizon, will i need to get a date plan?

  • Nathan

so when i buy the shules for verizon will i have to get the data plan?

  • Sonya

    @Nathan yes you will.

Also I think I’ve figured it out. The Flash is the keyboardless version of the Sholes. If you go back and look at the renders of the Flash you will see they look exactly the same as the Sholes but with no keyboard.

  • rudy

Can anyone explain why moto is working on such a nice looking phone and releasing polished looking turd with the morrison?

It’s essentially the same specs as the g1 just no chin?

  • Gozrilla

Ugly fucking phone, glad its going to VZW.

  • George

Gozrilla, go jump off a cliff.

  • Dan

Think I’ll have to wait for the FLASH – looks much better.

We can’t take this thing to a smartphone fight – we’ll be mocked for the giant red button.

  • toursux

yeah go jump off a cliff!!!

  • George

You go jump off a cliff too toursux. Or should I say MotoMania.

  • Izzyd

To further add grozilla this is not he final look of the device anyway. the pic posted here is way old and does not look like this anymore to begin with.

As to the speculation of the flash it is in fact the Sholes but without the keyboard last I’ve heard. Originally the project was gong to be canned but is now back on for the folks who do not want an actual physical keyboard like the sholes will have when it is released

  • Sonya

    @ Izzyd

I confirmed that already. That is in fact true.

And yes this is not how the device looks. So relax.

  • info

Just to throw curve, are you sure that picture of Flash isn’t actually the keyboard less version of Morrison….

  • toursux

go jump off a bridge george aka applefanboi!

  • Bryan

Agreed, if the Flash is the Shules w/o the slider keyboard, give me the Flash!

  • Sonya

Yeah the Flash is a keyboardless Sholes. I would love to see some more up to date renders. But I can assure you this is not how the phones looks. They are really keeping this phone hush hush.
