Dell to announce its Android-based smartphone this week?

General

A rumor that has been bobbing its head in and out of water a lot lately is the eventual birth of an Android-based smartphone coming down the pipe from Dell. While we still have nothing concrete from the manufacturer itself, it appears as though a Dell phone could be coming very soon — within days, even. A source close to Techcrunch says the phone will either be announced or launched this week in China. The same source states that the handset will feature a full touchscreen form factor and it will lack a physical keypad, lining up perfectly with our render. Android is still the speculated OS, as it has been for months, though there’s no word on what if any modifications Dell has made to the UI. It will be interesting to see how this plays out but let’s just hope the Texas-based company does a better job on its phones than it did in the now-defunct PDA segment.

That looks like shitty, keyboard-less version of a Palm Pre.

Good news, Dell makes good products, this will be a great phone…It will be better than anything HTC can make…

Latest completely unsubstantiated rumor: The Dell “phone” is really just a rebranded Creative Zii Egg device that differs little from the reference device. In fact, it doesn’t even have a “phone”. Move along people, nothing to see here!

If it’s a phone it will probably have the same 528MHz Qualcomm processor with 256MB of RAM specs. It’s like Android phones are following the Netbook spec trend…ugh…

Heard dell was making a smartphone but this thing looks ugly by even dell standards.

i dunno, if you’ve owned a dell pda in the last 5 years or so, then you’d know that they are fast. The iPaq’s are slightly (very slightly) faster (with the same hardware) but the x51v is beautiful and fast with the 624Mhz Intels. I’d even used mine as a phone with Skype and worked swimmingly. I’d like to see then follow that same hardware trend and NOT use the Qualcomms.

I think Dell ripped off an uglier version of the Pre. Or is that a Pre they ripped the keyboard off of?

Just tell me what phone they took that picture with cause I need to scratch it off my want list.

Yeah. That “phone” looks like it got smacked by the ugly stick about 4 or 5 times.

Don’t knock the Axim line. Those were, and really still are, among the most powerful and useful Windows Mobile Devices ever. Way ahead of their time then, even though the stand-alone PDA was dying, but if Dell puts the same level of hardware in today, it should be a very useful device.
