Sprint announces Personal Hotspot PHS300S and MBR-1000 router, both 3G/4G-capable

Sprint announced a pair of wireless routers this morning that will surely grab the attention of subscribers who frequent various WiMAX-covered regions, both present and forthcoming. The Personal Hotspot PHS300S (pictured above, left) and the Cradlepoint MBR-1000 each support 3G (EV-DO Rev. A) and 4G (WiMAX) connectivity and combine to cover consumer and enterprise markets. The PHS300S is a 3G/4G portable hotspot that supports up to 4 simultaneous WiFi connections. Think of the MiFi as Barry Bonds before steroids and the PHS300S as Barry Bonds after steroids. The MBR-1000 on the other hand, is designed for enterprise use and is more of a stationary solution. It too supports 3G and 4G, and it allows up to 32 simultaneous connections. The Personal Hotspot PHS300S goes for $159.99 via telesales, online and in retails stores while the Cradlepoint MBR-1000 costs $249.99 via business channels. Both are available immediately and require a 3G or 4G data plan ranging from $39.99 to $79.99 per month.

  • grrr

    How fast is wimax?

  • Kevin

    WiMax is currently running around 6-15 mgbs in baltimore

  • Andrew

    Moo that’s mighty interesting!

  • op

    how fast will LTE be compared to WIMAX?

  • fresh2death618

    my bro says he has consistant speeds of 10 mbps in portland. cant wait for a wimax webos device or andriod. and it needs to hit ny asap.

  • grrr

    I can’t wait for a speed test. Lte vs wimax

  • George

    nice!!!!!!

  • Unbelievable

    @grr – you might be waiting awhile. LTE doesnt seem that close. plus the amount of spectrum that others have purchased limit the actual throughput. While LTE may be able to produce high speeds the spectrum that is purchased will not really allow it

  • Unbelievable

    Also the MBR 1000 should support 64 connections ( can allocate 64 IP addresses). MBR1000 has load balancing software and can handle 2 4G cards and 1 3G card at the same time

    So, I’m wondering one thing here – I can’t find any mention of a data cap for these new devices. I’m in PDX with Clear – the speeds are up and down (6 MB sometimes, 1.5-2.5 MB most times) and with unlimited data. Anyone got any insight into the plans for these dual screamers?

  • VZW

    Verizon has speeds of LTE from 8-12 mbps

  • brian

    @bonesb
    No data cap on 4g.

    @vzw
    Verizon does not have anything, just a concept

  • NL

    I do it 3G with my phone for free.

  • Don Louie Cantone

    VZW loves pulling numbers out of thin air and passing it off as fact

  • Unbelievable

    Verizon has labs doing something – nothing real world. I am getting 11mbps with my Sprint 4G card down and averaging 2-2.5 up in the REAL WORLD.

    From reading the post it makes it seem as though the PHS has the 3G/4G modem built in (like the MiFi does) but the Sprint news release and discussion forums say you need to plug in a usb 3G/4G modem. You might want to amend your post BGR…

  • Isaac

    Is there an UNLIMITED data plan for less than $100.00 yet?

  • John

    To Isaac, Sprint is running unlimited 4G in some markets
