Final build of Windows Phone shown off

Software

Oh look, it’s Windows Phone — the soon to be released smartphone OS formerly known as Windows Mobile 6.5. The folks over at The Inquirer were given a demonstration of what was called the final build of the OS and they happened to have a video camera on hand to capture things like the Zune-ish UI, Marketplace for Windows Phone, the free My Phone sync service, Microsoft Tag and a whole bunch of other goodies that are sure to get the WinMo freaks out there fired up. One particularly interesting tidbit from the video: Microsoft will not now, nor ever refer to the OS as Windows Mobile 6.5, referring to it only as Windows Phone: “We don’t even refer to the operating system because it’s part of the whole long term strategy of releases coming out.” Yeah, good luck with that.

@pinguino1 you are right on most of things you mentioned, but no matter how you trash the Iphone, Apple is still laughing all the way to the bank sort of speak. All that talk about how those technologies were available a while ago does not matter if they were never successful with the consumers. Do you really think Apple does not have the know how to make copy and paste and multi-tasking? They came up with the first personal computer. Trust me, they know what they are doing. Marketing is just about everything. Look at Microsoft did to Apple with the PC vs. Mac Os. Mac Os is the better OS, but PC is still in the majority. I am no Apple fanboy, I get whatever suits my fancy. I am really more of a Nokia user, but the latest N97 did not appeal to me, so I’ve taken the plunge and try an Iphone3gs. I now know first hand why the Iphone had been successful and doing it with only one US carrier which is sub-par to begin with. To me ,5 huge things: Marketing, design, sensitive touchscreen, simplicity and easy to get apps.Tried the WinMo with an SE Xperia great build/hardware, but WM bogs it down slow multitasking, hard to see icons and difficult to tap(stylus needed)and panels tend to freeze. After a month, I returned it. The Iphone is too easy for me, but I’m having fun with it. We need to stop thinking about how powerful other OS’s are, because that clearly is not a factor in the average user that makes up the majority of consumers. IMHO, cell phone manufacturers need to come out with an OS that is powerful on the inside, but easy and fun on the outside. Maybe Apple took a page out of Nintendo’s DS with the multitouch screen, and thats the fun instead of going through menus and submenus to activate things. It may be fun and functional for the geeks and business people but unfriendly to the average user.

    So it’s laggy showing Flash?

Tell me, how does the iPhone cope wih Flash?

  • Orga

Hey guys, most people don’t like auto-playing videos. Seriously.

If you could avoid it in the future, that’d be groovy.

  • Jonathan

@Mark, currently there is no flash capability on the Iphone. Is it capable? of course, but its up to Apple. They like to keep a tight control on developers and flash has the potential of unwanted advertising and etc. Then it could be because Apple has quicktime too. The only experience with flash on my one WinMo phone(xperia) was laggy and either played or froze the phone. Having said that, I would like to see flash on the Iphone, maybe flashlite. Most people that I know with Iphones are not aware about flash and what it does and are still happy with their Iphones. We have to think in terms of what pleases the average consumer and that approach is what Apple uses, hence the success. The video shown probably is not the final shipping product, so maybe this version of Windows phone will be user friendly. From what I see it looks like they are on the right track.

I just don’t get you people. Why is it every single time a phone comes out rather its all touch screen or keyboard and touch screen you damn apple fan boy need to compare it to your Iphones? I mean come on can any one make a phone and you all not think its geared towards the damn Iphone? Every one is not in the field of being or trying to be better than the Iphone. 1st it’s the G1 than its the storm 1 and 2 than its pre then the touch pro 2 then the mytouch 3g and now this (sorry for any other phone i left out). You all most really feel as if your phone is not that good to go around comparing every phone that comes out to it. To be real from an android user former blackberry user and a former winmo user, winmo is not that bad its a power house to do the grown man programs. All winmo needs is a better looking os and than all you fan boys would be jumping all over that phone. you all are sad and need to stay on your own phone post. If you got nothing nice to say about winmo well then dont post let the grown folks talk about a grown folks O.S.

  • Jonathan

@android man, well said. I agree this is a Win mo post. I’m all for a different Windows Phone OS. I have been around since the failed attempt of the Apple newton, before cell phones even came about. Actually used the Pocket PC for a long time too so there was not a learning curve for me. I do like the way WinMo integrates with Windows, synching your Powerpoints, Excel spreadsheets and Word. will most likely update my laptop to Windows 7 eventually. Lots of luck the you WinMo folks.

I have nothing good to say about the iphone so Im not going to bash it any more. But, in light of new competition I for one welcome it with open arms. Like the poster said, knock Apple and the iphone down a few pegs.. it’s getting ridiculous if you know what I mean.

@ Jonathan This phone is a nice looking phone, I do like the zuneHD like feel and look to it. i want to get a zuneHD but the lack of storage turned me off to it. Now i can still get a nice looking piece of hardware with what im hoping will be a great pierce of software. With windows7 and Window phone OS coming out around the same time im really looking to see how these 2 OS’S will really work with each other. This might be microsofts rise back to the top of the pack if they can some how find a way not to mess this up. Any one knows what company this phone is going to? I have T-mobile sporting a G1 and a blackberry. My blackberry contract is up so I was looking to go touchpro 2 but now i seen this im not sure what to do. Any one williing to give ne their 2 cent?

  • Jonathan

@android man If I were a Windows phone guy, this one looks very promising. I reviewed the video again and its so much better than the 6.1 WinMo I played with on the Xperia, plus HTC compliments Win phones well too. I actually like the design, simple and straight forward. I wished they had this OS when I was first testing the Xperia then I would have kept it. Maybe an HD version is in the works, that would be great. I’m more of a Symbian user, but that doesn’t mean I won’t get swayed towards a Windows phone. My contract won’t be done for another couple of years and I will certainly keep my eye on this new OS.

  • Android Man

@ Jonathan Oh i understand where your coming from after adndroid OS came out I just fell in love with it. While it maybe an unfinish OS it is very promising one. Android 5 years from now will be a monster just like winmo was. I do like to keep 2 phone though one for play and one for work so I tend to go between blackberry and windows phones depending on who im doing business with and what phone they have. I never ever use Symbian before I always hear great things about it but I’m scared to drop the money and not like it. I see the huge share it has on the cell phone market worldwide but, I don’t know many user here in the usa. Whats your point of view of it and how far has it come from when you started using it? How do you thing it will fair with this new window phone os?

  • Rob Schoenfeld

50k app correct but remember 25k is fart and belch apps.

  • Jonathan

Symbian like WinMo is also a powerful system which Nokia phones takes advantage of. But Nokia has not updated the interface much even with the new touch screens that came out.Excellent multitasking, more user friendly than the old WinMo OS. Right now, this new version looks better graphically than the touch Symbian to me. I am waiting for Nokia to get on the same level of interface with the Androids and Palm Pres before I consider going back to Nokia. Anyway, if you really want to another phone now, go with Android or wait for the new Windows OS since you are already comfortable with it. Symbian is good, but it needs revamping.

  • http://gsoto.com gabriel

I wouldn’t compare it to a blackberry…the blackberry OS is archaic compared to that.

  • alex

Chris, you ignorant d*** sucker i really don’t give a f*** if you sold your pathetic soul to apple so, shut up and take it up your ass The Zune HD, Windows 7, and the Windows Phone are going to be great.
