FCC opens investigation into Apple's rejection of Google Voice apps

General

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the FCC has begun investigating Apple’s rejection of Google’s official Google Voice application and the subsequent removal of similar third-party apps from the App Store. You know the story by now — Google submitted the app, it was rejected, third-party GV apps were then pulled, everyone was pissed, somehow heat was deflected on AT&T, AT&T called BS and so on. Well apparently the FCC has decided to step in. The WSJ reports that letters were sent from the FCC to Apple, AT&T and Google seeking information on the matter. Specifically, “the FCC asked why Apple rejected the Google Voice application for the iPhone and removed related applications from its App Store. The letter also seeks information on how AT&T, the exclusive U.S. iPhone carrier, was consulted in the decision, if at all.” The Journal claims to have obtained the letter that was sent to Apple, which you’ll find in its entirety after the jump. We truly hope that — if nothing else — the FCC manages to take Apple down a peg where its ridiculous app approval process is concerned. For the sake of developers’ sanity, if nothing else. Our favorite part of the letter:

What are the standards for considering and approving iPhone applications? What is the approval process for such applications (timing, reasons for rejection, appeal process, etc.)? What is the percentage of applications that are rejected? What are the major reasons for rejecting an application?

Is there anyone out there who wouldn’t love to see Apple’s responses to those questions? Priceless.

Funny thing is google is deeply involved with the government that’s the only reason the fcc is investigating.

It’s clearly AT&T that is influencing Apple’s decision regard apps of this nature as they are protecting their profit from voice plans. No one would pay for the higher minute plans if they could make unlimited VoIP calls.

We pay for an unlimited data plan and no one should be able to dictate how we use that service. Simple greed is the reason for apps like Skype not being allowed to access the 3G network for calls, and ultimately Apple should have done something about this in the beginning.

Apple is clearly being paid a lot of money by AT&T to disallow this functionality.

They need to be consistent. They sell the phones predicated on the consumer believing “theres an app for that.” Secondly, WHAT does Obama have to do with ANY of this. If you want to read something relevant and edifying about Obama, read:

Stop bein so testy everyone…we all know what Apple is doing is wrong in this regard so just be glad the government and trying to help us out. Apple really does like to act like they can do whatever they want, and umm, last i checked they aren’t the only company in the world.

    @ F-obama:

You say Obama won’t be reelected because half of his voters already admitted they made a mistake. How does that work? In 2004 George Bush had a pathetic 33% approval rating yet he got reelected.

I’m sick and tired of you ignorant people saying Obama is a “socialist”, he’s not a socialist, he’s got a plan. If you don’t want to be a part of the plan, then get the hell out. Don’t forget that he has to bring back an economy that’s one repossession away from depression, and he also has to fix our stupid health care system, he’s also got to make sure that North Korea’s crazy ass doesn’t do anything. Oh yeah, and he’s also got to fix that stupid war we should have never been in.

Why don’t you stop listening to Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh, both of those pathetic losers are terrorists just like Bin Laden and Kim Jung Il.

How would a Verizon go about getting rid of google voice? Is a phone company going to start blocking calls from numbers that they don’t want you to connect to or are they going to ask Google really nicely to discontinue their services?

People think apple fanboys are annoying, but an Obama fanboy is on a whole other level. In particular, it’s the people whose only defense when talking about Obama and his policies is to bring up George Bush.

Additionaly, most people just hear what the talking heads say on the right or left… and regurgitate it like gospel. It’s just as annoying to hear someone quote hannity as it is olberman. Bottom line, neither extreme is good for this country.

  • Truman

Ron Paul would have been EXTREMELY GOOD for this country.

So I said to someone recently “all those politicians are idiots.” I wasn’t making any bold statements, just venting really. This gentleman asks me “do you have health care for life? Are all of your transportation costs covered? Are you guaranteed your retirement money?” Of course I answered no. He says “so who’s the idiot?”

Pretty valid point if you ask me. We can all sit around and bellyache about it until we get our free cheese in the mail, or we could actually DO something about it, and affect actual change in OUR government.

The fcc saved me $160 two years ago. YES!!!

    Extremes are lame-O

    Can we say off topic?

@rushdamian – Excellent point about AT&T trying to control everything. My father worked for ma bell, and its amazing how the culture persists. However, I can’t help but think that we also have to pay alot more because of duplicate/redunant equipment. I mean, how else do separate companies operate except for building their own towers, running their own lines, etc..etc.. Competition has been great for innovation, but I’m not sure about the prices.

But, to stay on topic…I do feel sorry for the IPhone folks. They really are getting bent over on their plans and pricing. Those of us with Win Mobile devices have been enjoying free VoIP and other things for quite some time now….sure, they’re not as flashy as an iPhone, but they do the the functional stuff really well….and WinMo users can tell you that having “open” devices is amazingly handy. Ironic that M$ should be the competitive favorite in this group..

This is getting redeculas it’s like a f@&$&ing dictatorship. You can’t have this but you can have that app with limitation. Apple and these criminal phone carries are ripping people off the way they want to it’s time to do something about that

  • john

    @ Bolthead

STFU!! you are such an idiot you must be worried about your position or you feel obligated to make a stupid statement like that to get paid by carrier or other parties, just get lost i’m sure most people won’t like to hear your crap, at least someone is questioning that B.S, whether its is FCC or anybody else

  • tim

they Have to stop stop Apple and AT&T or any other carries to this any more, people are buy thing these with a very high price already and paying a huge bill every month but somehow apple and the wireless carriers are never satisfied with people’s hard earned money they are making billions in profits already why should a simple application that might make people’s life a bit easier to be rejected just because they want you to pay them more and more? plus dismembering the competition, they are just getting way too far with it they try to lock people up completely if they can and they have done most of it already. this has to stop and I think its in everyone’s interest to do something about that and maybe just maybe they can be pulled back to the right direction

  • Frank

    @ joe

    very well said I agree,

  • rederikus

Obama has more sense. He uses a Blackberry.

  • Fanboy

It’s official, Apple/AT&T are the new cripplers in the cell (i)Phone industry!
