Apple and Verizon rumored to be partnering up for Internet tablet

Rumor

Much has been gathered about Apple’s standings in the market after the impressive show it put on yesterday evening. Now, hot on the heels of the Apple’s earnings is a nice little rumor to further fuel the fire: Apple is allegedly going to team up with Verizon to release an Internet tablet that will be subsidized by the carrier. Think of it as a giant iPod touch, potentially including an actual physical keyboard. Having a tablet could be a double-edged sword as well if Apple also decides to compete with the Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s newly announced reader. So what do you guys think — would a device like this be a huge hit for Apple, or a gigantic Newton-style flop? As a side note, let’s not forget that the source of this rumor is The Street, Jim Cramer’s cohorts. You know, Jim Cramer, the guy who at one time encouraged hedge funds to spread blatantly false rumors about Apple in an effort to manipulate its stock (video, 7:58). We’re not saying an Apple/VZW tablet definitely isn’t going to happen… We’re just saying.

Thanks, David!

    @ warhed

dont you mean, everything apple touches costs gold?

  • warhed

    lol… point well taken…

It could be true, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. I would assume that Apple would love to get their greedy hands on the 84 million customers that Verizon has to offer. Think about it… They are locked into one carrier (that has crap service) for god knows how long. Maybe this is their way of “reaching across the aisle”. I am sure that that Apple would like to get out of that contract as much as VZW would like to see them out of it. Could you imagine the law suits? The iPhone is really AT&T’s bread and butter. AT&T without the iPhone is well, Sprint.

Very excited to see how all this plays out.

This would probably go the Apple mini route…i.e. looks attractive, limited specs and very expensive! which is just usual for Apple.

    @ Davie199,
If VZW has “crap service”, who is better? They recently surpassed TMobileUSA for customer service AND connection quality. They aren’t my cup of tea only because of the CDMA designation. Verizon has great service, and decent device choice, and though not perfect, its better than anything you use in America, Dave. JDPowers doesn’t lie.

@immac. Isn’t that what everyone says about the iphone…

  • blah

Maybe it’s just me, but… I don’t want to carry anything larger than can fit in back pocket… If I did, I’d just bring my laptop. iPhone is good enough for 90% of my mobile needs. Having a bigger screen doesn’t really buy me anything.

Although, I wouldn’t mind a foldable bluetooth keyboard(with a little nub cursor) that I could put in my other pocket :)

“I don’t think this will happen till LTE!” Gotta be honest with you…L.T.E. is going up on all existing verizon cell towers in major cities as we speak. (If you know where a existing VZW tower is, look for the addtional birds nest)
Yet, for broadband acess rev A. This would work perfectly fine. Expect L.T.E. in early 2010 if not sooner (i.e. wi-max comes out early). I haven’t seen the prototype devices, nor believe they are done being developed. If the speeds are true to rumor…..Your gonna be downloading data to your device to transfer it faster then your computer. Expect a big year from Verzion in 2010.

    @ted

What good is faster speeds if the carrier will most likely cap the overall plan… guess you’ll just get to the cap faster :)

Ahh, b/c you didn’t see the PC World 3G Smackdown between VZW, Sprint & AT&T…

AT&T’s 3G network had the most abysmal performance…

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/167391/a_day_in_the_life_of_3g.html

Verizon had an average download speed of 951 kbps. Verizon demonstrated good reliability, too; the network was available at a reasonable and uninterrupted speed in 89.8 percent of our tests

Sprint’s 3G network delivered a solid connection in 90.5 percent of our 13-city tests. Sprint’s average download speed of 808 kbps across 13 cities

The AT&T network’s 13-city average download speed in our tests was 812 kbps… Reliability was an issue in our experience of the AT&T system: Our testers were able to make a connection at a reasonable, uninterrupted speed in only 68 percent of their tests.

AT&T was also affected by time of day… this is why EV/DO is a better 3G technology… voice & data are managed on separate RF carriers, therefore data is unaffected by voice traffic busy hour… unlike HSPA…

and if you use a Qualcomm chipset ALL 3G & 2G technologies exist on a single chipset (ala the Blackberry Storm & a myriad of other devices)

Why do you guys keep up this misinformation campaign that making a multimode device is somehow like scaling the Pyrenees? You obviously know nothing about handset development!

  • AaronB

This has got to be false! Apple would never be dumb enough to launch anything in CDMA.

Blah. It depends what your using the computer for. (not advised for gaming or 24 hour streaming of course). All major carriers use a 5g cap at the moment for broadband. Imagine besides being a wi-fi ready device I’m more curious about the Voice over-ip personally.

Blah. That’s funny & for some a possible point. It depends what your using the computer for. (not advised for online gaming or 24 hour streaming of course). All major carriers use a 5g cap at the moment for broadband. Imagine besides being a wi-fi ready device I’m more curious about the Voice over-ip personally.
—of course that parts a rumor.

  • http://ltequestion? ted

sorry. my mac’s connection is repeating itself.

  • apple

Apple couldn’t possibly be that stupid to pair with Verizon, too many charges and why CDMA? Go with AT&T, and beat them into making their network better. On Apple’s side, this tablet needs to have like a 9.7″ screen, no keyboard (because that would make it a notebook), and run hybrid OSX Snow Leopard and iPhone OS minus the phone. It could easily outsell netbooks, just give it an Atom processor, 64GB and 128GB SSD options, and get some cool Multi-Touch action on that huge screen. And imagine the apps you could make for something like that! They could have a MacBook touch section of the App Store. And it should price at like $499 for 64GB, $599 for 128GB to sell well. Come on Apple we want this!!

  • nickie

Acutally, Verizon has the best network…your obviously not up on new technology…duh.

  • http://www.hernandezlawaz.com TechnoBeaver

If this happens, I’m switching to Verizon immediately.

  • apple

I agree that Verizons service is good but AT&T is more global. It would appeal, then to the global market who doesn’t really use CDMA. But AT&T 3G network is definitely slow as crap. it better have Wi-Fi… Verizon is known for taking Wi-Fi out of their smartphones to make people pay for data packages *cough Storm, Tour cough*.

  • Jimmy

The only mistake will be releasing with Verizon. Theyre obviously gonna go with a gsm carrier if theyre smart. At&t has the bandwidth and they already do business. no brainer.

  • David

Looks great! I would buy it only if it was on Verizon. Non of this sub-standard AT&T crappy network……

  • Hutch24

yo if verizon gets the iphone on our network it would benefit apple more than verizon cause at&t service is a joke.. thats why… the iphone is overrated too… The Gl is way better than any phone out there because of the android os system which verizon will be getting soon…. Verizon also will be first 4g network in america so im not surprised that apple wants to go to verizon….

  • JKurubas

umm “hutch24″ is it? yeeeaaah too about ur comment…we’re gonna hafta ask u to get ur facts straight…sprint actually already released 4G so how is verizon the first? yeeeaahhh sorrry buddy u failed
