Apple earnings are in; 5.2mm iPhones, 10.2mm iPods sold in Q3

News

Analysts, investors and just about everyone else even the least bit interested in tech had very high expectations for Apple’s fiscal third quarter 2009, which ended on June 27th. Well folks, the numbers are in and to make a long story short… Apple crushed it. In fact, the company has just reported its best non-holiday quarter in its storied history. Recession? Please. Here are some highlights:

  • 5.2 million iPhones sold (626 percent growth YoY)
  • 10.2 million iPods sold
  • 2.6 million Macs sold
  • $1.23 billion in profits, up from $1.19 in Q308
  • $8.34 billion in sales, up from $7.46 in Q308
  • $1.34 EPS, up from $1.19 in Q308

Yep, crushed. Apple CEO Steve Jobs had this to say: “We’re making our most innovative products ever and our customers are responding. We’re thrilled to have sold over 5.2 million iPhones during the quarter and users have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications from our App Store in its first year.” Fair enough. We’re glad Stevie is back in action but there’s absolutely no question that the rest of crew stayed on course during his absence.

Personally, I thought that one of the more interesting points in the call was when Cook referred to iPod, iPod touch and iPhone as “pocket” products.

To me, this suggests that there is some segmentation/re-classification of their various products planned that is probably timed to the tablet device rollout, something that I blogged about in:

    Check it out, if interested.

    @toursux,

The razr launched over 4 or so years ago? What kinda comparison is this idiot. Plus they have had multiple razrs on different us carriers.

People say that the Iphone is a consumer based phone, I really don’t know about that. I hear more and more corporations replacing their Blackberry’s with Iphones.Friend of mine works for Abbott Labs and he is waiting for his company supplied Iphone.I’ve used Nokia for the last 5 years, now I am liking my new Iphone 3gs. Iphone worldwide in a few years, Nokia better up their game.

To put things in perspective, iPhone 3G was launched in July 2008 and sold 8 million in that quarter. This year, they launched iPhone 3GS in June, and sold 5.2 million for the quarter. AT&T helped a lot by allowing those 3G buyers in July and Aug 2008 to upgrade early. So a lot of the 5.2 million is preponed sales from next Q. Which makes me wonder..how will they do in the next Q? May be China will help..

that’s impressive. but apple could have sold millions more iphones if they were sold unlocked and not tied to at&t. i’m sure nobody is enjoying these profits more than at&t.

  • dmitri

If they really cared about OS market penetration they’d make OS X available for every PC. That’s Microsoft strategy. Apple has always preferred a more focused approach. The results speak for themselves and no amount of pissing into the wind will change that.

“that’s impressive. but apple could have sold millions more iphones if they were sold unlocked and not tied to at&t. i’m sure nobody is enjoying these profits more than at&t.”

While some people will have been tied into a particular carrier, a lot will have changed to at&t if they wanted an iphone so while at&t would have lost out there, its not so sure that apple would have gained a lot of sales.

“People say that the Iphone is a consumer based phone, I really don’t know about that. I hear more and more corporations replacing their Blackberry’s with Iphones.Friend of mine works for Abbott Labs and he is waiting for his company supplied Iphone.”

Just in case you weren’t aware, anecdote is not the singular of data. :-)

why can’t we be happy for them and move on? why blast other companies (“pre-epic fail”, windows).

competition is good! I hope other companies have this much success sometime soon as well.

    @ rattyuk:

I haven’t seen any comments here stating that Apple is failing. In fact, I am seeing comments stating how impressive this is and how well Apple is doing. The only comments that I see that say anything negative about Apple, are how despite the impressive showing, they still aren’t leading when it comes to MS. We all know that, as it is pretty evident. I understand you need to defend Apple, and don’t hold that against you. I enjoy my Apple products just as much, but I also enjoy MS products. I also have the ability to remove my rose-colored glasses and see beyond the logo on the product.

Your assessment that the MS ads aren’t working because 2.6mm purchased Macs is still not accruate. How many Windows machines were sold during the same quarter? How many of those 2.6mm Macs sold were actually to NEW users? How many were simply replacements for older Macs? I am not denying the fact that 2.6mm is VERY impressive. I am simply questioning your logic.

You then go on to state that the students at the Universities that are Mac and iPhone users will be running the Tech departments in 5-10 years. Do you honestly believe that every University has chosen to use nothing but Apple products, or that every student is using Mac and iPhone only? If so, you sir, are more naive than I had imagined.

I believe Apple will gain ground and will do so impressively, but not to the extent that you are trying to lead us to believe.

    @ rizzy:

    well said!

It’s ignorant of me to speak of any other area of the country, but in the NE and Central Ohio area I have no issues with the iPhone (3GS) or at&t’s network. I had Verizon for 5 years previously and I get just as good if not better service in similar areas. Not a fan boy for either company, just what ever works for best for me. Not to mention one of the cities that I frequently work in was just “lit up” with 3G, which leaves me even less to complain about.

Its the same people buying iphone just so that say can support apple.

  • grigorio

if those were RIM earnings the stock would have somehow dropped 15% because they failed to meet estimates by 0.5%…

  • toursux

damn I wish I bought apple stock back in march!!!!
