Verizon and Slacker make sweet music together on your BlackBerry Storm

Software

If you own a BlackBerry and haven’t yet heard of Slacker, you clearly haven’t been paying attention. The spunky Internet radio provider is making headlines again today and VZW-branded Storm owners should take note — Big Red has announced a new deal to get Slacker on your handset whether you like it or not. But why wouldn’t you like it? Slacker streams custom genre or artist-based stations directly to your handset, computer or Slacker portable device and keeps things fresh with a library of over 4 million songs. A free version of the service plays an occasional ad and only allows users to skip up to five songs per hour, while a paid subscription option removes both annoyances and adds a few more features. Over the next few days the app will be pushed out to VZW Storms OTA and unlike prior versions, the app will give users the option to purchase tracks they hear through the V CAST music store. Ahh, it all makes sense now. Congrats to the Slacker folks on a pretty huge coup and congrats to Big Red for adding even more functionality and value to its Storm.

    I personally prefer pandora because it will play a bit more “underground” music within a station. Meaning that I don’t have to go to an underground station just to listen to that particular music. I prefer their playlists for some reason as well. Though slacker will allow you to cache your music on your mem card. Try’em both and decide for your self!

    @Levell,
    For pop music yes. But as ~Phel said pandora has a wider selection of underground or non-mainstream music available. I have tried both and prefer Pandora hands down. Also, the whole music DNA thing is really cool for discovering new artist you may not have heard of otherwise.

    I prefer Slacker for several reasons. Beyond liking their Genre stations, I love the customization features.

    @Phel and @Bdizzah
    If you want more “non-mainstream” music on Slacker, just change the settings. When listening to a station, just click on the “Customize” button and then select the Fine Tune tab. Along with other sliders, you’ll see a Popularity Slider where you can modify the station to play more non-mainstream music (Deeper or Fringe).

    I think you’ll hear as much non-mainstream music as you want.

    As it was stated earlier, I believe Slacker has four times more music than Pandora…you just have to tweak it to your personal tastes.
