The day we thought would never come: Gmail (Google Apps) sheds beta tag

Software

Up until this morning, we would have confidently put big money on Gmail maintaining its beta status for the next hundred years. Seriously… Has a more widely used and reliable service ever held onto its beta tag for so long (that was rhetorical)? To our shock and amazement however, Google has officially removed Gmail from beta status along with Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Talk. Both consumer and enterprise Google Apps categories are now out of beta in fact, and the latter is certainly the motivation for the change. With 1.75 million companies currently utilizing Google Apps, the beta tag seemed a bit ridiculous at this point and Google finally concurred. Are there any exciting new features to report along with this news? Nope, but you know how Google loves to churn out new features and we doubt the absence of “beta” will slow the company down a bit.

Now it’s time Google offered real Push (Exchange) to those who pay for the service!

I highly doubt that almost 2 million *companies* use Gmail.

Yay, now maybe they can put in some R&D and come out with more official Google apps for Android… seriously, how are they the ‘owners’ of Android and only have like 2 or 3 ‘official’ apps for it? (Gmail, G-maps and Sky Map). Where’s a mobile Docs app? How about making that Android browser into a mini-Chrome w/ tabbed browsing? Or heck, even a Gmail and Google Maps WIDGET would be nice at this point. Yes, there are other 3rd party apps that do all these things, but I don’t get how Google themselves have very little in development for Android.

Does that mean its a finished product, and won’t listen to suggestions from user’s for improvements? To me it has many improvments they can do, for instance, when you have google talk as a tool bar on your desktop and your signed in you also could open up email masseges easily, makes it perfectly easy for some1 to peek in your inbox, that’s bad for many who work together with co-workers in one room and I don’t care if they see my chat history, but emails is a bit more private. At least they should give you the option in the settings to seperate the two.

if you’re one of those people who are scared to have the beta tag off, use the gmail labs called “back to beta” and everything will be back to “normal”.
