Rogers drops the price of the HTC Dream and Magic to $99.99

Though they have only been on sale in Canada for one month, Rogers Wireless has just lowered the 3-year contract price of both the HTC Dream and Magic by $50. This means anyone who wants to pick up either device will be able to do so for $99.99, a very good price for such capable and feature-rich smartphones. As for the reasoning behind the quick price drop, we’re hearing it’s twofold: 1) Rogers wants to make it easier for people to pick up smartphones along with the required (and highly profitable) data plans. 2) The carrier is apparently also having a hell of a time convincing Canadians to snag a smartphone that isn’t made by Apple or BlackBerry — the two most sought after and coveted smartphone brands in Canada. Apparently the “Revoution” was anything but.

    Sure, when you are the only single player in Canada that has the network for all the new toys it’s not even BlackBerry vs. iPhone, it’s that Network A that has the iPhone and BB’s are competing with B and C that seem to only be capable of throwing BB’s and some odd WinMo into the mix.

    Had TELUS, or BELL, have the “revolution” with their line-ups the selling of the devices would be much, MUCH more successful. Rogers’ stores are pretty hard to walk into if you’re trying to buy a Dream or Magic you’re going to stop and play with the iPhone for sure too… soo in the end iPhone comes with a lot of more fun toys for the same price.

    Well in America not even a free flip phone is worth a 3 year contract.

    Yeah, if Rogers really wants to sell these, maybe cut the contract down to 2 years like they have everywhere else but Canada. Oh, and if they want to sell data plans, maybe they should start by offering that 6GB/$30 to everyone. I’d sign up for that in a heartbeat, but I’m not willing to get locked into a 3 year contract or buy a phone that I don’t need just to get it. Smarten the fuck up Rogers.

    The biggest problem I have seen is the inability to try one. As one poster mentioned it’s easy to try out an iPhone as you can’t walk into a Rogers store with tripping over one. . The android and Nokia smartphones are sealed away in boxes that they won’t open for you unless you’ve already bought it :( kinda sad really as I imagine they could move more devices if you could actually touch an use them.

    I was having the same problem, I didn’t think I could try the htc magic. I sent an email to a bunch of Rogers wireless stores in my area, and most of them emailed me back and said they could open one and pop a sim card in for me.

    @Lazaro Well since the mytouch 3G is going to be on pre order Wednesday im saying take notes on the pricing, not the 3yr contract. the rumor price is 199.99 with 2yr contact, but nothing is confirmed yet so it would be nice if it were 99.99 on a 2yr price

    I was just about to say the same. The HTC Hero just got FCC approved and I guess we might see it on Rogers very soon (since Rogers is the only GSM network in Canada…sorry Fido, you’re just Rogers’s pet.)

    @Rey it would be nice but I doubt Tmo will do 99 off that bat. I rather pay 199 w/Tmo for 2 years than 99 for 3 years w/ Rogers.

    Besides Tmo got a lot of brownie points from me with their customer loyalty plan :)

    Rogers is trying to spin this as a price drop but that’s a barefaced lie. The actual, no-contract price hasn’t budged, and is still $599. The only change is that Rogers has increased the incentive to lock you into a 3-year contract, just months before Telus enters the GSM/HSPA market with a swack of new phones. Don’t fall for this shiny trinket!

    @midtoad: Definitely. I just popped over to Telus’ website and saw their $45 Smartphone package. Gets you 6GB of data, unlimited texting, and a few other niceties and is an add-on to any voice plan of $20 or more. It’s a little bit more expensive than Rogers 6GB/$30 promo, but it’s available for any smartphone. I’m jumping ship from Rogers as soon as Telus’ HSPA network comes up in Alberta unless Rogers wakes up on pricing. They’ve got about 6 months. Clock’s ticking Robbers!

    to those complaining about not being able to try one. we get the same problem sometimes here in the states. i went to get a pre demoed and the guy acted like i had asked to pick up his daughter for a date. that said a different store had two out on display for everyone to try so go figure. but you’re not alone canada in your frustration on that point. But three year contracts? Damn that sucks!d
