Apple sells over one million iPhones during launch weekend, six million OS 3.0 downloads

Retail

It looks like dogs everywhere are in for some trouble as Apple reveals over one million iPhone 3G S models were sold this past weekend. Yep, that’s a whole lot of high pitched squealing — but apparently the “S” stands for “Sales”. Almost equally as impressive, it looks like Steve Jobs was somehow tracked down for comment:

Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning. With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.

Fair enough, Stevo… Over a million handsets sold and over six million OS 3.0 downloads in one weekend is definitely a solid showing. What’s more is that despite a few issues here and there, users seem overwhelmingly happy with their new handsets. How about you guys — satisfied customers or buyer’s remorse?

PS- Apple, your website is slathered with “3G S” and today’s release repeatedly mentions “3GS”. Work it out.

again, cost and currency have absolutely nothing to do with this topic. We are talking about the NUMBER of units sold. They can all be sold for oompa loompa dollars for all we care. The point is Apple has sold a crapload of units, and the biggest portion OF THE NUMBER OF UNITS SOLD is in the US. That is what this topic is about.

@Resi- like thats an original slogan…come up with something new and we will praise you, otherwise, leave it to your tweeting…

How many of this number ALREADY had an iPhone of some sort? This is a non factor if it’s just exsisting users as it does nothing to grow the market share. Break out all the areas outside of the US and what is THAT number?

I’m thinking 300,000 stateside and of that 50-100,000 were to new subs

Downloaded 3.0, only issue found so far is that my wifi seems to disconnect quicker and more frequently, and while on wifi, the back/battery gets pretty warm. This did not happen previous to the 3.0 download….anybody else feelin me?

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

have you even used a BlackBerry since 2004? Almost every feature you mentioned is already available on the BlackBerry. I can’t speak for the other devices you mentioned, but your seemingly strong pro-Apple points are kind of useless when they’re not accurate.

I upgraded my iPOD touch to 3.0. WiFi now impossible to use, it disconnects every few minutes and rarely offers to reconnect. Also signal strength greatly reduced.

This is my first Apple product so icalled expecting wonderful support. They told me that they are not officially aware of this issue but if enough people complain, then they may look at it. Went thru troibleshooting and first technique is to wipe everything to go back to base state. I hate that automatic troubleshooting procedure – can’t we do some “troubleshooting” first before that? They told me not to use WPA and instead to use WEP stating that WPA is not really recommended. I asked so why is it available? And why would I use WEP and comprimise my home network’s security?

Other than my first experience with Apple not being what I had been led to believe, the update is great. I especially like a firmware update that adds bluetooth. So, obviously the hardware was always there but nobody caught on to this?

Bluettoth works well enough and is definitely desirable.
But look at all the people complaining about this update breaking wiFi and I get the impression that they didn’t test as well as I would expect Apple to have done. Maybe the Palm Pre release forced them to rush this out the door before it was ready.

BTW, when I asked if I could uses the Bluetooth to tether they weren’t able to confirm if that is possible or even in the works. I suspect that ATT wouldn’t allow this cause then I could use my Blackberry (which my company has an unlimited data plan) to turn my iPOD touch into an almost iPhone without ATT making any money. And I could even make calls using Skype.

The iPhone is a great peace of hardware, to think otherwise is delusional. What you must remember though, it’s a computer before a Phone. I do everything I possibly can with my iPhone (which by the way isn’t even activated), such as play games, watch movies, and listen to music etc. What I wasn’t able to do and what took me to VZ, was for example browse the web. I’d wish this phone was on another network so it’s full power could be unleashed. Yes the full web is an awesome feature but what good is that if the network you’re on is suspect. The dropped calls were horrendous. Back before 2.0 the phone would switch from edge to 3G all the time. My calls would drop while this was taking place. Then with the 2.0 software they supposedly fixed that problem, however drop calls continued. I noticed that my phone kept switching from edge, then show an “O”, then 3G. That’s when my phone would stutter and drop the call. 99% of the time I’m in 3G with my VZ phone. I remember shutting off 3G and just running in edge because 3G flat out stunk! 3G, sorry at&t maybe 2G plus, 3G I don’t think so.

Most of the people I know already had the iPhone 2G or 3G, which upgraded to 3G S. What I would like to know is how many people left another carrier for at&t?

Actually v1 wasn’t 3G yet (I don’t think so anyway). My 1st iPhone (aka 2G) was bad, and it was purely edge.

    Apple rules.

Too bad about Jobs. He has created and presided over a Golden Era.

The Haters are only more proof of Apple’s excellence. I wish I could get an iPhone. I wish it with every fiber of my Curve-carrying being! (No complaints about BlackBerry. As Denise Richards once observed: it’s complicated. If blackberry made computers, I’d *really* be in a pickle!)

Just picked up new iPhone here in Land Down Under. What can I say. Awesome. And with free tethering and MMS from the get go. Sweet
