RIM's profits rose to $643mm, shipped 7.8mm devices last quarter

Retail

Let’s face it, folks — RIM is on a tear and its Q1 2010 results are proof positive of this fact. While a tax drop might have helped propel the company’s quarterly profit to a record high of $643 million, the fact remains that things are pretty much going better than ever — especially considering the global recession. 7.8 million devices were shipped and 3.8 million new BlackBerry owners were added, although the latter is down approximately 100,000 from the previous quarter. As for the immediate future, don’t expect RIM to lose momentum any time soon. Devices like the Storm 2 will surely help add to its 28.5 million userbase worldwide — and let us not forget about the highly anticipated Tour 9630 that’s all set for a summer release.

    Michael, are you mad…?

    To clarify for everyone:
    RIM’s 2010 financial year runs from March 1, 2009 to February 28, 2010.
Them reporting their Q1 results right about now makes perfect sense.

Its time for a major software update. Just like the iPhone, all of the Blackberries are pretty much the same minus size, keyboard layout and connections available

All i gotta say about this beside the proof reading or whatever was spelled wrong. Rim is finally flexing there muscle to prove everyone and apple-holics they are still the best at making mobile devices for the masses. Sure its not one phone like apple makes but who really want the same device there grandma have? Really, who?

Where I’m from, “mm” means “millimetres”, not “million.”

7.8mm sold. But note that they only had half as many activations. Goes to show you want a two-for-one sale can do to boost the numbers.

  • crazylegs

@William Robinson – that is the usual case as upgrades make up the difference. It has nothing to do with bogo offers.

  • mangenius

Iphone 3G(S) still no flash or mms? Shame. LOL

  • Esco

alot hate towards apple over here. but wat can u expect from blackberry users. both phones are good n congrats to RIM on their success.

  • gokmengs

RIM’s numbers will only get better from here, people are buying smartphones instead of the Nokia’s or Motorola’s and RIM finally got some style sense and they position their products towards consumers also. Sad for Nokia, great for RIM

  • Laz

Let me add to gokmengs post, people are now begining to expect more from a phone and are not shy to send a little more money for it…

  • Andrew

Market share up to 55% in North America and just a bit over 2% worldwide, not bad. Market share keeps increasing and same with profits/revenues. To all those Apple fans out there, I’m still waiting for the BlackBerry killer. Didn’t happen with the first iPhone. Still nothing with the 3G. Maybe with the 3G S? I mean why not, sporting a cool new compass and faster hardware, it’s about to happen this time around right?
