AT&T to offer early iPhone 3G adopters $199/$299 upgrade pricing for iPhone 3G S

Rumor

It looks like iPhone 3G early adopters will get a special bonus courtesy of Apple and AT&T today. For one reason or another, AT&T caved and those who purchased the iPhone 3G between July 2008 and September 2008 will be able to upgrade to the iPhone 3G S at fully subsidized prices — $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model. All of you who are eligible can now stop with the “its too expensive to upgrade” diatribe tout de suite. There is some criteria that must be met in order to be eligible such as plan minimums, credit rating and so on, so hit the read link for all the deets. If you purchased your 3G after September, well, there’s always refurbs or next year if you don’t want to cough up the cash.

I purchased an iPhone 3G 16GB (Black) last July, hand AT&T $110 every month and I’m still not eligible for a fully subsidized 3GS ’till January 2010.

But look, since the warranty expires next month (which is always when such devices seem to fail), rather than pay Apple $70 for a one-year warranty extension I’ll just buy a new 3GS on Friday for $400.

Accordingly, I sold my 3G online this morning (in less than five minutes) to Nextworth Solutions for $285. That means , come Friday I’ll have a brand new iPhone 3GS with a brand new a brand new longer-lasting battery and warranty, a faster CPU, double the RAM, a compass, a camera with 50% greater resolution, video recording, an integrated compass, etc, etc for about $115. Doesn’t sound like a bad deal to me. Especially considering a warranty extension on the iPhone 3G would have set me back $70 with none of the added performance.

Now that the iPhone supports tethering. Will we be able to share(tether) the internet connection to another phone? like from your phone to buddies phone?

To Clarify, only users that pruchased iphone 3gs last july to sept 08. and have a min monthly recuring service of a $100 or more pre tax that are usually elg to upgrade every 12months can upgrade on the 19th.

Now any users on family plans that are 9.99 add ons plus the $30 data still have to wait till the 18month or normal upgrade date to get the subsidized pricing.

Also any idivudal users on the $69.99 450min iphone plan plus $20 only comes to $89.99 mrc. So you will not be elgible either.

So in all honesty only a very select few will meet this criteria anyway.

    Hope this helps BGR.

Sorry everyone, after fighting with AT&T for about 30 minutes. I am sorry to inform people that in order to qualify for this early upgrade you need to spend at least 99 dollars a month on your phone bill alone to qualify. this is all before those other fees like data, texting, taxes, and AT&T’s surcharges. I asked why they keep hiding behind technicalities like that and when were they going to start treating us like customers.

Why are you such an idiot? why is what iphone customers do effecting your daily life. dont like what people are saying close the webpage do you really not have anytyhing better to do but sit at your desk in your cublice and bitch about how iphone users are baby’s? my advice, go to the gym, go to a park socialize talk to people cause based on your thought pattern in that message, you must be socially retarded…

I checked with AT&T & found they have a lot of additional conditions before they will allow a lower cost upgrade to the 3gs. You have to have an account with no late payments ever. You have to have an account for which you spend at least $99.00 per month, etc. In effect, very few will be allowed an early upgrade at the lower price.

Our statement and AT&T’s press release are both accurate. Those that purchased the iPhone 3G between July and September 2008 will be eligible for the upgrade price, if they meet certain requirements. we linked to the press release for those requirements.

Those that meet the requirements often have plans that last 12 months instead of 24 months and would be eligible for an upgrade between July and Sept 2009. Unfortunately, it is confusing and not too many people will meet those requirements.

Kelly, I’m sorry, but your article is not accurate; you say, “those who purchased the iPhone 3G between July 2008 and September 2008 will be able to upgrade to the iPhone 3G S at fully subsidized prices” and that’s simply not true. SOME people [very few people] who purchased the iPhone 3G between July 2008 and September 2008 will be able to upgrade at fully subsidized prices. Myself and numerous others purchased between July and September 2008 and we are not able to upgrade at fully subsidized prices.

  • Eddie

Agreed (with Kelly) Your original statement of “those who purchased…between July 2008 and September 2008″ is misleading at best. Your next sentence accurately describes “those who are eligible,” but you’ve already inaccurately set the context for eligibility in the previous sentence. You post is not accurate.
