DTV cometh

General

Today is the day our grandparents have been dreading for quite some time now — that is, if they even knew DTV was on its way. Today is Friday, June 12th, and the switch from analog to digital TV is upon us. While those of us with modern sets and digital cable/satellite/etc have nothing to worry about of course, the generation of analog signals and Rabbit Ears may not be prepared. Then again, if you’re like some of us here at BGR, your grandparents have way more intense set ups than you and it makes you feel a tad uncomfortable. Moving along, it’s estimated that around 3 million US households are not prepared for the switch so Oprah, don’t be surprised if your numbers drop off for a short while. As for the rest of us, if your grandfather is threatening to cut you out of the will unless you come fix his box so he can watch the talkies again, the FCC’s DTV website is a good place for you to start.

    1st?

Not sure why I did that, or anyone else does, but I didn’t get any gratification by being first…so I’m not going to do that again.

I wonder how many people are sitting there smacking the side of their TV wondering what’s wrong with it?

Digital is supposed to have awesome picture but the signal can be disrupted by passing cars… this video has more http://www.newsy.com/videos/stepping_into_digital

Here I am- I am one of those unprepared. Why? i dont really watch tv anymore and my DVD player broke awhile ago-watch movies on the computer. Still, it bothers me not to have a signal-if only for the news in an emergency. I just resent how expensive all the new , better crap is- and I dont like the idea of another box just for converting. Uh oh- I fear I may have a case of early onset curmudgeon.

just buy an happage or pinacle usb HD tuner dongle at frys electronics or worst buy you’ll be fine i do it already works greath with windows 7

i work at the local abc and fox affiliate here in ny, people have been calling non stop all day with questions, mostly simple antenna readjustments, but a tooooooon of people around here dont have boxes or anything and act like they have no clue what is happening

Rosa, I’ve been using the converter box for over a year and have NEVER had an issue with interference. pic quality is great, though I will say that the sound blows when using rca cables compared to the coax.

We have seen a rush of last minute customers looking for the dtv converter boxes and uhf/vhf antennas. As I remembered 1 lady this morning asking us why her tv stopped working?

I found this to be halarious

I’m a low-tech guy (no cable or satellite) and wrote a DTV antenna buyer’s guide post if anyone’s interested:

I live in the metro DC area and have spoken with many people who are complaining about not be able to receive local channels 7(WJLA) and 9 (WUSA) since the transition no matter which converter box or antenna they have selected. Both stations give no signal unless you are forunate to have a digital TV set. What gives? We have even had several ‘electronics’ experts in who are equally dumbfounded as to what is happening in this area.
