The reason why AT&T won't support MMS with the iPhone until "late Summer", tethering info!

Exclusive

We were just told the real reason why AT&T won’t be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and you’re going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees we’ve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason it’s not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and we’re going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?

We’ve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&T’s in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, we’re told.

I have no idea how true this is, however if it is true, then tethering will *NOT* be offered when MMS is actually offered. This includes the 3G and 3GS. Anyhow, there is apparently an ‘official’ date of September 25th, 2009 for MMS on the Iphone. That’s actually past ‘late summer’, but whatever. I don’t care at this point. lol… Link below, which actually points to Gizomodo’s link. Supposedly MMS will be offered free, so we’ll see.

Yea we got the same memo today as well. And technically they are into fall now. But it’s to the point where I don’t care either. Just as long as they hold true to it. And from the looks of it, tethering will not be a part of that update. But we have not heard anything yet on it.

The reason that MMS is blocked from AT&T is not that MMS opt out has to be removed from that accounts manually. This can be done with a system wide account sweep that will be complete on September 25th. The real reason that it has been blocked thus far, is the awaiting 3G network upgrade. This will open up enough bandwidth to handle the extreme data usage increase that is sure to happen when millions of iPhones are opened up to MMS capability. If AT&T allowed MMS now, there would be too many customers complaining abount thier internet speeds considerably slowing down due to network congestion. If everyone can wait PATIENTLY until AT&T completes this massive upgrade on the worlds almost biggest 3G network (the cost is astronomical by the way, I wont get into details) they will surely get the best service possible and have no negative experiences.

  • Caoimhin_B

Ha, wait for AT&T to upgrade the 3G network. It’s been around for 6 years plus. And it’s only the biggest network by acquisition. Europe has a much bigger area to cover and had no problems.
AT&T suck royally, and it was a mistake for Apple to go with them.
I’m hoping that when their contract ends I can move to a good service provider and get away from this BS

  • http://att.com AT.T

@Michael at AT&T, you’re right. Why release it early and have every customer complaining when it’s best to wait to release so we get it right the first time. No matter what you do, someone is always going to complain, like the next person I am talking about:

@Cao, you are a moron. Europe chose quantity over quality, just like Verizon did. 3G IS in more areas but the service is horrible. AT&T chose the other route to better the quality of the existing 3G service before expanding on it, which they are doing every day. And how was it a mistake for apple? Have you seen how many users have switched because they want an iPhone? I am a believer thought that come the end of the contract with AT&T, if Apple is smart, they release it to all other carriers who choose to carry it.

  • Kyle

I agree with the pro at&t comments; the only think i would like to see happen is cellular repeaters put in at more obvious areas of congestion where they are needed, such as CSUF campus.

  • JeRrYFaR

    ATT Peepz:

Apparently people across the country are reporting MMS as working on their IPhones, however it’s few and far between, so it makes sense this has to be done manually.

Is there anything consumers can do to get it faster like rebooting or whatnot to get it faster? I know you need the 3.1 upgrade (which I have) in order to use MMS. I’d just like to know if there’s certain markets it’s been pushed out to currently or if it’s a crap shoot?

AT&T MMS for the iPhone will go live on september 25th even though some users are already able to send MMS with their iPhones.

  • Someguy

Thats fucking ridiculous! at&t should’ve been working on the 3G upgrade from the day they signed the deal with Apple for the iPhone. Its a fuckin phone! Of course we’re going to want MMS at some point. How the fuck could those idiots not realize that!? And what the hell!? $70/mo for tethering! Thats bullshit! The majority of tethered data transferred would be no different than what my iPhone already transfers while using Safari! FUCK AT&T!!!

  • http://AT&T.com AT.T

@someguy you are an absolute moron. 3G was just a rumor when the 2G iPhone came out. So don’t bitch of you can’t get your facts straight. Furthermore, it’s not as simple as “turning in MMS”. Servers would crash, towers would fail, and the capacity to hold and pass so much information would have customers complaining either way.

AT&T has released MMS early to allow a more subtle shift so that it is an easier transition come sept 25th. Not to mention, the iTunes server is bound to crash as well.

Laslty, where do you get your information from? Twitter? No one has said anything about $70 a month for tethering, you’re an idiot. If anything it will be anywhere from free (doubt it) to $30 (the more likely solution). If you’re so pissed off switch carriers or quit complaining.

  • jonathan

I already have MMS on my Iphone3gs. I was actually surprised that it was working already. I’ve sent pictures, now I’ll try cut and paste then video.

  • claystation

Right… if yall believe MMS is actually going to be working for everyone on Friday. I got some ocean-front property to sell you in Idaho… real cheap!

  • Paul

Well, here we are again, knee deep in total lies and bs…
It is now 6hrs into the 25th and I still have no MMS.. I don’t even have the updated firmware that makes it possible.
oh well, to hell with Apple and ATT, play your games, I will get an android phone.
sick to freaking death of being lied to while they still collect my bill.
I got 3 of 4 lines due for renewal, not with ATT and for sure not iphone..
    goodday!

You guys got to stop posting before you read. AT&T has published many documents on every single news site saying that by noon PST (3pm EST) Apple will post a new carrier file. To get this carrier file you need to sync your phone with itunes and click on the update button. Once the carrier file is out it will tell you that you need a carrier file update.

If you already have the new carrier file you will start working as they sent it to a select group of people for testing.

If you are running a hacked carrier file we have no idea what will happen. Our best guess is that if your carrier file “fake” version is less then the new version you will work. If not it will not work because yours is more current then the new update. The correct version of the file for 3.1 is carrier file version 3.1. We dont know if any of this will work if you have 3.0. I am excited to test it with a phone I left on 3.0.

    @Paul,

Just because it is the day of, doesn’t mean the software update will be readily available in the early morning. AT&T is releasing the software update, one network at a time so it doesn’t crash (the cell towers or iTunes server). Stop your complaining and wait patiently for the file. Because it is working fine for me and ALL of my friends and the update took literally less than 30 seconds.

  • Paul

Well it’s now late afternoon and still nothing so u self absorbed AT&T prick can shut up yourself and go to hell. Just cause your needs are met don’t mean shit to the rest of us.

  • DR

My MMS is working, but I had to restart IPHONE to get it to come up with photo icon on message app.

  • http://www.midatlanticconsulting.com macjeff

For those of you posting and say its not working it is probably because you did not do it right. It is not automatic that you get MMS. Follow the instructions I posted below. The blog is not fully online yet until Oct 1 so please pardon the incomplete page.

Carrier setting 5.1. Connect to iTunes and download it. You will then see the camera icon next to the text input field. It’s a really simple process.

To all the little cry babies out there that complained about AT&T not being able to produce MMS capabuility prior to September, you need to get your facts straight. First off Apple, not AT&T decided the launch date of MMS to coincide with the release of the 3GS.. Without updating your phone on ITUNES wich is where you get your applets, and software updates you would not have MMS capabuilities on the phone, sure AT&T, did there part and kept there mouth shut about the big cover up, and Apples fake reason as to why MMS was not available, AT&T has been ready for over a year now, for MMS for the Iphones, think about it children, if AT&T can handle data transfers for BLACKBERRY, PDA’s, Smartphone,s etc… They sure in hell could have handled the Iphone.

    • Adam

      Amen to that

  • hannah

I HATE att. I’ve had no service for a month and I thought They canceled me, like i wanted them to, but my messages go to voicemail.
My bill isn’t late. I have no service anyway. It’s a new phone, won’t even charge.
Their service is erratic. I don’t want it!!! I can’t contact them onl8ine and am NOT sitting on hold for ten years. How can I get in touch easily and tell them to bite me?

    • mutherlicka

At&t aint nothing but a load of greedy mothalicker’s. I have two i-phones and a plain sanyo nothing phone. When I asked them to take off the internet portion on my account, cos I couldn’t afford the $70 a month anymore they told me lies and said it couldn’t be done. Well I experimented and exchanged out the sim cards of one of the iphones, with the sim of the Sanyo with no bells and wistles, and guess what….the iphone still gets internet via my wifi connection, so those Phuckers at ATT are getting my cancellation notice this afternoon. I won’t be conned by them any more, and would rather go without than be ripped off.
