A gutted Palm Pre reveals $170 worth of parts

General

Yesterday many people across the country eagerly waited in line to get their hands on the most anticipated handset of the year, the Palm Pre. While the overwhelming majority of people who took a Pre home with them are counting on it to be their reliable companion for the foreseeable future, the people at Rapid Repair were merely interested in taking it back to their offices and ripping it apart. So what did we learn other than the fact that disassembling a Pre is best done by people who really, really know what they’re doing? Pre components are worth about $170 — a massive leap above the iSuppli estimate of $138. In other words, it’s probably best to actually have a unit on hand before estimating its production cost. Just a thought.

    The symbian browser really sucks. And you chris should know that.

    @Christopher Cox:

    You know.. I messed with a WinMo 6.5 handset yesterday, and its REALLY come a long ways. The details of WinMo7 actually are pretty impressive as well, if not a quantum leap in WinMo. Furthermore, unlike ANY other OS (iPhone, Android, Pre, Blackberry) .. they have the WHOLE handset community developing hardware for their platform. The HTC Touch Pro II looks spectacular, even though its not my concept of great.. it is a great phone. I think those that had formerly retired consideration of MS phones would be well advised to reevaluate their position on this burgeoning platform when 6.5 and 7 are fully released, especially with touch-flow from HTC. There’s been a TON of refinement.. and they deserve credit for their new “relevant” position in the mobile market. I applaud their innovation.. and anyone who doesn’t reconsider them is just too lazy to engage their brain.

    …and a touchstone that costs around $5 to make for $69.99…

    oh, and no mention of Pre issues??? oh wait, this is BGR, so we’ll hear about it tomorrow. Go get your phones Pre-me’s!

    @Truman
    Of course I will reconsider them. My dislike of WM is due to my experience of WM 6.1. I do have plans to purchase the unlocked Touch Pro 2 coming out and use a 6.5 cooked ROM. I don’t COMPLETELY dismiss WM … just hate current generations of it.

    Can we have one Pre post that doesn’t get comments about Apple?

    Whether the iphone exists or not, the pre is a great phone. It should be judged on its merits, not whether it sold out or what’s coming from Apple the following week.

  • wallyson

    $170 when u make one and $7 when you make a million.

    @Dio
    Of course people are going to pit it against the iPhone. Palm execs openly compare it to iPhone, compare its features above said phone, and have even openly stated it was better. So what do people expect if Palm and Sprint are openly comparing it to iPhone?

    If I openly tell everyone my football team will kick the butts of my rivals, people will naturally compare my team against theirs.

    That being said … I’m sure Pre is an awesome phone. I am excited to see where WebOS leads, even though I won’t be getting a Pre. I’m sure other great phones based on the OS will come out soon. Palm Eos maybe?

  • Deep

    Actually for palm the price would be lower than 170. the more you produce the cheaper the last units get. So if pre sells like crazy. Palm could make good money from it.
    -i have always wonder though…why didnt palm go with verizon??? wouldnt they be better off?

  • Deep

    the thing is that palm is in no situation to leave things out..

  • your mom

    @ Deep
    If Palm would have gone with Verizon, the phone would have been locked down; they’ll put their Verizon garbage on it and take off all the cool features.

  • Dio

    @ Chris Cox

    Comparisons are expected in the reviews, but it’s like having a stalker every time anything Pre comes up.

    Feature, OS and hardware comparisons are expected and useful. Pure “Apple rulz and this phone will never get close” are useless.

    And this was a post about parts, so unless we’re talking the value of an iphone’s guts, and apple mentions here are off topic.

    And I get the football analogy, but rooting for one cell company over another?

  • Wayne

    They should have call it the “Pray” because that’s what Palm employees must be doing. If not they should be.

    Ok all you fanboys of both shut up now. I own a pre, i bought it saturday morning and i think its an amazing phone. I think its going to open up doors to a lot of open source apps and the ability to multitask on here is amazing. its going to have its bugs for a little while but i think its nothing compared to the bugs the iphone had at its release. the screen is amazing, no dead pixels or run off, call quality is awesome, loud rich sounding speakerphone, and the UI is extreme eye candy. Id say this is the best phone ive ever used and ive used iphone, winmo, pretty much everything except nokia ive tried. nothing can compare to this. now it just needs a flash and video update and we are all set. they keyboards not that bad. takes a little to get used to but its actually quite good once you do.

  • Michael

    I would take the phone back and exchange it as I am not having any of these issue with my device. There is also a software up available if you have not already downloaded it.

  • Don Louie Cantone

    Like joe blow says, all I’m waiting on is a video recording update and it’s set

    You’re right. The Pre rulez vs iPhone rulez debates are pointless. Although, the Pre fanboys seem very volatile. lol

    iPhone has a lot of weaknesses, and that is why I still use my Curve for lots of things also. Pre has a major weakness in that its applications are HTML/CSS/Javascript. I am just excited to see how things play out a few months from now.

  • AM

    Doesnt anyone remember ALL the problems that the Iphone had when it launched?? How quick people are to forget that.
