Sony Ericsson's incredibly sexy W995a available July 6th

Retail

Having long since been given the green light for sale in the US by the FCC, Sony Ericsson announced today that the unlocked W995a Walkman will go on sale July 6th at Sony Style locations across the US. Identical to the W995 Walkman in every way save for the inclusion of a tri-band UMTS/HSPA (850/1800/1900MHz) radio, the W995a is the type of device that we’d like to see SE continue to push out alongside smartphones like the Satio. Here’s why: a 2.6-inch QVGA display, 8.1 megapixel camera with auto focus, image stabilization and face detection, video calling, Wi-Fi, aGPS, FM radio with RDS, Media Go, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support and a 3.5mm headphone jack can all be yours, unlocked, for around $600. Pretty appealing, is it not?

can all be yours, unlocked, for around $600. Pretty appealing, is it not?..you killed my appealing when you said $600 no way am paying 600 for this phone maybe 450 500 top but not 600

Those specs sound crazy. Anyone who has had a highend SE phone can vouch for their quality…thats why it always amazes me that they constantly go the “Experia” route with these hanhelds that would otherwise gather a nice buzz if released on time under a subsidized US carrier.

    I agree with Damiaking.

$600 for an 8 mpx camera-phone? in the middle of 2009?? Ain’t happening.
Bring the price to the $400 mark and we have a device with mass-appeal, otherwise it’ll just be another “meh” in the long line of recent Sony handsets.

Very appealing. For only $600, I think i’ll get two of them in case I drop one in the toilet by accident.

You guys saying the handset is overpriced must be out of their mind. Where did you see an unlocked high end headset for $400 on release date?

  • Cliff

Hell for that price I would rather get the Nokia N97.

  • charles

For 700 I can own a n97 and touch pro2 and u expect me to pay 600 for this. Just cos of the 8megapixel. I ll wait for aLl d phnes 2 come out aino, satio and all d goodies

  • Mike

Last time I’ve checked, the unlocked n97 was $800.

wow you are right. i did not know it was that low on amazone.com, when i looked it up only scammer and really shady looking websites. nice find cliff.

i however still can say that the price of that sony ericson phone unocked at $600 on release date is fair. i remember when my moto q first came out, it was close to $500 and same goes for my nextel flip phone that was around the same price as well.

the sony ericson headset might not be on my list of next must have phone because i use cdma. but if i was on t-mobile or at&t i would probably give it a try as the device does look good with the brushed aluminum and i must admit that i am a hater of the iphone not because it is a bad device but because of all the fanboys getting on my nerves saying that you are a douche if you don’t rock an iphone.

so to conclude my answer (written from my moto q during psych lecture), that sony ericson looks good or at least to me as taste is a matter of opinion. Do not say that the thing is expensive for what it is because that is the average price of an unlocked high end phone upon release.

I’ll pay it! I have a Canon camera, an iPod nano and a cell phone. If I add it all up, it’s more than $600. It’s not meant to be a smart phone. I work 40 hrs a week not 80 because I don’t have a smart phone.

2.6-inch QVGA display, 8.1 megapixel camera with auto focus, image stabilization and face detection, video calling, Wi-Fi, aGPS, FM radio with RDS, Media Go, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support and a 3.5mm headphone jack can all be yours, unlocked, for around $600.

This phone is exactly what I have been looking for. $600 is a fair price and I find it a lot more attractive than the N97. I just don’t like how Nokia has been designing their phones, inside and out. This’ll be my third Sony Ericsson phone and so far I’m loving their products. I’m still carrying a w810i and this is the first reason I’ve seen to upgrade. I’m so nervous that AT&T won’t carry it.

Oh, and, “i must admit that i am a hater of the iphone not because it is a bad device but because of all the fanboys getting on my nerves saying that you are a douche if you don’t rock an iphone.”??????

Are you serious? Get a life.

  • Mike

Yeah, this is what I think, is there a problem with it?

  • Eddie

It just sounds so pathetic and hysterical, Mike. You hate something because of other people who like it. iPhone fanboys? Everytime I hear someone say, “I hate ____ because of their fans” I just burst out laughing. Don’t be afraid to like something just because of something else. Don’t make purchases based on what other people are saying.

  • Mike

You don’t seem to understand what i tried to say. Do not take everything you see too seriously… I never thought that a little humor on a post would make anyone this upset.

  • Olisaemeka Okoli

The phone is something else. Good job sony ericsson.
