New image and details on Sony Ericsson's first GreenHeart phone

Exclusive

There has been a bit of buzz floating around over the past few days regarding the announcement of an environmentally conscious handset Sony Ericsson is preparing to announce. As it turns out, tomorrow’s announcement is just the first in an upcoming line of green handsets from the JV. Beyond a new image of the first handset to fall under Sony Ericsson’s new GreenHeart line seen above, we’ve managed to confirm a few details. Firstly, as the name of the range might suggest, GreenHeart handsets will sport a variety of green features including electronic manuals (no paper manuals), less packaging, a minimum of 50 percent recycled plastics used in handset production and low power chargers. There is still little known about the handset pictured above that will be announced tomorrow, but we do know it features one touch access to common functions such as calendar, Google search, frequently used apps and more.

Interest piqued? We’ve also managed to get our mitts on an embeddable widget that will be home to the webcast of Sony Ericsson’s announcement. The stream will go live at 8:00am Eastern time tomorrow, June 4th. Hit the jump for a preview and come back around tomorrow morning to learn about Sony Ericsson’s new Earth-friendly GreenHeart phone straight from the horse’s mouth.

“it features one touch access to common functions such as calendar, Google search, frequently used apps and more.”

Yeah, real environmentally friendly. I guess using only one touch gestures requires less exertion and thus less breathing, which causes us evil oxygen breathing human beings to produce less carbon dioxide! Either this is actually true, or Sony is just another brand that is now sadly pandering to liberal idiots.

Or they could be naming the whole damned phone environmentally friendly when all they’re really trying to do is save on packaging costs by not printing out a damned manual.

Saw these the other day and they look okay, the keys are really funky though. One’s all white and has a sleek look though, and it packs a 5-megapixel camera. Also, its supposed to be a zero draw charger where it won’t get any energy if the phone isn’t connected.

The green movement is invading cell phones? Crazy. Reminds me of the low carb diet thing like 6 years ago.

This phone looks pretty similar to my old Nokia 6300

DrewDawg hit the nail on the head:

translation: no manual saves Sony money, less packaging saves Sony money, 50% recycled plastic gets Sony tax credits, which saves them money, and low power chargers are cheaper, saving Sony money.

Plus they can release old outdated models and claim them as “green” so clearly that’s ok.

    green my ass

Hmm, it’s not going to be a tremendous cost-savings for them, as they’re looking for it to be cost-neutral. Less packaging and manuals leads to lower shipping costs, but it also has the potential for increased customer service costs. Additionally, the chargers are smart chargers that don’t draw power when not connected to a device, which does cost more than an average charger.

I’d buy one. Reminds me of my old t637, just updated with current features.
