Microsoft Bing gets previewed on video

Software

Now, we’ll preface this by saying that it is absolutely, positively, 100% impossible to draw any real conclusions about a product like a search engine without a fair amount of hands-on time. After viewing this preview video, we can also absolutely, positively, 100% say that the name “Bing” sounds more ridiculous each and every time it is uttered. Seriously, it’s a really bad name — to quote one of our commenters:

Eh, I dunno. Can you imagine someone saying “Gee, I wonder if I can find a picture of a kitten online?” – “Sure you can, why don’t you Bing it?”

Doesn’t quite work…

As trivial as it may seem, Google is such a powerful brand that it’s now as much a verb as it is a noun. Microsoft’s Bing… Will never be a verb. It does however, appear to be a powerful amalgamation of a variety of existing services. Does it have that x-factor that will help catapult it into significance? Maybe not from what we’ve seen in this video preview so far but only time will tell. One thing is certain: an $80 million launch campaign will give Bing a better chance to compete than any comparable search engine has had before it. Hit the read link for the video and let us know what you think.

Thanks, Jason!

almost everyone has a cell phone today

iphone and other smart phones are seeing their prices drop to the point of being “free”. what is the point of buying a device with HD radio when i can pay for a data plan and get the same radio stations on my cell? along with the ability to run applications and depending on carrier i can also stream TV shows.

cell phone plan prices are dropping like land line/broadband prices did 10 years ago. the cash price of a cell bill is still the same today, but it seems every few months more and more calls go into the unlimited minutes category. everyone already has unlimited data plans.

with LTE coming our way this is only going to increase

somebody at Apple realized that the trend is to have one device to do everything

people will still buy MP3 players, but as phones get smarter and data prices go down they will go away in favor of one device and all these proprietary media delivery formats like radio antennas and XM satellite will give way to the internet with the last mile being a cell tower or whatever people will have in their home

some people will buy Zunes for the HD radio feature, but most people won’t care. how many people here have HD radio in their cars?

@alen – You have already made up your mind that Apple is the future of everything. You even said that “somebody at Apple realized that the trend is to have one device to do everything”. Apple doesn’t even market one device. You’re one of those cats that’s on an Apple crusade or something. People need to chill and enjoy innovation instead of taking it so personally.

it’s just fun to see history repeating itself. only thing different is that i can’t think of a business case where a company captured the market starting at the high end of the market. usually you start at the bottom and work your way up while the high end laughs at you until they realize their customers are gone

i wonder who’s idea at RIM it was to release a $199 phone with no 3G in 2009?

Again, data plans still cost money, radio is free, HD radio is free. Smart phones are “almost free” b.c they come with expensive plans (usually around $99 per month). If the prices of those plans drop substantially, then so will the discount the carriers provide on the device. Also, there is no sign of that happening any time in the near future, which is when people will be buying and using their MP3 players. Something bigger and better will always be coming out, but if you never buy anything you will never have anything. Just admit it, radio is and will continue to be a worthwhile feature for may customers in the foreseeable future, its OK, your apple product will not get upset, until OS 3.0 comes out and it becomes self aware ;)

i’ll be on the lookout in the NYC subway then

original ipod in 2002 i’d see someone with it once a week or so.

2006 and 2007 a lot of people had ipods

these days i see a few touches or iphones every day. the Touch/iphone seems to have had much faster acceptance than the ipod

ever since the Zune came out, i know of only one person with one

clearly you have no idea what you are talking about, you mention that msft captured the low-end desktop market because of price point, what are you talking about unix/linux are gnu you need to do some research before you spew off some of the stuff you said… also the wii is the latest technology, once again you are incorrect. it uses lowend parts but was attractive to consumers because of its brand name (mario, zelda, smash bros, mario kart, and new innovations like wii fit, and wii sports) and its great idea of using the motion sensing controllers. please save all the good people on bgr of you’re uneducated commenting… you need to do some research before you make outrageous comments without facts to back them, windows 7 will most likely generate a massive amount of revenue for microsoft and their current advertising has hurt apple tremendously as indicated on both gizmodo and engadget… i guess you can google it, or bing! it in a few days… rofl

haha, i like the name. it seems to work for me. i mean, i could just imagine my friends and i talking:
friend: “i know, we should google our names.”
me: “no way chief, let’s bing it.”
    f: “bing what?”
    m: “your face.”
f: “whatever man. i don’t know what you’re talking about.”
m: “bing is not a bad word.”
    f: “you’re a bad word.”

    and thus the fun bings.
