Rumored PS3 Slim gets outed, maybe

Gaming

While these photos most certainly have not been authenticated at this point, we may be looking at the first images of Sony’s upcoming PS3 Slim. The company still denies the Slim’s existence, but it looks like an assembly worker may have risked life and limb to put the truth in the hands of the people. That truth, unfortunately, is apparently the fact that Sony can’t figure out how to resurrect its market presence so it’s resorting to a snazzy hardware redesign in an attempt to catch more eyes… And wallets. As Kotaku points out however, the logo shown on the console in these images is most definitely not the current PS3 logo. Sure, Sony could have changed it, but beyond the logo the console as a whole looks, well, cheap. If we step back for a moment though, could it be that Sony has listened to the cries demanding a price drop on the PS3? It has been said time and time again that the expense of building a PS3 console simply doesn’t allow for a lower price. Perhaps, just perhaps, Sony has found another way to hit lower price brackets. As barely any information is available at this point, we won’t be expecting any sort of confirmation from E3. Hit the jump for more shots.

I’m ready to get one now but know there’s another price drop around the corner

I read this on Engadget already … yesterday .

Calling shenanigans, Sony’s not about to give up on the PlayStation brand.

As nice as it would be to get a smaller one, I’d have to give up my original PS3, which has the hardware emulation of PS2 games still. Gonna have to pry that bastard out of my cold, dead hands.

the backwards compatibility is one reason why I rushed to get them before they were all gone. I could not have been happier.

    BGR,

While I can appreciate that you do an excellent job of keeping the public informed about the latest tech, there are times when certain considerations should take place that are in the best interest of the consumer.

We just read about Sony’s billion dollar loss. I also understand this did not stem from PS3 or PSP. However, if you are leaking this kind of info before Sony wants it unveiled, don’t you think that maybe it will be hard for them to move their current PS3 inventory, and hence, eating an even bigger loss? Ultimately that hurts the consumer whether it’s the delay of innovation, delay of price decreases, or general health of the business.

I think this is one of those situations where you should have just kept it to yourself.

Could it possibly be a KIRF (knock-off)?

RUDY….BGR didn’t take or leak those photos. They weren’t even the first to publicize the pictures. Once those pics are taken and leaked the harm is done and they will be all over the world in a matter of seconds. Your beef should be with the factory double agent not BGR.

QUIET THE INTERNAL COOLING FANS then I will buy one.

I actually like the new “cheap” look (if these pics are real). I’ve had enough with the whole industry glossy, fingerprint magnet look. This new look in the pictures can be compared to the mat finish that is used in the Silver PSP-3000.

THIS DEVICE MAY BE A SLIMMER DESIGN VERSION, BUT I’M GOING WITH IT ONLY BEING THE TOP PORTION OF THE SYSTEM. I MEAN LOOK AT IT, IT LOOKS LIKE HALF A SYSTEM IN THE PIC.

  • rvzero

The dude with caps lock syndrome is right. It just looks like the top shell for a PS3. Compare this to the top of your current PS3. It’s pretty much the same, minus the shiny bits.

  • Don Louie Cantone

None of the PS3′s out not support PS2 games?

  • jpg

yeah, that would be cool if it were the real deal but i’m not sure what to believe at this point.

    @Don,
nope. They ended the backwards compatability with the older 80gb model (only soft compatible). The ones on shelves right now only play PS3 titles. I have an older 80gb (a gift from an ex, and i told her not to buy it as I would rarly use it) and the BC sucks on it, games run soooooo slow. My roommate has an og 60gig and it plays ps1, ps2 and ps3 games perfectly due to the ps2 hardware on board. PS3 sucks any way! I loved my 360 til the RROD got me, and then M$ lost my business for good.

  • B

    @Bdizzah
    All PS3s play PS3 and PS1 games

It does look very similar to the top of the current shell. One thing that raises an alarm for me to is the supposed box picture. If it really was a brand new, slimer PS3…don’t you think they would show that off instead of having an odd overhead shot where you can’t tell that it is any thinner?

  • gman

ha ha. fresh out of roswell.
like the white gloves, nice touch. i always use a pair of them, even when making a cup of tea…

  • Ivan

Eeewwwwwwww this slim PS3 looks really ugly in comparison to the original one!

  • Rudy

    @ Jason Bourne -
The factory worker didn’t upload the picture on the BGR website, BGR posted it.

    ‘nough said.

  • brujogarza

does anyone here think, that this looks like the psp battery? or some sort of battery? ok maybe im a little lost in the world of design? i hope that if they do come out with a slim version, that it will also include a built in star trek and star wars lingo decipher? that would be kind of neat?

  • celz

@ rudy the amount of people that would wait to buy a ps3 because of bgr is so small its irrelevant.. sony is much more worried about fixing its flawed marketing plan than some tech blog.. and actually sony would rather tech savy customers wait and buy the first release of a new ps3 because they would be marked up higher anyway..
