Sprint to release MiFi 2200 mobile hotspot in June

Accessories

It looks like Verizon Wireless wasn’t the only company that took a liking to the sleek design of Novatell’s MiFi 2200 mobile hotspot. Beginning the first week of June, Sprint customers will also be able to pick up the snazzy little device online and in stores. If this is the first time you’re seeing the MiFi 2200, it’s essentially a personal Wi-Fi access point that uses Sprint’s data network for connectivity. Any Wi-Fi enabled device can connect to it just as with any other Wi-Fi access point, giving users the freedom to roam and retain connectivity across several devices. Security is covered as well, as the unit makes use of WPA2-PSK, WEP and an SPI Firewall. The MiFi 2200 from Sprint will run $99 with a 2-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate and will require a data plan of $59.99 per month or a Simply Everything plan of $149.99 per month (both plans carry a 5GB data cap and will cost 5¢ per megabyte for overages). Hmm.

Here come the overages!! How easy is it to make it to 5gb…. VERY! and at 5 cents a meg 50 bucks a gig…. Spendy! Especially when someone does not properly set up security and the pimple face kid next door is using your mobile hot spot to watch movies or play warcraft!

This must have something to do with the PRE release… OMG

Wow, I never did here of this…this is something I actually would very much entertain…

TMo and ATT, where ya at?

This was on the leaked roadmap, now all they need to do is get the Pre and Dash (2nd Generation Instinct) out by next month and all the 1st half targets are met

Guys is itjust me or as more smart phones become ever increasingly popular unlimited data is going away? I foresee data caps throughout the carriers! At&t will start with 1GB for every iphone!!! Which will include five minutes of facebook, 2 on myspace, and half a Mariah Carey video, “Hero”!

    The end is near!

BGR, you forgot to mention that Sprints version supports full GPS capabilities, allowing users to take advantage of select location and mapping applications. As usual Verizon cripples their version.

I am glad my grandfathered plan does not have a 5GB cap.

That $150 a month Sprint Plan includin the Unlimited Phone and plan for this is great. Unfortunately i only use the Cell Phone part of that.

Considering Boingo Access, Free Wifi in general and Airtran having inflite wifi i really dont have a use for this kind of thing regardless of the carrier that offers it.

cant wait until i start hearing why my bill so high cause people have tapped into and started using it….LMFAO!!!

The 5GB cap kills what could have been a great idea.

How many wifi devices does sprint have? 8350i and…

  • Dan

Touch Pro and the Palm Pro both have Wifi as well as the Pre. I think that is it though unless the HTC 6800 has it as well.

I have to agree… a 5GB limit for $60/month is just plain stupid. I know it’s not really the direct competition as this device is mobile, but when you consider that you can get a decent DSL connection with no cap for $20/month (though that is for the slow tier.. but still faster than EVDO, I believe) this device starts looking really expensive.

Yes, this device is mobile. Yes, this device works in areas where DSL/Cable may not be available… but is that worth 3x the price and an unrealistic bandwidth cap?

  • Brendan

$.05 a MB is nothing! Verison charges $.25 and ATT charges $.48 overages. Sprint is still the cheapest and has the fastest internt. I dont see why you would choose anything else. For all those that have the unlimited plan, keep it! Its the best plan you will ever get!

  • blah

if phone has wifi… why not change firmware/software to let it run as an open access point? connect any device and connect to other open access points. bridge bandwidth & distribute traffic. done. no need to depend solely on cell network paid by one person! crazy

I live so far in the sticks I have to have sunlight trucked in. My Verizon EVDO modem is pretty much my only choice for reliable internet access. I hate paying more money for less throughput but I’m kinda stuck. I stay the heck off youtube and bittorent so I’ve never approached the 5GB limit. I’m waiting for Obama’s promise to expand broadband access and keeping my ears open for something better. This would be cool so I can use the Wi-Fi on my NOT verizon blackberry.

  • jazzyl

I’m also against the 5GB data cap why should they call it unlimited data plan if its limited to 5GB?

    Sent via BlackBerry.

Another benefit is that it doesn’t matter what OS you are using. I had a Linux netbook that I could not configure to reliably work with the 3g USB device but works flawlessly with the 3g Cradlepoint router. No special driver software is needed with a router like this.

I am confused. If you simply want to use this device as a mobile hotspot when you are traveling on the road (because most hotels/motels have free wireless), you have to pay $150?! I thought about it, but I would only need this thing in-transit. That does not seem worth it.
