More fail, less Epix; major bug plagues another AT&T / Samsung handset

Software

Ahh the Samsung Impression. It’s arguably the sexiest feature phone AT&T carries right now, with its 3.2-inch WQVGA AMOLED touchscreen, slide out QWERTY, 3 megapixel camera, HTML Web browser and plenty more. Specs aside however, the Impression appears to be the next victim in a still-forming line of Samsung handsets from AT&T stricken with severe bugs. First was the Epix, which was plagued with freezes until a patch fixed the random error and brought on uncontrollable crashes. Next up, the Samsung Impression. If a user enables T9 and then types the letter “I” followed by a space, the handset will crash immediately. “I” of course, happens to be a pretty common letter to be followed by a space. Now, we all know that every phone has bugs. All of them. The issue here is the severity of the bugs plaguing Samsung handsets that available from AT&T. We’re talking about consistent freezing and crashing here, not a random blip or glitch that is easy to pass over. We love the direction Samsung is headed lately on the hardware side of things, but we sincerely hope the combination of Samsung and AT&T doesn’t turn out to spell continued problems where quality control is concerned.

Thanks, Amir!

    Samsung needs to issue an firmware update immediately.

    for everyone wondering why do you use t9 with a full keyboard.. the impression has a feature so when you turn the phone to landscape (with the phone closed) it brings up the famous touchscreen samsung qwerty keyboard.. and at that point is when you experience the bugs so people get you facts straight before question the all mighty boy genius

    BLackberry Bold… did anybody read my post about the update coming out on 5/29?

  • BlueWombat

    Matt S – My question is what will the fix cover? As I stated earlier, my daughter is having issues with freezes texting with the physical keyboard and no t9, yet most of the comments seem to revolve around the virtual keyboard crashing when used with t9.

    Do you know if the fix is intended to address issues with the physical keyboard? I’m watching the 30 day return window for the phone tick down and have already replaced it once, so I’m hoping for a positive resolution.

    @Matt S
    I was referring immediately as like right. Samsung screwed this up, and it is customers who are going to suffer. This phone is all about messaging, and this kind of issue can hurt the reputation on both Samsung and AT&T.
    Those of you who say, it is not AT&T’s fault. I think that’s not true. I realized that samusng made this phone, but AT&T should have tested the phone to make sure there are no flaws.
    At the end, this is business as usual for both Samsung and AT&T.

    @Bluewombat
    My samsung impression only freezes when I use T9 on virtual keyboard. When I use physical keyboard with T9, it does not freeze at all. Without T9, I can text fine on both virtual keyboard and physical keyboard.
    I would talk to the AT&T store manager to see what he can do for you. (Like what would happen after 30 days.)

    @attguy

    It is not for you to judge what customers want.
    Customers are not babies, and they should decide what they want. If they want T9, they should have T9 keyboard that does not crash.

    i work for att wireless and i just did exactly what you said NOT to do in this article with both of the live impression models in the store and neither one of them crashed. Im not sure where you got your info from but it is incorrect.

      Wow go figure a AT&T employee not being able to reporduce the bug. Mike I went to the AT&T store and had the Sales Rep try the problem. Not only did it freeze on the floor model but when he got the Manager she took three out of back stock and they all did the same thing. As a matter of fact two would not send a text and kept showing sending but would never send even after ten minutes of watching the sending process on the screen. It was classic. The Manager sent her remaing stock back to samsung and stated she would let he boss know she witnessed this issue first hand so it can be delt with. Samsung messed up and they need to fix the porblem. LG took the Xenon off the market because of software issues Samsung should own up to the mistake and do the same thing after they replace all Impression owners with new phones. Sorry to burst your bubble Mike.

    weird, i got the impression last week and I can’t get reproduce this bug.

  • JOnG Alvarez

    i tried it on 2 impression here and nothing happen so i dunno if its a certain firmware

  • Matt

    I tried it the day this came out and nothing but i just tried it again and it did it. it didn’t do it when the phone is vertical but when u turn it horizontal and use the virtual keypad not the physical keypad that’s when it froze. it did not frezze when the phone was vertical.

  • Impressionist

    I’m an ATT rep and can confirm the glitches first hand. I personally am carrying the impression and have experienced on a daily basis the freeze up, WHILE using the slideout keyboard.

    There are 2 glitches, and not reproduceable on every phone, but it is common enough to be an overall issue.

    The T9 is a glitch, and there is a messaging glitch with the physical keyboard. I have not tracked down what exactly produces the physical keyboard freeze, it seems to be with random text messages.

  • phonetech09

    this is so true i have witnessed this first hand in the store and with my own device. utter rubbish. just another waste of consumers time buying this device.

  • saywhatnow

    I’ve had the Impression for over a month now and I’ve never had that problem. I tried replicating the glitch several times, but my phone didn’t freeze once. Perhaps it doesn’t affect all devices?

  • Tracy Knights

    This bus appears to be phone specific. My husband and I both got the Impression and mine would crash typing the A or Q on the on screen keyboard with the T9 on, and his did not. The phone not only crashed but powered off and back on like a reboot. I exchanged the phone and have had no further problems with the issure

  • me

    my dad and i both have the same phone and mine crashes when i do this and his doesn’t they have the same software. the way i see this is this is just a random fluke that happens with only some phones of this model.

  • Salvador

    My phone freezes when I use the hardware keyboard on my phone when I am texting haven’t paid attention to the combination of keys but when I figure it out will post on here.

  • R.G.

    I have the impresiion too…. ive tried to do this glitch but not working… :/ am i just lucky or what?

    • anonymous

      they fixed that T9 glitch with a software update last summer

  • impressionnn

    i have tried this on my impression but it doesnt crash?? but my impression messes up all the time by not sending a text message causing me to power off then back on and i also have problems with the slide out key board sometimes it just doesnt work right i have no idea what is going on but i emailed samsung and they said they are coming out with a software update for the Samsung Impression the month of June. this update is supposed to fix all the problems and bugs so lets hope it works!!! XD

  • anon

    Let’s hope they ARE coming out with that software update. I just got the Impression today and I’m fully expecting to switch it out. I can’t reproduce the t9 error and I haven’t been sending a lot of texts with it yet so lord knows if I’ll be getting any rebooting errors that are so famous with the impression….

    Okay I’ve owned my Impression for about 6 months and I’ve never used the virtual keyboard because well it has a full keyboard that opens?!?! Why would you bother with the virtual keyboard? With my experience no one T9 works as it should, they dont “know” what the hell you are trying to spell and you waste time going back through an correcting it. If you bought the phone for the full pull out keyboard no problems, if you are buying a phone for the touch screen, buy the LG VU… the feature wasnt that important since they have the pull out keyboard. Yes it would be nice if they bothered to send out a software update but you buy the phone with the features you want and they push their important features. Some one please explain why you use the virtual keyboard instead of opening up the phone and using the keyboard?!

  • wilfish

    not impressed by the impression, the ATT stores sales people along with samsung reps will not admitt there is a problem with the phone they’re willing to sell it and tell you nothing about freezing up. I printed out an arms length list of complaints from both company sites took them into the the ATT store and fax to sansung both just dance around the bush. class action law suit soumds like a good idea, any probono attorneys out there want to help

    I Have had mine since November. Texts to me started to be non responsive. 3 days ago I could not get the screen to function properly I could not scroll my contacts list, would get the dial pad when pushing the contacts button. The numbers that I was trying to dial would result in the left most number like 2 or 3 recorded as a 1, 5 & would show up as a 4.

    What was amazing is that I could receive calls and call people back that called me, Bluetooth worked fine. Internet no problem, then everything started working perfectly and has worked all day. Att customer service said it had been wet which has never happened and it will cost me 300+ for a replacement as moisture is not a warranty issue, bull ****, it has never been wet, their determination on this is a little white square patch under the cover. If it is red it has been wet, if it is pink it has been wet, only pure white means it has not been wet according to them. I was on the phone with them for 3 hours and I am not happy. It works fine now!? when had about 85% humidity for two days when it quit. but that doesn’t count. Att will not warranty this phone they said.
