Nokia's N97 has a seriously wimpy processor

Opinions

Oh boy. In the past there has been a lot of talk about Nokia’s upcoming flagship N97 and why it has some difficulties keeping its apps up and running, and now we have official word as to the likely reason — it’s powered by an ARM 11 processor that clocks in at a limp 434MHz. Seriously. While we know it’s not always about how many MHz a processor has but how efficient the processor itself is (as well as other components), this is a flagship handset we’re talking about here. After all, the N97 will likely command an insane price tag up around $800 with a processor that only has a 65MHz advantage over the hum-drum 5800 XpressMusic. And If you want to get even more snooty, here’s a little food for thought:

  • BlackBerry Bold – 624MHz
  • HTC Magic – 528MHz
  • HTC Touch Pro2 – 528MHz
  • Palm Pre – est. 600MHz
  • Samsung i8910 – 600MHz

C’mon Nokia!

Well, I’ve been using my Nokia N97 for almost a week now and I love it, but… A few dissapointments: Flash lite 3.0 can’t play anything thats 9.0 and above… so sadly hulu is out… But some megavideo is in :D ! The processor and ram really could’ve been beefed… a lot… I’d shell out an EXTRA 300 on top of what I paid just to have a current proc (Cortex A8 @600mhz+) and 256megs of ram because the flash that it can play lags quite often. I have to say, had they used a better proc and used proper flash, I’d give it 9.75/10

In some cases Samsung is more attractive over Nokia but…being a Nokia user all my life, I find other brands not so “complete”. I don’t know if that is because I got used to nokia software/menus but what I know for sure is that all the people around me who had motorola, Samsung, SE etc had slowly but surly converted to Nokia.
As you all probably notice Nokia does not do one thing at a high level (like for example some brands are putting a very good camera but the rest in the phone is mediocre,or puts a larger/brighter/nicer touch display but it can’t send a lousy MMS (FTW!!!) and so on )but it does almost you need at a normal to high level.
This is the most important aspect that made me buy only Nokia phones.
In the end, all I want to say is that don’t expect to find a perfect phone who does everything superb because you won’t! None of the brands want to create a perfect one because this will impact the sells. The marketing strategy is like this(in my opinion): “let’s create a phone that has everything they ask for BUT let’s make it slow processing.” and then the customers will say “oh, it would have been perfect if it’d had a faster processor!” Then the brands will create a phone with a much faster processor BUT with less on everything (without a good camera or GPS or what ever). So the costumer will go and buy the phone ’cause it has a much faster, a thing that they greatly missed in the old one. And so on! the circle continues giving the costumer A or B and not A+B in one handset.
ps: it’s funny how things got similar to the PC MHZ’s race. More processor power! More processor power!:D
