Maemo 5 Beta SDK is now ripe for the picking

General

Nokia’s Internet Tablets haven’t exactly been a massive success on the user adoption front but Nokia isn’t one to give up. While the company did recently bail on the latest iteration of its N810 tablet, we know the Finnish giant was just looking to distance itself from WiMAX. Nokia is most definitely still cooking up a new tablet sequel and now developers can get a taste of its beta OS — as of this afternoon, the Beta SDK for Maemo 5 is available to all for downloading. Notable additions beyond the alpha release include:

  • HSPA data connectivity support
  • A new version of Modest, the open source email app
  • High definition camera support (still capture and video capture)
  • OMAP3 processor support
  • Hardware-based graphics acceleration support
  • Widget development support

The bad news? Maemo 5 will reportedly not run on older N800 and N810 model tablets, only future offerings. Anyone excited for a new Nokia IT with a fresh new OS?

Thanks, Luke!

wont run on my N800!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • hey ya

As long as they make a tablet with a quicker browser this time around, it’s fine with me.

Before people blast nokia for no longer supporting the older tables, just remember that individual process instruction sets only remain valid so long. Even x86 marches on with new instruction sets as time goes on, which means operating systems can and will only support them for so long. Time to move past the days of arm4 and arm5 and slow processors that sported them to make way for a brighter arm powered future which will sport not only more muscle, but battery efficiency to boot.

I will blast away! I foolishly bought the N770, which was only supported for a very short period of time, and completely dropped before I had the thing a year.

Now, those condescending N800 and N810 owners who thought I was being a whiny baby are getting the same bad medicine. How’s that taste, huh? Yeah, that’s what I thought!

If you have to choose between the No-See-A Tablet and the iPhone, make the right choice. The iPhone. It won’t get dropped. Hey, I don’t even have an iPhone, but this choice is easy. Do I sound bitter? Well, I am.

I haven’t actively used my N800 in over a year, and rarely update it anymore when new things come out for it since the internal memory slot is fried.

Hmm I actually picked up my N810 after my iphone. With Canola and wayfinder it makes an excellent “car pc”, that’s for sure.

For me, it served all of my netbook wanting needs without some crappy plasticy netbook. If the N810 had built in 3g/wcdma I wouldn’t need a phone. Sadly the N810 kinda makes my iphone obselete as it can’t tether with it, so I’ve been carrying around my sprint BB 8330 so when I get out of wifi range the N810 can auto-tether with it.

These Nokia tablets are hugely underrated. Seriously awesome little devices, I can already tell I’ll get way more use out of the 810 than I would have any netbook. I guess I’m in the minority in wanting a “really souped up and customizable PDA/PMP” vs “a really crappy cheapo little laptop”

I agree, I had the same concerns with my N770, between that and a really bad warranty experience, I have decided to not buy any more nokia devices.

The future for NXXX devices http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer Yes, it works on N770 too.

As for the browser on N8X0: try Tear, it’s miles ahead of the default browser.
