Optimum Online announces Ultra service, 101Mbps/15Mbps for $99

That’s pretty sweet. I have their Boost offering.. I’m hoping they boost it up a little more.

Wow, I have been hearing all about this via various websites due to there announcement. It sure does suck to be stuck with Time Warner here in Southern California where they have a monopoly on the market and have nothing compared to Verizon or Cablevision. Time Warner sucks!

Before everybody gets excited, lets see if this offering actually materializes! I just called OOL and the CSR had no information to go on! After finding a supervisor the information was equal to the content of the press release. No info regarding possible equipment change etc. The CSR asked if she could call me back on the 11th. so let’s see what happens

I just added Ultra to my Optimum account. It is available, as of today, and I can’t wait to get everything set up. OK, I’m a little nuts, but 101MBps is just too tempting to pass on. The way I figure it, a lot of people pay the $200 bill I will have every month, but they have all the extra channel packages. I have basic cable, telephone, and now super fast internet. I have a gigabit firewall and a gigabit switch, so I should actually see somewhere close to 100MB.
With Boost I get ~29MBps down and 5MBps up, when I get the Ultra set up, I will post my Speedtest.net results and let you know what I actually get.

Um smninbrooklyn 100MB would be crazy cause that would be like 800Mb but sadly its 100Mb not 100MB, 100mb is the equivalent of somewhere between 12 and 13 MB. I wish we could have an 800Mb line. Probably only able to get that in Japan. They probably got Gb lines already.

WOW!, and Cablevision was supposed to be the old guy. Cablevision was one of the first ones on the block, Verizon was the new “all that w/ FIBER OPTICS!”

lol verizon got pooped on YOU WISH! i dont even pay extra for my 20/20 line and i no matter what time of day what time of yr i get my full 20/20 i upload just as fast as i download 2.4 megs a second and i have seen it using torrents cablevision sux its never a sustained rate of download or upload what person residential needs 101 dl anyways please tell me what sever you download from that will upload 101 megs upload speed lmao there is no use its all overkill now i downloaded a legit 1 gig test file from optonline server and took 7 min 10 seconds using my 20/20 from fios other then that what server on the web will let you download a rate of 12.65 MBps a second which is the same as 101 mbps just overkill plus as stated b4 u really dont even get true speed with cable unlike a real ISP like FIOS . lmao

it will never stay at 101/15 because DAMN OPTIMUM is on a shared network.. after everyone in my building and the buildings around me whom all share the same hud.. it will be down to 50down 2up or some crap.. fuk this im getting fios

First off I’ll say that I am VERY intrigued by this service and it’s pricing. A 100Mbps connection for $100 a month sounds too good to be true.

But is that because it IS too good to be true? I’m willing to bet that you don’t get anywhere near 100Mbps and that’s just the maximum speed which only happens rarely when you’re downloading from a really fast server.

I would say the average speed is probably a little less than HALF that. Around 45-55Mbps on average and 70-80Mbps on a good day. I mean the fact that it’s 101Mbps downstream and ONLY 15Mbps upstream shows you that they’re fudging the numbers somewhere and I would be willing to guess it’s the downstream.

Why would a 101Mbps connection only get 15Mbps upstream?? The ratio is usually always about 3:1 for down/up. Like my current connection gets an average of 10Mbps downstream and 3Mbps upstream. So a 101Mbps downstream should be getting at least 30Mbps upstream. Which is why I said the downstream is probably not 101Mbps and more like 45Mbps. Makes more sense since 15Mbps is 1/3 of 45Mbps downstream.

Anyone actually USE this connection yet? What’s your average speed and is it stable?

I have Optimum Ultra for over a month now. Prior to Ultra I was using FIOS 50/20. Contrary to what the initial poster posted I was being charged a monthly rate of $89.99 which came to about $92.50 with tax. I did not have any other services with Ver thing Verizon. One other thing I’d like to point out is with my 50/20 FIOS I would always get a solid 60mbit down. Yes, more than was promised.

After 5 weeks of completely switching over Optimum Ultra here are my findings. Does Ultra deliver on its 101mbit per second? No, but who really expected it to? Does it even come close? Yes, it really does or at least close enough for my expectations. My speeds averaged between 75-94 mbit. I hovered more around 85mbit at night and 95mbit in the morning. It is impressive speeds. The real killer in this deal? One word. Cablevision. It took 5 onsite visits to fix the frequent disconnects that would not only cause me to loose internet service but also phone. On top of my first $622 prorated bill that included a $300 activation fee, internet fee and Ultra fee I was a bit taken back by the decision I made all in hopes of cutting my movie download times (public domain of course) from 15 minutes to 7. When I called Cablevision to enquire about the bill I found out I was still being charged for my old provisioned Motorola Surboard with Boost service. This seems to be the same old story with Cablevision. Infrequent speeds, frequent broadband dropouts, distasteful sales tactics and poor customer support. If you can stomach the last sentence than Ultra is for you.

I’ve had the Boost Service and havent gotten more than 5500 download the last 4 months. Had multiple techs tell me there’s a problem somewhere in the system. Today they told me if I switched to Ultra, this problem will go away…I’d be happy with the Boost service if they actually delivered it…Now I’m supposed to gamble on a $300 install and $99 per month to get the speed I’ve been trying to get for months.

I switched to Boost and saw my upload speeds jump from 2 to a solid 5 Mbps. I also saw my download speeds drop from 15Mbps to 6-8Mbps and rarely higher–never what I was promised, and much less than what I had with basic. They told me it was my system causing the problem and the data was sent on a different frequency. I disconnected everything that might cause interference–nothing changed. I dropped back to what I had before. I’d gladly switch to Ultra if I was guaranteed better performance.

All I know is france has 100mbs up and 100mbs down
for only $100. And we are still running with standard 15 down 5 up. And with ultra 100 down 15 up. Technology here in America is being held back.
