Microsoft and Verizon reportedly cooking up an iPhone competitor

Rumor

Just what the world needs… Another iPhone killer. If the Wall Street Journal’s report is to be believed, it looks like that USA Today story may have omitted a relatively important detail regarding Verizon’s “iPhone” offering — it might not be an iPhone at all. Citing an apparently different group of “people familiar with the matter,” the Journal indicates that Big Red is currently in talks with Microsoft regarding a project with the codename “Pink”. Pink will be a Microsoft-designed iPhone rival with a multimedia focus and, undoubtedly, a big touchscreen. According to the report, Microsoft’s iPhone-alike will also feature a tweaked version of the Windows Mobile OS with “new software capabilities.” While Microsoft is said to be involved with the design of the phone, a third party will build it. What do you think guys — can Pink possibly tide you over until an LTE iPhone drops?

Thanks, Mark!

    I’m pretty getting the inside info as I’m close to a VZW manager. An iphone is coming to Verizon in 2010. I didn’t ask about this Pink thing. I actually was asking about the Omnia HD and he told me about the iphone thing. I’m assuming we will have both phones. I don’t see why not as Verizon is a huge company.

    I really don’t think Verizon should be bashed for passing it up. They were trying to due what they though was right and it may have bit them in the ass. But come on who wants to sell a phone you can’t even put insurance and doesn’t have a removeable battery. I think if Apple fixes these problems, updates the phone (camera, new features, better screen quality) and comes to Verizon there would be no stopping the iPhone (no matter what carrier it would be on). Like MadeMike said, people have to push the envelope to beat this phone and their not. At least no in the U.S.

    @Sonya

    I’ve gotten misinformation from VZW managers before…they hear stuff just like the people hear do, and then they regurgitate it. I mean, if USA Today said it, then it must be true! I would say double check your “facts”. Not saying that you are wrong, but that manager doesn’t know for sure…they are just speculating.

    I have been to the phone stores over and over again, looking for the phone that even comes close to the iPhone in UI and ease of use. I do not own an iPhone (have a contract with another carrier and not fond of AT&T) but I have an iPod Touch. Compared to any device I have owned, (Palm, MotoQ, HTC, and other windows mobile devices) flat out is that WIndows Mobile is terrible. The GUI is bad and you really can not use the browser for anything useful. Apple nailed it. The apps, the browser, the GUI, the actions you do with your fingers.
    I have not had my hands on the Pre yet.

    Unless Microsoft rewrites the Mobile OS, it will still be a clunky old system good for email and phone calls only.

    Agree with dakota…I have been with Verizon for four years. I am VERY pleased with their network, service, call quality, etc. I’ve even enjoyed my little clamshell phones. I bailed on my AT&T contract – a costly venture – when I couldn’t take the dropped calls and jammed network anymore.

    I am so ready for an iPhone….but I do not want the service that comes with it. If there is even a glimmer of hope the iPhone will come to Verizon, I will wait.
