Apple's App Store hits one billion downloads

Software

Well holy crap. Exactly 287 days after the iTunes App Store opened its virtual doors and made its first sale, Apple has served up its billionth App Store download. It’s an impressive feat no doubt, but at the moment we’re more interested in finding out exactly who it was that pushed the counter into ten digits because they’ve won a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod touch, a $10,000 iTunes gift card and a Time Capsule. That’s right — one lucky S.O.B. has $13,746 worth of Apple goods headed his or her way, likely in a gift basket milled from a single piece of aluminum.

@digitalfreek: It was inherent. By downloading you signed up.

@Len: Pfft, with the quality of most of them I’d guess the billionth deleted app came just shortly after the billionth download.

Not really but man there is a lot of crap on there. Its a numbers game. Just like the billionth song probably isn’t even listened to anymore.

Remember this number also includes iTouch users downloading. The iTouch is selling a lot more than iPhones. Apple doesn’t mention these small facts intentionally.
I love how the Iphone gets media attention. I could point to some websites where Nokia, Sony Ericsson or Java apps are getting over 5 million downloads per app. I also love the Iphone for making other phone manufacturers move their butts.

I think the figures are – 21 million iphones 17 million ipod touches at the moment. Yes, you can point to places that have downloaded 5 million apps but this is 1 billion. That is 200 times bigger. So something worth shouting about. Especially that it was achieved in less than 300 days.

the rules are very misleading. you can enter up to 25 times a day, enter for free, but it says “The prize will be awarded for the entry (either through an app download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 999,999,999th app. The potential winner will be determined by the order of the entries received” so i dont get it. im pretty sure its a random drawing from everyone who entered the contest from start to finish, but…? who really cares right? the chances of me winning is 1 in a billion… haha

I’m certainly no fanboy of Apple, and only now that I got my third iPhone 3G (the rest were sold for a bunch of dough :D ), but since OS 2.2, I’m loving the device!

As for the Billionth download: Very very impressive. Slice and dice it any way you want, the AppStore is tremendous innovation, and a tremendous success. It has already been copied by Microsoft and RIM, and the latter of which has already finished with their “AppWorld”.

Personally, I don’t mind either way, as the BlackBerry will always be my favorite mobile OS, but I’m looking forward to the next iPhone 3G, or whatever it will be called.
