AT&T pits Pre against iPhone 3G in internal doc

Rumor

However odd it may seem that a company would issue internal talking points comparing the iPhone 3G to a handset that hasn’t even been released, it looks like that’s just what AT&T has done — according to a report at least. An alleged leaked internal document obtained by Pre Central suggests AT&T is in the midst of circulating a comparison chart that pits Palm’s upcoming Pre against AT&T’s lord and savior, the iPhone 3G. The doc runs down a variety of categories and explains why Apple’s handset trumps the Pre in all of them. If you’re one of those analysts participating in the current round of “Palm Pre is doomed” projections, it looks like AT&T might disagree with you — why else would they be prepping employees to fight Pre fever a month ahead of the handset’s launch? Hit the jump for a bigger shot of the slide.

@josh, you know tmobile gives you the same thing for 99 dollars.

Sprint pretty much went to that plan to keep customers who wanted the instinct and to try and sucker people into an inferior service. I worked for sprint, I have never seen a bigger bunch of incompetent customers and employees. The stupid person came here to cash a rebate check! and whats even worse construction worker mike tried to do it!!!

AT&T has nothing to worry about…the pre will become the next ghetto thug phone for sprint..no worries

They should have compared the iToy to ANY BlackBerry. Then the iPod that makes phone calls would have lost out big time.

Well I’m not counting Pre will destroy the Iphone due that Sprint was calling the Samasung Instinct the Iphone killer The Pre has nice features but there will be major issues when it comes out just like what happened to the first Iphone will have to see. Personally I hate Sprint I hate in the fact that there phones i mean their firmware diest let no file transfers over bluetooth and there plans are cheap but you get what you pay for. ATT has more coverage a bit more expensive but there Iphone is backed up both ATT and Apple and worked together to solve and bring the iPhone to the top. Tell me not I hate Apple to but I have to admit that the Pre has a lot to catching up to do because there are millions and millions of applications of developers for Iphone and some for Blackberry and I don’t know how may for many for the Pre. ATT also does have an edge with Worldwide Factor why do you need a smartphone that works in the world in this ever changing world economy. Per will be a worthy contender but I do not think that sprint will have control of this phone. Palm has been having fiscal earning issues and needs money we could see this phone pop up on other networks as well then that might be a problem for the iPhone but I doubt it.

why do people say sprint service is so bad when analysts and actual customers disagree.. cdma is a superior tech why do you think 3g gsm phones use it..

  • Miguel

They Said the Xbox (Pre) Couldnt compete with the PS2 (IPhone) either when it first came out….

  • Blackberry Bold

    @youngC

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think T-mobile offers everything plan at like 89.99 dollars? I could be wrong, but that’s what I think they offer. Also, T-mobile offer unlimited talking for 50.00 dollars a month to their existing users.

    @josh
Verizon and AT&T do not need to offer unlimited everything for 99.99 dollars because they are doing well right now. Look at their stocks.
Sprint is not a great cellphone company. Look at their subscribers.

didnt they do the same thing (comparison where the iphone SEEMS better) when the storm and g1 launched??

  • YoungC

@ blackberry bold yes the 50$ thing is correct i think the unlimted plan comparable to sprints is 99.99

and yes you are correct look @ the customers…LMFAO!!!either they come into the store with their phone up their keemar complaining about their phone

or someone who should not have a smartphone coming in asking to transfer contacts, and basically cry when they lose all their info….because they diddnt back it up on the computer

people talking about ATT coverage kill me. My wife has an Iphone, i have a sprint curve, my plan cost less than hers, i have unlimited everything, hers not even close, my gps picks up quicker, internet loads faster(except wifi) and i have way less dropped calls then her. sprint has a bad rep due to customer service, but their network imo is great.

  • James

    @ celz.

You are an idiot if you think CDMA technology out does GSM. If it’s so good, why isn’t it supported globally? You, sir, FAIL. And people diss Sprint’s network because it reallyd does suck. Sprint doesn’t have the money to invest into a 4g network. Hell, they don’t even own 1 tower anymore! They lease their towers!!! Yeah..sprint is such a great company, they have no capital whatsoever and lose a million customers every quarter.

  • Bobby

Other cell companies lease their towers too dummy…

  • Mopo

I don’t know why this is funny or odd to people. It is standard practice for most companies to have an internal document like this; it would be stupid not to have business intelligence on an upcoming competitor. All you can do is prepare, since no one really knows if this product will do well or not.

  • DPL$$$

I think the Pre will do very well for Sprint. AT&T and VZW have a large sub base along with a good marketing dept. The iPhone is not for everyone. I don’t own one, don’t want one. But I know a lot of people with the iphone. Most of them constantly complain about it. Bad battery life, lack of 3G service, freezing up are some daily complaints I hear.

In my area all 4 carriers have excellent service so roaming or whatever is not an issue. Sprint right now has the best value in terms of price plans IMO

what does “nuff” mean? is that referring to snuff without the “s”? get your facts straight prior to runnin’ yo’ yap’ – translation: diarea of the mouth…

  • mrdpr

people ATT is buying Centennial because they need the 3g network for the itone. all the sprint haters will fail to see our company fail. LOL Palm Pre is better than the Itone and thats is a fact. The now network is better….

  • J

this document doesn’t look anything like an internal AT&T document… i don’t buy for one second that this is legit… i’m calling bullshit.

  • backbeat

Anyone who has ever held any position of authority in marketing will tell you that preparing this type of Pro/Con comparison is boiler-plate. This is the ultimate in non-news and would only be news if such a comparison did -not- exist. Filed under: No one cares

  • Jarred

Its nothing new for companies to ready their sales staff with talking points againt a competing device/company. I was with Best Buy for three yearsm nothing new………

The “actual customers” are leaving Sprint, they are losing customers to this very day. Not just in 2007, 2008, but in March 2009 they lost customers.

Sprint publishing certain aspects of certain polls does not make for a full picture. Overall their customers do not like their service and stay because of price.

I want to see what the next iPhone comparison with the Pre will look like

  • http://Anonymous Anonymous

That’s not a comparison chart, it’s just bashing the Pre. Maybe not everyone wants to use shitty bloated proprietary software to do something as simple as putting music on ones phone. Some people want a real keyboard instead of a touch screen where the letters are too close, and you don’t get any feedback. It doesn’t have 25,000 apps yet because it just came out.

The iPhone isn’t for everyone, and that’s why Palm created this solution. No, it’s not for everyone, but that’s why we have a choice.
