New Sony PSP rumor refresh; out before Christmas

With the E3 expo coming up in June, rumors of a refreshed PSP are surging once again. Now billed as yet another “iPhone killer”, chatter surrounding the possibility of a new PSP is reportedly firming up a bit with inside sources seemingly becoming more lose lipped lately. Current status of rumors: slider form factor,  touchscreen, two analog thumbsticks in addition to standard controls, “far more similar to the iPhone than the current device” (whatever that means) and a release scheduled before Christmas 2009. No, it certainly won’t look like the sweet mock up above but the more rumors that get pumped into the mill lately, the more they’ve been lining up on common ground. Sony can definitely use the buzz a device like this would create, that’s for sure.

    Add “removal of the UMD drive” and “digital downloads” to that equation, and I’ll be getting one.

    I had one of the original PSPs and got rid of it due to the lack of games (at the time). The library is there now, but I’m not interested in the system in its current incarnation.

    But combine the stuff I mentioned with the stuff mentioned in the article, and that’s an exciting piece of kit.

    Of course, they’d better put a significant amount of internal storage in there, or we’re going to have some issues.

    How is this anything like an iPhone?
    It has buttons and a sliding frame.
    Will everything with a screen painted black and silver going to be called an iPhone clone now?

    How could a GAMING system be an iPhone killer. An iPhone is an PHONE, not a gaming system. They should be labeling the psp2 an nentindo DS killer, not an iPhone killer.

    the mockup looks cool… but the ergonomics and actual usability would suck ass. imagine holding this thing for extended periods of time – without getting carpal tunnel.

    but sony should take queues from shiny, futuristic mockup fantasies.

    I understand that Sony is trying to hold their own in the handheld market but honestly this is too little too late. I mean I commend the PSP and Sony for getting Nintendo off their asses and make the DSi but come on. With the possibility of UMD staying, little PSP exclusive games, Memory Stick Pro compatibility, and more this thing will have a laundry list of problems. They should just focus on the PS3 and getting more exclusives for that system. As much as i thought a PS3 remake of FF7 was impossible PS3 needs it now.

    The mockup is beautiful…I gave up on portable gaming after the gameboy color and whatnot but I’d definitely pick that up…come on Sony WOW me…and yea exactly my point everything is in comparison to the iphone these days…makes no sense.
