Apple/iPhone rumor of the day: OmniVision to produce 3.2 and 5 megapixel image sensors

Rumor

We know that listening to any form of an Apple rumor — especially those that involve to the iPhone — is akin to an hour long session of water-boarding, but you’re just going to have to take this one on the chin for the sake of the team. It seems that the loveable lads over at DigiTimes have yet to have enough fun with their Apple rumor-mongering and are now reporting that Apple and OmniVision have both signed off on a contract which would have the latter produce 3.2 megapixel image sensors for the upcoming iPhone revamp. In addition to this, the same source is also reporting that a 5 megapixel image sensor is also included in the deal which is not iPhone bound but rather for a different product all together which is slated to launch much later this year, perhaps for that rumored touchscreen netbook or “the other” iPhone. We’ll see…

More sauce to the rumor I reported on earlier: AppleInsider reports of a job posting specific to “camera module development for iPhone and iPod” and earlier reported on video editing icons hidden within the 3.0 firmware.

Apple’s already replaced your walkman/cd player with an Apple device, your phone with an Apple device…next up is your digital camera. Canon/Nikon etc. haven’t really focused on innovation in this space–they’ve been too busy cramming in megapixels to get sales. They’ve (so far) missed the boat on social network integration, mobile syncing of albums, and are just now adding HD video.

Apple wants to sell you a device that takes high quality snaps and 720p video, adds social media integration (i.e. face recognition and auto-tagging), video editing, and allows you to sync to the web on the go. Oh, and it’s also a full-featured iPod touch with apps to boot. Expect this to launch with upgrades to MobileMe that allow you to upload photos/videos once and automatically share across Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc. automatically.

Let’s be honest- who actually prints photos taken from their iphone? no one. Megapixels dont matter, as long as you can take quality photos, nothing else should matter.

I know OV has been working with Apple but they had a lot of inventory,
such OV2640 8M pcs and OV7690 13M pcs , which tese caused very heavy financial pressure and OV has tough time to deal with Apple for the contract.

I also know the true focus (Extended Depth of Focus ) of OV, lens and DSP chip combination made big mess and no success after they paid 4 yrs effort. they lost the credit of the Technological leadership.

I am not sure why Apple chose OV ?

Aptina has much better quality than OV…
