Skype for iPhone now available in U.S. App Store

General

Well, our Japanese brothers and sisters got a little head-start, but now we’ll be able to check it out for ourselves. Yes — it’s available right now. Let us know if you get your download on and what you think, ok?

Thanks, Daveizzle!

I don’t think this a Rogers issue, more like skype-apple agreement for canada.

it keeps saying i need to buy skype credit. I am trying to call skype to skype WTF.

what’s the point of this if you already have a voice plan? seriously don’t be cheap people

Based on the user reviews over at the iTunes store, this app seems to be a bit sucky. Hopefully they can work out the kinks before making it available for the Blackberry.

Kinda dumb… without background processing on iPhone, it’ll only work for outbound calls (guess thats better than nothing). So forget about using this with Grandcentral as one of your ringing numbers.

  • Dtest54

blah, notifications are in 3.0 – they can use those soon.

also, Patrick i guess you have never traveled overseas or called international from cell phone, because Skype is way cheaper in those cases. especially if your doing skype to skype.

I was not able to complete a single call! I downloaded the software, created an account and put in $10. Then, everything went downhill. I am calling my home number to test it, and I receive messages in German, Italian and French telling me my number does not exist. I approached the Skype contact site on the web and I access a site with Chinese letters. When I switch to English, then it becomes an advertisement for a phone device, no opportunity to address any of these issues.
Either the software will hopefully become upgraded and mature, or this is a complete fraud. Has anybody else had similar experiences?

Works great on mi iPod touch 2nd gen. I made 2 international calls
    With no crash at all!
Note that it won’t work on the *** 1st gen iPod touch***

    Ok, here is my follow-up.

Thanks Adi, that fix in Cydia fixes the crashing issues.

Also, if you have a subscription, dial 1 (it already puts a + for you) then the number your trying to dial (15125555555)

If you have a SkypeIN number from skype… And are running the app on your iPhone or Touch, will incoming calls from landlines to your SkypeIN number ring through and be answerable? (assuming the app is open of course)
Can anyone with a SkypeIN number confirm please.

Canada doesn’t need love, they have Timmy Ho’s…lol

There are many purposes to this. one is people have friends and family all over the world. So international calling is one. Second even if you can afford to give your wireless carrier all your money…why not save a little for yourself, and third you can chat to other people on skype if you are into chatting.

My IT girl fixed it :-) This is awesome! No problems at all. Good program.

I received an answer from Skype to the problems I described above and they have provided the solution to all my concerns. Specifically, they explained that all calls made by Skype have to include the country code etc. Practically, any call made in the US has to have the number 1 plus area code plus 7 digit phone number. Then it goes through with no issues. Most numbers in (at least my) Contacts are not formatted in that style and they have to be entered directly from the keyboard to go through. Not sure if there is a walk around solution to this, but at least it is a solvable problem in and by itself.

@Chipila, I’ve heard it can work on the 1g Touch, if you have v2.2 running and a dock port mic, like Macally… the Apple headset with mic def does not work, despite what the Apple saleguy said..

    You’re a legend thanks!
