HTC G2 with 3G and UMA gets the FCC rubber stamp of approval

General

Well, well, look at what we have here. It seems that the FCC has been busy as of late giving the HTC Magic a thorough examination and the good old bureaucratic stamp of approval. So what makes the T-Mobile USA-branded version of the Magic, known as the G2, so special? Well, not only does it have T-Mobile’s special 1700 MHz band of HSPA tacked on top of the 2100 MHz band for Europe and Asia, it also sports Wi-Fi with UMA for Hotspot@Home. Oh, and did we mention the camera has apparently been bumped up from 3.2 megapixels to 5 megapixels (because Americans like everything supersized)? Other than that, it looks like everything else with the device is going to be exactly as it is on the Vodafone version. Release timing and pricing are still a mystery for now but at least we have solid confirmation that the Magic is indeed coming to America, perhaps with a CTIA debut. Hit the jump for another shot.

Looks pretty sick, in a good way, lol. I wont hate, as long as the keyboard in the Cupcake Update is great. (that rhymed)

This phone will be mine (unless a Samsung Android phone comes soon).

  • damiaking

were is the android phone for sprint goddamm it !!!the only one getting adroid phones is t mobile

  • Jorge

That battery seems a bit bigger than the current G1′s, too!

They should have had UMA from the get-go, but hey I’m happy that they have included it this time around. The 5 megapixel camera sounds nice, but will be useless if it doesn’t have autofocus and doesn’t take good quality pictures. Let’s hope it does both extremely well, then T-Mobile and Google will really have a winner on their hands.

Hm, I wonder if they know there is a profession called “industrial designer”.

  • Steven

Just add a 3.5mm headphone jack and we would have a real winner here.

  • Paolo Cardoso

this g2 should come with the new cupcake update and it would be best if they input a new interface and a 3.5mm jack it would aslo be sweet if they can put in a zoom feature for the 5 megapixel camara

Are you SURE its not 1700/2100 USA and 900/2100 Europe/Asia and two different versions of the phones? I’ve read other places its two different HSDA selections based on market, unlike the G1.

As for UMA, why the hell didn’t any of TMobiles 3G phones have it to start?

This new HTC (whatever) seems to be very promising. As a long time Blackberry user I have been patiently waiting for a new phone that has it all. It is nice to know we will have several choices soon; the G2, Pre, new iPhone, etc..

  • veks

I want to see it in black.

  • azboricua

Looks good, the battery cover and inside on the back look like the BB 9630, a little.

  • Tygar_Prawns

This rocks… if only I could get an unlocked version for GSM in Canada…

Do you think the UMA would work on Rogers?

My 8900 with UMA kicks a$$! If only I could have 3G with UMA… works best when traveling.

  • Louis

Well, T-mobile usually allows you to unlock their phones after 90-days. So they may be found in other areas

Heres the thing; now you’re committed to cupcake being solid – and its the first iteration. HTC doesn’t exactly send their premium handsets for the android spec, so this thing could be a POS. And… WHATS THE PROC SPEED? My G1 is slow.

You can have a gazillion megapixel camera – if your image SENSOR isn’t bigger (read about DX vs. FX vs. point and shoot cameras) your image quality will always be garbage.

If consumers wouldn’t get hyped up on manufacturer PLOYS, but only legitimate qualitative differences, manufacturers would have to comply to compete where consumer focus IS. Learn what matters… only respond to IT, and the products you get will be better. :)

  • Truman

Theres officially no point in unlocking US 3G phones – NONE of the carriers are interchangable. Unlocking is a thing of GPRS past.

  • Melissa

    Yikes, this thing is hideoussss

  • Mr. Hi-Definition

This is what I’ve been waiting for. I currently have the G1 and I like android, I just feel it needs a little work and then it will be a lot better of a phone. And I like the fact that it will have the cupcake virtual qwerty and an upgraded camera from 3.2 to 5.0 megapixels. I do hope that it has autofocus and a good lens as well though because if it doesn’t, there isn’t any point of the increased megapixels.

BG, get a hands on with this one ASAP and compare it to all the hard hitters on each carrier and of course the G1…

  • jim

what about 5 megapixel and flash

  • Witty!

I’ve never owned an android phone, what is it that’s such a big draw?

  • Rey

hope this will come in orange too

  • BlueAnt

Does anyone know if it will have stereo bluetooth?

  • mike89z

BGR, did you read the FCC filing? I’m guessing no. Otherwise you would have seen the part where they didn’t test WLAN against the head because it wouldn’t be used for VoIP.
Seriously, it doesnt take long to factcheck and considering the source, you should have.
I do like this website and you guys usually do a good job! Don’t want to seem to negative, but its just that I get all excited and it took me all of 5 minutes to find the truth.
Sorry all, but it looks like no UMA still, which sux because I was hoping that it would become available for the G1(which I use and love) too!

  • Champcar

UMA is not considered VoIP since it directly ties into the GSM network.
