AT&T offering refurbished BlackBerry Bold for free

Exclusive

In the market for a new AT&T smartphone? Don’t care if it’s refurbished? The BlackBerry Bold is about as good as it gets from AT&T right now, and those of you who haven’t pulled the trigger yet are in for a treat. How does free sound? Regularly priced at $299.99 new and $199.99 refurbished, this is pretty much a steal as long as a new 2-year contract doesn’t scare you off. It looks like the free deal is only good online and only for today, so get a move on!

Thanks, Chris!

You can get insurance on the Bold refurb but at $6/mo. that’s $72/year. Add the cost of the $125 deductible and you’ve just paid $200 out of pocket if you replace the phone at the end of year 1. $200-$272 if you replace it during year 2. Not worth it. You’ll be able to buy another phone on ebay for less and probably a different model at that point.

    A few things.

You can get 1500 sms text/month for $10.00/mo. You have to ask for it.

I saw the Bold on sale at Best Buy for $129. New…with 2 year activation.

If you buy with American Express, you can use the buyer’s protection with AMEX to cover you if you have a problem with the phone. Cheaper than paying for insurance.

Some information to those who ordered with intent to use this on a family plan:

When the phone arrives at your doorstep on Tuesday (approximately) you’ll find a sticker with a phone number to call and activate your phone.

Call the number and immediately afterwards, call AT&T and play the bashing-the-0-key-to-get-a-CSR game.

Once you get someone on the line, let them know you have a phone you’d like to combine with your family plan.

Make sure you make the following VERY clear:

    - The Blackberry’s voice plan should reflect the $9.99 for a new line.
    - The activation fee is $28, and NOT $36. Stress this, trust me.
    - Your first bill should reflect the family plan rates and NOT the individual plan rates you initially agreed to in order to get the phone.

Don’t take no for an answer. There’s no reason your first bill should be any higher than $70 bucks or so, depending on your data plan you choose and any features you tack-on like turn-by-turn Nav.

    Anyway, good luck!

    ^^^Interesting point Bill – will consider^^^

@Sean: Problem with the Family plans is that if you are combining a new Bold with an existing out-of-contract account, you’ll be liable for 2 ETFs versus 1 for the Bold alone. Rather, adding a line to the account will keep the first out-of-contract phone status in tact.

Yeah I just checked out the plan and it makes you get blackberry personal.

I just signed up with at&t for the first time because of this great deal. Which I presume is why they are offering it “new coustomers”. I just hope it’s worth it. I have used net10 for the past 2 year and for prepaid service it pretty good. I belive net10 uses the AT&T network. Anyway I’ve heard good things about refurb blackberries and trust me I did my research. My girlfriend is a beer rep and her company just bought 15 refurb BB curves and hers is awsome. I just hope mine comes with a charger.

I was turned down several times online and over the phone. 1st due to being a Premier member, so I cancelled that, (I knew I could get it reinstated after I got the phone). Then they turned me down again, saying $0 Refurb Bold was only for New customers.
So I went back to the store and asked them confirm that I was eligible for the Bold upgrade, they said yes. So I asked them to put a note on my acct saying that I was eligible. Which I had to point out to the customer service rep. She had to check with her manager, who then approved it. Paid $9.95 for shipping. Got my Bold 2 days later! Looks like new, with charger, stereo head set, USB cord, and belt clip. I’m happy.

I wanted to get the Black Berry phone last week for $0.00 unfortunately my brother was out of town (I’m on a family plan and my 2yr agreement was over), so got it today as an upgrade (technically) for $9.99. Total cost for California resident’s $101.94 ($36 Activation, $51, CA Sales Tax, $4.95 Insurance, and $9.99 for phone).

Note: If you are trying to upgrade online and your 2 yr contract is over. Here is what you need to do. Call the ATT sales department number, then tell them you would like to upgrade since your 2 yr contract is over. They might say that you will have to pay the $199.99 Upgrade fee, you then tell them that you will simply cancell your current account so you can get the deal, at which point he/she see’s that you have a point and he/she will try and close the deal.

**You will have to get a new phone number, so if you’re cool with that then Yay!!

It helps to keep it cool. Oh and yes you can get insurance on it since the regular warranty only covers you for 30days. Once you have your phone delivered you will have to cancel your old line and add your new one to your family plan. If your a single user then you will simply have to cancel your old line.

    Hope it helps

    Taken from the att website:

You can enroll in Wireless Phone Insurance when you activate or upgrade your AT&T device. You must enroll within 30 days of activation or upgrade.

Protecting your investment with the optional Wireless Phone Insurance program is a wise choice because purchasing a replacement can certainly be costly and inconvenient. Your enrollment in the program means that if your phone is lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged beyond repair, or requires an out-of-warranty repair, you’re covered. A simple toll-free call is all it takes to get your claim process started. Once approved, a replacement is generally received within 24 to 48 hours, taking the hassle out of replacing your phone and saving you time.

    KEY PROGRAM TERMS
    $4.99 monthly premium
Incidents Covered: lost, stolen or has accidental damage, liquid damage, or mechanical or electrical failure after the manufacturer’s warranty period has expired
Deductible: Effective Nov. 3, 2008, per the terms of your new Insurance Coverage Certificate, each replacement phone is subject to a $50 or $125 non-refundable deductible per approved claim depending on the phone model
Limits: 2 claims within any consecutive 12 months, with a maximum replacement value of $1500/claim
Claims may be fulfilled with new or refurbished replacement equipment and may be a different brand, model or color than the covered equipment. Compatibility with current accessories and features is not guaranteed
You may cancel coverage at any time for a pro-rated refund of the monthly premium
NOTE: Please keep a copy of your original purchase receipt and/or proof of purchase for your insured equipment which may be required in order to fulfill your claim.
