Did the union call a strike for AT&T wire-line workers?

Exclusive

We’re still waiting for an official comment from the Communications Workers of America union but we’ve received a few tips this morning from people claiming to have seen AT&T workers organizing with picket signs. The CWA recently worked with AT&T to resolve contract disputes for AT&T Mobility workers, a story that was widely covered here. AT&T isn’t out of the woods with the union just yet however, as its contracts with wire-line workers in many regions are due to expire on April 4th. Negotiations began on February 24th and have thus far not resolved disputes primarily surrounding health care and other benefits. AT&T’s wire-line business is currently sliding and as such, workers are also seeking the ability to move into new jobs within AT&T as they are created.

This past Monday, workers voted to give the union authorization to call a strike so it is possible a strike is on. With contracts not set to expire for over a week however, the timing would certainly be a bit odd. A strike would affect approximately 90,000 workers according to the CWA.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

UPDATE: We’ve received word from the CWA — contract negotiations are indeed ongoing and a strike has not been called. There is some informational picketing and leafleting going on in various areas merely to show support for the ongoing negotiations.

Wonder over the years how many times this scenario played out as a resultof this
They didn’t care that people couldn’t call 911 for emergencies. They didn’t care that people could have died. All they care about is their so-called fair contract.

Hey I read somewhere you alleged worthless cable cutting extortionist CWA members also contribute large sums of money to the United Way also, dosnt that come out of your paycheck on a voluntary basis?

  • Cyn

I still don’t see where it has proven to be a CWA member or members who were found to be responsible. I don’t condone the sabotage, nor do I think that it was the right way to make a point, if that is what someone was trying to do. I still think it was someone trying to make it look like it was CWA just to draw attention to the situation.

And P.S. guy, I have lots of friends in management and hold an inordinate amount of respect for what they have to do…especially on the lower levels. I have no respect for the greedy people pulling the strings and screwing said managers out of fair compensation. I believe we all make our choices in life. I choose to work union, and they chose to go the management path. I don’t believe in the “us vs. them” mentality because it is counter productive. We should all work together to achieve the best quality of service we know how to provide. That is what it is all about. I truly feel like upper management is so far away from the reality of the work, that they create arbitrary goals that are often unreachable. The standards need to be fair and the company needs to team with the craft to do right by the customer…period!

Might READ previous post all examples of actions from those you have no respect for.Hopefully those such as “Spin Doctor” might take into account the mass deprivation those you have no respect for are responsible for concerning the ability to make emergency calls,or calls period. As for management of the insurance paying variety,In the Southwestern Bell area maybe yours, Ameritech as well I posed the question to “M” as to the year the benefits were restructured for theese unfortunate individuals.I have come across information that suggest late 2005(SWBT) this occured,if this is correct this is the height of the post 9-11 economy.I have found no fiscal justification for this provided by the company/those you have no respect for. This concerns me a great deal as I see this as a step to lower the quality of the workforce overall.Afterall can you fill vacant positions with quality personel making attractive offers such as lower pay than those you manage, paying insurance when those you manage pay nothing,a new profitable trend within the business;no raises or bonuses to speak of.

Us vs Them, dont know about that maybe an attempt at “educational” for those such as “Spin Doctor”.Hopefully the customer will have a group of people calling the shots with their best interest in mind, there has been a substantial lack of with the current administration.

  • Cyn

The customer advocates…well that was what we used to call regulation around here. I guess that has all gone the way of Pacific Bell. I see things coming full circle again in the future. AT&T will eventually get too big for their britches and someone will fight back…for the sake of the customer. I hate to see it happen, but maybe that is just what this industry needs.

  • The Great W8

Isnt that close to where this strike training is taking place,is there really this much pressure to save time on the job?

  • The Great W8

Time is money! were those guys passing jacks or something like that from car to car.Like an airplane refueling mid-air CWA might have concerns about being replaced while on strike that is nothing but dedication.

  • Cyn

haha Now that is the type of defensive driving training I could get into! Where do I sign up!?

  • buds

you don’t need to go to college to be a 1st or 2nd line..

  • George

The Union fights for nothen more than its own damn dues and much less!

They had their time, it has long past. They are nothing more than a LEGAL MAFFIA!

My husband has a college degree, he has worked in the computer industry for 30 plus years. He started working at this company 8 years ago.
He was hired on as a manager, works at least 50 – 60 hours a week and is salary. He is not a manager but that is his title so he can’t be in the union. He has had a raise increase once in those 8 years because of a freeze for management. We don’t get the insurance that the union guys get, or the retirment packages. But after being laid off from a company that he worked for 18 years he is just greatful he has a job because a lot of the guys he was laid off with still haven’t found one. And he makes a lot less then he did at his old job. You want me to feel sorry for the guys that don’t have to pay for their college degree and years of working who make more then he does? They get great insurance and retirment plans and know they will get a yearly raise. They don’t work any harder then he does, or the manager at a fast food place. No wonder companies are sending work out of our country we have become so greedy. Wait till your not working and men like my husband have to cross the picket line because that’s what he has to do to keep his job to continue to put clothes and food in his four childrens mouth. When you don’t have the pay coming in and bill collectors are calling you all of a sudden a job making less looks real good. It’s not like you don’t make good money. Their is a reason people want to work for AT&T. My dad was a union president for most of my life, he believed in the union died for the union. But that was when the Union was to make sure people were treated fairly, jobs weren’t lost because of unfair reasons, the work place was safe. Not to fight because we want more and more and more. How sad.

  • Cyn

I have several issues with your post. #1…and I say this with the utmost respect, but if you have 4 kids then you chose that…don’t use them to make me feel sorry for you. If you can’t afford to put clothes on their backs or food on the table, then YOU are the one to blame, not union workers. Great attempt at a red herring there sweetie. #2…who are these people you speak of who get their college education for free?!?! I have my degree and while I got a drop in the bucket from the company to help with it, I still have a $30,000 student loan to pay off. I’m sure your kids will have to get some sort of financial aid to pay for theirs, since it sounds like you can barely afford to keep them fed. You are an idiot! #3…your husband CHOSE to take a management position. Just because he doesn’t have a crew, doesn’t mean he is not a manager. The title comes with some perks…yet you choose not to mention any of those…lets just see…hmmmmm managers get quarterly bonuses (yes they do…don’t try to deny it, I just got an email that was intended for management only…sent out to craft by mistake…about how they are getting a massive bonus for the first quarter of 2009, hmmmm…thought the business was hurting…gimme a break! Your husband hasn’t gotten a raise? That has nothing to do with the freeze on managment…it has something to do with his performance, because that is what their raises are based on pure and simple. (I know a little bit about the management side of things, more than I’m sure most…so good try there!) #4…sitting back and taking a beating on 70 years worth of progress just because we should be “grateful to have a job” is complete and utter BS. What we are asking for is not greed driven, but fair and just compensation for a workload that has more than doubled, even tripled in many cases. The company has downsized by leaps and bounds piling work onto people that they have never done before…in my case I had 6 co-workers lose jobs and did 1 of those positions get back filled? NO! Who do you think does the work of those 6 people…me. Thank you, but I believe I deserve the compensation I receive. THAT is not the point, the major points of contingency in this negotiation process have to do with the fact that this company is not hurting. Keeping our medical, dental, and vision benefit status quo should not be a problem. The union isn’t asking for more coverage in those areas. The company wants to take it away. The pay increase is a modest amount over the life of the contract. Keeping in line with COLA…so tell me why that should not be acceptable? Your argument is laced with a sour grapes attitude because of YOUR situation. The situation YOU chose to be in. Nobody told you to have 4 kids you can’t support, nobody forced your husband to take a managment job. Many of us chose to stay on the craft side of things because it is better here. Apparently your husband didn’t make the right choice for you. If he had you wouldn’t be making such ridiculous arguments. Try to strip the emotion out of your thinking before you make a public statement and see this from a business perspective. People should share in the progress of the company that they support…not be sacrificed to perpetuate the greed at the top. WE make this company profitible, therefore WE should reap the benefits!

  • TSY

what about the companies that r not unions GREED is what killed them the ENRON who just shut down from all the greed they had people lost all of their pension plans.People with they life built into specific companies higher up MANAGEMENT they’re still living good while the hard workers are gonna have to work longer to live comfortable.THATS NOT RIGHT. And people think unions are not needed when qwest went belly up the unions workers who had pension plans didn’t lose they’re pension thats what unions still fight for saving what u earn and what u worked so hard for for 30 or 40 yrs for. It’s time to chng the face of these greedy bastards.

  • James

Newsflash lady: you’d be surprised how many of us techs have degrees. We realize that the truly hardworking people in this job, not the deadwood managers, deserve the better pay. Remember, craft is what makes this little machine work. At the end of the day, we’re not pushing a no.2 pencil, we’re placing cable baby.

  • James

Well the people at large need to do their due diligence and investigate matters a little more before coming to rash conclusions based on their own economic situation. AT&T is a healthy company making huge profits. It’s not Gm or Chrysler! You do not lower salaries and take away benefits from your workers with the excuse that, “it’s a bad economy.”, when the company is making a killing. It’s unfortunate that many companies are not doing well during these times, but make absolutely no mistake, AT&T isn’t one of them. We here at AT&T are part of this team, not gl or Chrysler. Company is healthy and turning profits, that has to trickle down to the workers.

  • George

I cant wait for you to strike like the damn fools you are so I can cross your stupid lines and make your strike even more worthless. Stop your bitching and be happy you have a job, If you do strike, ,I hope you enjoy unemployment with the other 12% of America.

    DUH!

  • Jane

From the Picket line, to the un-employment line. Enjoy!

The union will still have work but you will be the one un-employed if you strike. Hope you love those guys so much that you’d rather they had a job then you.

    Stupid idiots!
