Compal to delay smartphone orders to Palm, Pre not included

Rumor

According to a recent Digitimes article, the China-based Commercial Times is reporting Compal may be forced to delay upcoming shipments of smartphones to Palm. The source states:

Shipments of Palm’s two smartphones will be delayed as Compal is waiting for Qualcomm’s new chipset solutions that will enable better performance, said the paper.

Such a vague statement is bound to get the rumor mill churning at light speed as people interpret one of the smartphones to mean “Palm Pre”. Good news for Pre fans as this rumor can be debunked before it even gets off the ground. While it is true that Palm has been rumored to have placed a large order for several models of smartphones from Compal, these handsets are supposedly Windows Mobile smartphones — not the WebOS-powered Palm Pre. In fact, the Pre, according to an earlier Digitimes article, is expected to be assembled by Chi Mei, a small Taiwan-based manufacturer known for assembling Motorola handsets. Further debunking the “Pre delay” rumor, the Pre is expected to contain a Ti OMAP processor and not a Qualcomm processor which is the source of the rumored delay. So, Pre fans, dry those eyes and consider the Palm Pre to still be on track for a 1H 2009 release.

Good to hear that this rumor is BS!!!!!!

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

If the Pre doesn’t ship this year, then Palm should just close up shop now.

By the time Pre releases, HTC will already have another device out that will put the Pre to shame!

@gquaglia: I don’t know if its a ‘should’ thing. The rumor is that Palm is only staying alive now on loans that are banking on the Pre. Without the pre on time (which I imagine is part of the reason they’re being vague about a release date) they’re dead.

HTC devices really don’t put anyone to shame. see G1 for prime example.

plenty of WM examples as well.
that being said Chi Mei hopefully isn’t responsible for some of the crappy motos that have come out over the years, build quality has slipped.

I’m surprised that Palm is able to float until the release of the Pre. I can’t imagine the Treo Pro is exactly flying off store shelves, and I don’t recall the last time I’ve seen a Palm device in the wild.

And when is someone going to fix the photoshopped image, so the time and coverage indicator aren’t on the plastic bezel above the display?

    > I’m surprised that Palm is able to float until
    > the release of the Pre…

    They weren’t able to.

They needed another $200 million directly and indirectly through Elevation Partners to get to the launch.

HTC DOES put other devices to shame. They’re the hot hot stuff.

BUUUTTT – Yay for the above being faulted! I’m really pulling for Palm to launch this seeingly amazing device to compete with everything else that’s out there. ^_^

Yes the HTC devices are hot, the only problem is they run Win Mobile [G1 excluded] WMO is garbage and I would never buy a device running it, no matter how “hot” is was.

that is part of the display

Palm does not need any rumors to doom themsleves. They did that after they sat and let the treo 600 get loooooong in the tooth while everyone else lapped them 3x over.

Such a shame Elevation Partners put so much $$$ into a nag of a horse. They should have backed a real winner like Moto (just kidding)…

Shame though all that will be left to choose from will be bb and ifart. What a choice.

Chi Mei is one garbage manufacturer. I would be surprised if anything made by them lasted three months.

  • JakeyBoy

Since Palm is nearly bankrupt, they can’t afford to get sued by Apple over their multitouch patent…thats why…

I say Apple is farting in the wind
