Sony Ericsson slammed in Q1; future outlook bleak

News

In the current economic crisis it’s pretty easy to turn to the default financial climate, decreasing retailer inventories and “weak consumer demand” when things aren’t going great. Well, it’s certainly easier than talking about your lackluster product line, aging designs and your penchant for rehashing old models in favor of variation and innovation. But we digress. Sony Ericsson revealed today that Q1 will most definitely not be the quarter it turns things around and slows its current sales tumble. In fact, it’s looking at a loss in the neighborhood of €340-€390 million ($459 million-$526 million). Still number four in terms of global market share for the time being, the company expects to sell only 14 million handsets between January and March of this year — down from 24.2 million in Q4 2008. That’s no typo; the company expects to sell 10 million fewer handsets in Q1 2009 than it did in the previous quarter. While that figure is horrifying, it certainly goes a great length in explaining why Ericsson might want out of the JV.

“only 14 million handsets between January and March of this year — down from 24.2 million in Q4 2008. That’s no typo; the company expects to sell 20 million fewer handsets”

    24.2 – 14 = 10

    is that a typo? irony!

I don’t see how SE can remotely anticipate any kind of turnaround especially with the borderline crap product line they’ve released for the past 3-4yrs

it’s almost like they’re choosing to ignore market trends…..

    Awesome picture.

24.2 million – 14 million = 10.2 million. How is that “20 million fewer handsets”?

I don’t know… I still like SE more than Nokia phones (mostly because of the app lock and the instability of their symbian os when running multiple apps). Still, it would be a heartbreaker to see either one go.

  • ouch

If that’s how few Sony is selling I hate to see the Motorola numbers!

@ouch SE is big in Europe. It’s a bigger indicator for Nokia.

SE has made some very cool and very high quality handsets. But they are pricing them way too high given the lack of updated models

I work for AT&T and SE’s line up for us is the biggest p.o.s. They had a recall on their 580 and we should be giving people money to buy the 350. The 760a is the only phone that is somewhat respectful but nowhere even close to any other phone to what we sell.

The x1 was a year late and they continue to push their own standards down peoples throats… This may come as a surprise to them, but when given choices people dont pick a crappier product.

I dont know how old of a symbian product the user above was using when he claimed Nokia devices are unstable, but its most likely not a phone released in the past 1.5 years and never bothered to check the software update service.

Good luck to SE either way, we always need more competition.
