AT&T juicing up service in Austin, TX as SXSW hoses networks

Services

As anyone following at attendee or two of South by Southwest 2009 on Twitter can attest to, AT&T’s network down in Austin Texas is completely hosed. The tweets speak for themselves; Dropped call number 833, AT&T’s data network is down again, ^*%)*&%^)% AT&T!, and so on. Apparently the complaints aren’t isolated to Twitter as AT&T has responded publicly to the situation and stated that it intends to address its troubled network by upping capacity immediately. In fact, it expects the improvements to be felt already today:

To accommodate unprecedented demand for mobile data and voice applications at SXSW, we are actively working this afternoon to add capacity to our cell sites serving downtown Austin.  These efforts are ongoing, but we anticipate that customers should see improved network performance this evening and for the remainder of the event.  We will continue to monitor network performance throughout the event, and will do everything possible to maximize network performance throughout.  We apologize to customers who were inconvenienced  during this surge in local network demand.

Wow. If it’s that easy, AT&T, how about doing something about the disaster your 3G/3.5G network in the New York Metro area has become?

    @ Jackal,
    from what i seen and i think its actually true, vzw or maybe sprint can give you better coverage on data and voice, but here in Louisiana, Tmo, Verizon, Sprint, and altel is best here instead of ATT. i went to ATT b/c my g/f have it and i know alot of my friends have it and so i just switch so i can talk to them easy ya know. Sucks though, but like others say, it depends on where you live. More bars for what again?

    @BlackuLa,

    I guess it’s just too much to ask for a good phone on a good network for a good price. It’s obvious that there are good phones and there are good networks(geographically specific) and there are good prices…I would imagine a company could make lots of money by doing all three. Guess I will have to start up my own wireless company. Whadaya think? Jackal Wireless has a nice ring to it!?!

    And while you’re at it ATT, how about fixing reception in the Boston area too!

    It’s sucking so bad right now that since last June, more of my calls are dropped than stay connected. What happened? Why would service gradually degrade so much so suddenly?

    @ Jackal:

    I lived in Shreveport, LA and Alltel and Verizon are the best there. AT&T use to be, but it went to crap. Im happy about the Alltel merge and so are my friends back there. We can all talk for free now.
