T-Mobile G2 to be launched at CTIA?

Exclusive

This isn’t based on any tips or ninja-related information, just more like logical thinking, we guess. But, is there anyone out there that thinks T-Mobile USA wont be announcing the T-Mobile G2 at CTIA? We nailed the April release date back when we scooped the G2 — we even got the other mystery carrier right — and even though a lot of people doubted it would come so soon (it’s only the same phone without a keyboard, but whatever), we were pretty sure it was spot on. Additionally, we’ve just been made aware of the fact that the Cupcake update looks to be coming around April as well. Good timing, huh? Get all those old G1s upgraded Audemars Piguet style.

If we’re wrong, we’ll buy the T-Mobile team dinner. What do you guys think?

I know that AT&T Wireless had the most Fortune 500 companies back in 2003-2004 and then Cingular aquired them during the merger. (Buy Out) So now that AT&T Mobility is a combonation of Cingular, SBC & Bell South, I’m sure they do have more companies than the other three…but they bought them, they didn’t earn them.

Well said. It’s funny how folks are so passionate about propping up AT&T and Verizon and saying carriers like T-Mobile “should just give up.” I’ve been with T-mobile for six years because 1) they have great coverage which, according to Consumer Reports, is better than AT&T and as good as or very near Verizon’s coverage in all major markets; 2) they have awesome customer service and 3) they don’t charge as much as the other guys. They have been lacking in the handset department for the last couple of years, but that seems to be changing with the advent of Android (and I’m not referring only to the G1…I mean the HTC Magic/G2 and Huawei’s sleek new Android phone coming soon.) I think the haters put down T-Mo because secretly they know they’re paying too much and it burns them up.

well said mate go tmobile…. its a great service btw everyboody just unlocks those att for tmobile anyway

@Brian, I was not propping up AT&T, I was merely suggesting that the earlier (unsupported)assertion that TMO services the majority of fortune 500 companies may not be true. Also, if you actually read my posts, you will clearly see that I am not a TMO “hater” but rather just see weaknesses in their handset offerings (current) and low visibility for future handsets. Believe me, this sentiment is not mine alone. I agree with your points #2 and #3. As to #1, that is questionable. TMO has a good network generally, but coverage is definitely spotty in urban areas, and out in the sticks you can generally forget about it (e.g., Catskills park). As I stated in one of my posts, I am in the center of manhattan (NYC) on the 4th floor next to ginormous window and I don’t even get a dot of service, hence during work hours I use my employer-provided VZ handset (3-4 bars).

I retired from “one” of the other carriers and have always used T-Mobile, even way through two previous names. Why? Because even with my company discount the rates at TMo were always better and when you have to contact customer service, you almost always hang up feeling like you spoke to someone who cared and listened to you.

  • Kyle

Well said Jacob im happy to be talking to people who know that you can get superior service for a good price

  • Tonez

Nuff said.. Travis Jacobs said it all there.T Mobile does care for their customers. People request all these functions on a phone but yet there never use them that much but to make calls and text. Trust me I troubleshoot these phones on a daily basis, and ask customer what they use there phones for.So for all the cry babies out there . Be lucky to have a cell phone and not an old skool house phones or pagers …

I must confess, however, that I almost “covet” a new smartphone. I WANT the internet IN MY HAND, when I walk, when I sit, anytime I want to know something. I want the whole world of information, maps, directions, communication with friends and family, that the internet can offer at my disposal. Actually, I’ve even rationalized that it would be better for me to have a handheld phone so that I can be more “mobile” and get exercise and access it ANYwhere. Maybe one day I’ll say “enough” and put it down to concentrate on what’s around me, but for now, it will be my grown-up toy. And, as you know, the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys. ha ha Needless to say, I’m shopping and waiting for the right phone as long as I can. I think it will be soon, if I don’t buy a used G1 to bide my time.

how bout if your wrong you do a G2 giveaway!!!!!! kinda like the blackberry one…. yea the last drawing that i didnt win :(

I had verizon for years and i will admit coverage was spectacular. You could be in the middle of a cave and still make a phone call. (a little exaggerate but you get the point) Now I use t-mobile and I’d rather take a hit in coverage than a hit in my wallet. As for carriers that are used with “major” companies…it’s because they are offered “deals” or “discounts” and are obviously more geared to the “business” consumer. Oh and if its any company that should give up it might as well be sprint. I haven’t seen this years consumer reports but last year they were ranked 5th of 5…numbers 1 & 2 being verizon and t-mobile.

You people are insane. Tmobile is awesome. I’d kill to change services!

Verizon has horrible phones! We’ve got like no smartphones a few year old Black Berry, crippled Win Mo devices (where’d the wifi go? Where’d all the ram/processor speed go?) and a high price.

AT&T on the other hand has fantastic phones. But cruddy customer service and over priced plans (well, they’re about the same compare to Verizon I suppose but expensive compared to Tmo….)

  • lanenamami

wow shut the fu@k up about tmo seriously dont u have anything betta to do then waste ur time back and forth bout this and that “dig dug” ur just annoying ! get ova it. i have tmo and i love it u dont like it then find a different forum! this is bout g2 not anything else . pce

I have stuck with T-Mo for the past 6 years because of their excellent custo service and pricing.

I have used all their BB phones (7100t, 8120 Pearl, Curve).

I am fine with their technology. In fact, I just got the G1 because here in San Francisco we get 3G service.

The G1 is an awesome phone and now I get all kinds of cool apps and can browse the Net at 3G speeds.

And just the other day I downloaded a program that lets me tether the G1 to my notebook computers, at DSL speeds.

Frankly, you can all talk about specs and whatnot, but with a G1 and T-Mo account IMHO it does not get any better than that.

Oh, by the way, two months ago T-Mo informed me that as a loyal customer they were giving me on my two lines, UNLIMITED talk time, nationwide calling, for $90 total on both lines.

And our unlimited 3G data service on the G1s, for both phones, is $50 a month.

So that’s $140 for two G1 phones, unlimited calls and 3G data use. I challenge anyone to find a better price.

I doubt I will ever leave T-Mobile. And I will stick with the Adroid-based phones they offer (with a physical keyboard, of course).

Hmmm… Looks like you were wrong.

Since my last post I did go out and get myself a G1. A lady posted it on Craigslist. I met her at a restaurant within 2 hours and bought it. And I am really enjoying it. Now in my hand I have a phone, a camera, GPS mapping, a music player (mine or online), and numerous games or other applications are available for download, free, at my whim. A new version of the software for the phone is coming very soon which will provide even more applications and improvements, including video and a virtual screen keyboard. What a deal! I bought a larger battery on Ebay, which makes it a bit fatter with a new back cover that came with it but I can browse or talk all day and never have a dead battery. Since I am not in a contract, I am ready to pounce on the next version of the Android phone. When my wife drives I can use the phone as a juke box, playing selected artists off Imeem. I have one of those FM transmitters I plug into the phone and we hear everything thru the car speakers, even a phone call, and YouTube videos. They say the phone isn’t “sexy” like the iPhone. But it sure performs and it sure is fun.

  • MichaelSF

My point exactly. The G1 is FUN, as well as practical.

Hey, what did you get the G1 for? Seems an important detail to leave out.

My guess is $200 (at most $250.)

  • Travis

My G1 was only $175 and almost new. The lady just said she wanted another phone. I do hope, however, that the new 1.5 update will give us a flash player and some kind of video player. I do like to see the radar animated which I could do on my simple Nokia flip before.
