Sony releases OLED Walkman specs

General

Sony unveiled its upcoming line of iPod Touch competitors earlier this year and much to the surprise of, well everyone, the X1000 series looks impressive. Very impressive in fact. If you can work your way past the marble finish, the X1000 Walkman has a lot going for it and now that the Sony Style Hong Kong site has pushed out the full detailed specs, we’re kind of excited to get our hands on a few of them. Here are the highlights:

  • 3-inch (432 x 240 pixels) OLED touchscreen display
  • 32GB storage
  • NetFront web browser, YouTube support
  • MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV audio / AVC, H.264, MPEG4, WMV video
  • Integrated noise cancellation
  • FM tuner
  • 802.11g/b WiFi
  • 33 hours of music playback, 9 hours of video playback

The one thing it doesn’t have of course, is the App Store. The hype and development community surrounding the iPod Touch will always give it a leg up on competitive offerings. If you’re looking to save some cash (hopefully) and forego the added functionality afforded by apps in exchange for some insane battery life however, the new Walkman might be just what the doctor ordered.

Not having the app store kills it for me but I’m totally not counting it out though , the oled screen compensates for that in my opinion . I wonder if there’s any chance of customizing the ui or something .

Lately, I haven’t seen any interesting Apps lately on the App Store…so I don’t think that necessarily kills it for me. I’m just glad they started offering Drm free music downloads

Sony has got to GIVE UP on phones, portable music players, and videogames (maybe…let’s see how PS4 goes) and just stick to sound systems and TVs.

i like the noise canceling feature… Looks slick

Sounds like a great device, but I wonder how the sound processor and browser are going to stack up to the touch

Sounds pretty nice. I’d definitely consider it if it had Rhapsody subscription service. I wonder why more companies haven’t jumped on that boat? Anyhow- touch screens rock the fat one.

I think apps will only go so far. Soon they’re just become repetitive.

I have a pair of sony noise-cancelling earbuds (which work great) but wondered by they could’t just use the battery power from the device. This seems to answer that question and I hope to see this feature implemented on all mobile handhelds.

I really don’t like the speckle pattern on the body of this player, but the specs are pretty nice.

I have an iPod touch (first generation 8GB) and have for awhile, and have come to the conclusion that I don’t really care about the App Store at all- but on the other hand, a web browser is something quite important, how is NetFront these days? If it’s halfway decent I might have to consider this, the iPod touch is nice enough but I’m in the mood for something different… the marble finish is not that great looking, but maybe it’ll mean I won’t care about getting it scratched, so I won’t have to invest in a case…

I’ve had a few Sony MP3 players over the years and the sound quality in every case beats the iPod. The iPod has moderate to mediocre sound quality IMO.

And yes I have had Ipods too (classic, nano and shuffle).

Loving the marble finish! Great!! True competition. But work on the App store

  • MadMike

That’s a marble finish? Looks more like unfinished graphite sheathing or black tyveck.

what’s the weight of this thing?

Looks great…might be my next mp3 player…had a couple of sony mp3 players, including the bean and their battery lifes lasted forever, along with excellent sound. Hopefully they can keep renovating with this device and not keep it stagnant.

PS @ Madmike…what the hell is black tyveck?! lol

Give up on games? Are you nuts? The PS3 kicks butt. Not only do I have great games and blue ray. I also can play downloaded content. For the price its perfect. Lets see WIFI, wireless controllers(without buying a charge kit)blue tooth and the fact I can hook up my 500GB portable hard drive and have a great media center. What more could you ask for? Oh wait thats right I’m missing the great red ring of death. Oh yea that the other system. To bad you have to pay an extra $120 to get all the features that come with the PS3. After that you still don’t have blue ray. Yea Sony really put out a stinker.

They couldn’t fit some phone parts in there?

Wow, very nice looking, I’ve been looking to upgrade, I’m still using an 8gb Zen Microphoto from like 2003-2004 :(

Because it has the browser I’m interested. But it can’t be a bitch to type on. Because the Touch and iphone can be sometimes.

ooooooooo! A fleck stone finish. I had a pair of 10 inch subs that I painted with this stuff in 89′. Playing a little ‘Brass Monkey’. The good ol’ days.

I have a feeling this one will cost an arm, leg, and part of a torso.
