Palm Pro now available from Bell Canada

Retail

We’re not too sure the same CDMA users who were holding out for the Treo Pro are still interested now that the Palm Pre cat has been let out of the bag, but Canada’s Bell Mobility has just released the Treo Pro for $99.95 CDN ($78.99 USD) on a three-year contract. Bell has had quite the week; first the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 popped up for a mere $29.95 and now the Treo Pro makes an affordable entrance as well. Like we said though, it’s not easy to get excited about the Pro with the Pre looming in the backs of our minds — it’s kind of like looking at a car when the sexy redesign for the new model year has already been announced but isn’t yet on the road. The Treo Pro is a decenct piece of kit though, with a 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, Microsoft Office Mobile, PIE 6 and Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. It’s just, well, not the Pre.

I think this looks pretty nice actually. But as you said, its definitely no Pre.

Why is Palm killing this baby in its cradle … is the question I’d like to see Palm directly answer. Possibly the price to be paid for, once again, becoming a 1-trick pony company …

I love the typo in the screenshot. $99.95 with a 3-year contract, or $49.95 without a contract.

Boy, that’s gonna require a little thinking, is the contract worth spending that extra $50? ;)

Ah… Bell and their stupid 3-Year contracts. I will have to wait until Sprint or AT&T. Rock on Palm!

The Treo Pro is an excellent phone. It’s under the radar in the US because, to this point, it’s only been sold as an unlocked GSM model and AT&T hasn’t picked it up. Hopefully Sprint has worked out the well-publicized kinks and the upcoming launch goes smoothly. I picked up the GSM version a few weeks ago and I really like this phone. Like others have said, it’s not the Pre, but a lot of us arent’t looking for the Pre.

Been messing around with a cdma Treo Pro and will confidently say if I weren’t an HTC fanboy and *had* to pick up a Treo, the Pro would be it.

“it’s kind of like looking at a car when the sexy redesign for the new model year has already been announced but isn’t yet on the road.”

For power user who like this form factor this is as good as it gets. It will be a couple of years before there are the body of powerful applications you can use on Window MObile today, available for the Pre and its OS. Pro even has a storage limit of 32GB, the Pre is 8GB.

I am more curious about the Pre2 than about the Pre. Pre’s screen is small compared to the space they made available with the slide and that, memory, and a OS that has some user testing will make me wait for Pre2 in early 2009 rather than Pre1 in June or July 09.

Everyone I know with one of these Pros out on GSM is loving it I think it will do well for Sprint.

I would not buy any Palm in the first few months and this one was very well received already.

Palm must have a good presence north of the border, they are mostly GSM so it makes sense

Bell is a CDMA carrier as of right now so that may be a good sign the Pro is ready to have the wraps taken off in the U.S.

    Palm is still in business?

  • backbeat

^Not really. They’re actually in business as ‘Elevation Partners’. Palm, the company which sold its rights to the OS it created, has been a dead-company-walking entity for years. Hope that helps. :)

jw, Palm has this device coming in a few months that is getting some buzz, heard of the Pre

  • Linus

Pre’s buzz died about a week after CES. It is a revolutionary device for Palm, but only because Palm was considered dead. In the broader market it isn’t a game changer.

It is kinda like saying Mickey Rourke got some “buzz”. All right, he did. Doesn’t make him the leading man he once once.

so when is Bell bringing/launching the Pre in the Great White North? Anyone know? Anyone heard? Time to upgrade my Treo… I’d wait if it wasn’t a longgg wait.
